I teach and tutor in American Sign Language from the perspective of one who came into ASL and the Deaf community without a thought of being a professional in a related field. Still, I did become a professional interpreter, teacher, tutor, mentor and have been a service-provider, advocate and friend with many Deaf since 1984.

I want my students to learn that fear and anxiety in undertaking a new adventure are usually of our own making, and that learning about other cultures and languages by association with native users is so valuable.

Therefore, my classes are highly interactive and immersive; students will be required often to learn voice-off, role-play sign language / deaf experience situations, complete tasks between classes, and engage fully. Focus will be on conversational quality, grammatical structures, situational encounters, expressive and receptive language skills.

I will provide curriculum and, as needed, written information and videos used.

I offer:
1) Private lessons - Beginner to Advanced, 4 levels, 18 classes per level (semester equivalent), 60-90 minutes / class, typically 1 class per week;
2) Small-group classes - Beginner to Advanced, same as above;
3) Business / employer classes - Situational ASL for your specific industry / office need; typically 6 week sessions, 45-60 minutes / week;
4) Personal enrichment or Continuing Education Classes, purchase per week or per level. recommended 45-60 minutes

Thank you for taking the time to stop by. I do hope that we can work together in your Sign Language education endeavor.

About Allison M.

My journey with ASL began at age 6 – from shy little friend to a Professional interpreter, teacher, tutor, mentor, workshop trainer, evaluator, agency owner, advocate, and friend. I began interpreting in 1984 and soon thereafter received my degree in Public Service - Interpreting / ASL; and thus have been involved in Sign Language and with the Deaf Community for more than 35 years.

My classes are tailored to the student(s), their goals and learning style, with the desire to help each student achieve a high level of fluency in the language and the community.

I offer my ASL Class online for now (on-location classes may be provided in the future on a class-by-class basis) currently including:
• Homeschool classes - 15 weeks at 45 or 60 min
• Private classes - 15 weeks at 60 min
• Semi-private classes (2-4) 15 weeks - Choose 60 min
• Business-specific classes - 6 weeks - Choose 45-60 min.
o All classes include full evaluations for each student.
o Regular classes include 6 semester-levels of 15
weeks each.
o Business classes are designed to flex to the specific
needs of the office, industry or group being taught.
16-WEEK PACKAGES AVAILABLE- Use "Ask a Question" link to inquire about these special rates. Especially good for homeschoolers and others needing structure and assessment.

If you have a need that doesn't exactly fit the parameters you see here on my Profile page, such as a family homeschooling together, meeting twice per week, etc., please send me a message through "Ask a Question." I will respond quickly to try to work out an arrangement for you and/or your family.

NOTE: Most students begin with Level 1, Part 1. However, I can evaluate students with more extensive exposure to ASL for placement in higher levels. Again, click on "Ask a Question" to send a message for more information. I'll respond as soon as possible!

I believe that total immersion is the best way to learn a language; so I incorporate experiential situations into each level and encourage students to find opportunities to immerse themselves in the language and culture of the Deaf. The methods I use are proven time and time again to produce positive and even rapid results.

Other than teaching ASL, I am an artist, landscape designer, border collie lover, and foodie. My daughter is bilingual ASL/English from infancy. My husband also signs fluently. Even our border collies understood sign language! This is our life. I would love to help you make it part of yours.

Allison is phenomenal! I was so nervous about signing up for lessons--afraid that I'd be wasting my money. I sent a few emails to a few instructors and their responses left me uncertain of their abilities. When I read Allison's profile, I was immediately impressed with her attention to detail. I was hoping she'd be a perfect match for me, since I am a detail-oriented person as well, and sent her an email. Her response confirmed that she was a perfect match for me! She emailed me with a recommended course to help me as an interpreter (detailed, of course) and I immediately signed up! She is incredibly knowledgeable of ASL interpreting. Not only does she have an extensive background in interpreting, but she is involved in Deaf ministry. I am so thankful that she was able to bless me with so much advice and instruction for my own ministry! I cannot thank her enough! I would highly recommend her for any and all of your interpreting needs!

I had some previous ASL lessons and exposure. However doing the class with Allison did help to polish my language skill and conversation skills. The class that I participated in was a mix of true beginners and some intermediate users. She was still able to make class fun and even challenging for me with the mix of learners.

She is fun and doesn't make learning overly serious. But you will be very equipped to hold a conversation with deaf friends and family.
