Bachelor - Language Education

American Sign Language. Levels 1-6. Teacher & Interpreter for 35+ years.

I teach and tutor in American Sign Language from the perspective of one who came into ASL and the Deaf community without a thought of being a professional in a related field. Still, I did become a professional interpreter, teacher, tutor, mentor and have been a service-provider, advocate and friend since 1984. I want my students to learn that fear and anxiety in undertaking a new adventure are usually of our own making, and that learning about other cultures and languages by association with native users is so valuable. Therefore, my classes are highly interactive and immersive; students will be required often to learn voice-off, role-play sign language / deaf experience situations, complete tasks between classes, and engage fully. Focus will be on conversational quality, grammatical structures, situational encounters, expressive and receptive language skills. I will provide curriculum and, as needed, written information and videos used. I offer: 1) Private lessons - Beginner to Advanced, 6 levels, 18 classes per semester equivalent, 60-120 min. / class, typically 1 class per week. Accredited Course available. 2) Tutoring - Beginner to Test Prep and Proficiency Interview improvement 3) Homeschoolers - 1 - 8 students working together; from the same area or I can match your family or small group with another. Credit Course available. 2) Small-group classes - Beginner to Advanced, same as above; 3) Business / employer classes - Situational ASL for your specific industry / office need; typically 5 week sessions, 45-60 minutes / week; 4) Personal enrichment or Continuing Education Classes, purchase per week or per level. recommended 45-60 minutes Thank you for taking the time to stop by. I do hope that we can work together in your Sign Language proficiency goal!

Ages taught: Male: 13 and up; Female: 13 and up MY BACKGROUND: My journey with ASL began at age 6 – from shy little friend to a Professional interpreter, teacher, tutor, mentor, workshop trainer, evaluator, agency owner, advocate, and friend. I began interpreting in 1984 and thereafter received my degree in Public Service - Interpreting / ASL, and later a Bachelors in Principles and Methods of Language Education; and thus have been involved in Sign Language, Education and with the Deaf Community for nearly 40 years. CLASSES: My classes are tailored to the student(s), their goals and learning style, with the desire to help each student achieve a high level of fluency in the language, the culture and the community of the Deaf. My curriculum is a combination of my own and an accredited program through which students can obtain a full transcript for each level if desired. I offer ASL Class primarily online; however, I am available locally for on-location classes for homeschoolers, small businesses, community organizations, etc., evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Use "Ask a Question" to see if this option will work for you. Some of the classes I offer: • Homeschoolers - semester equivalent; accredited courses • Private classes and Tutoring • Group classes • Business-specific classes - 6 weeks - Choose 45-60 min. NOTE: FAMILY/GROUP PACKAGES AVAILABLE - Use "Ask a Question" link to inquire about these special rates. Especially good for homeschoolers and others needing structure and assessment who will be learning together. If you have a need that doesn't exactly fit the parameters you see here on my Profile page, please message through "Ask a Question." I will respond quickly to try to work out an arrangement for you and/or your family. For students with more extensive exposure to ASL I will evaluate at first class for placement in higher levels. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: I believe that total immersion is the best way to learn a language; so I incorporate experiential situations into each level and encourage students to find opportunities to immerse themselves in the language and culture of the Deaf. The methods I use are proven time and time again to produce positive and even rapid results. ABOUT ME: Other than teaching ASL, I am an artist, landscape designer, border collie lover, and health-foodie. My daughter is bilingual ASL/English from infancy. My husband also signs fluently. Even our border collies understood sign language! This is our life. I would love to help you make it part of yours.
