Yves L.

Chino Hills, CA

About Yves

I grew up in Quebec City Canada, where I only spoke French during those growing years. From a very young age, I was always attracted to music and particularly playing drums. My mom has told me that before I could even walk, I was already banging away on whatever I could put my hands on. I would sit down with pots, pans, and spoons and bang away. My parents bought my first “real” drum kit when I was about five years old. It was a Mickey Mouse drum set that they ordered from the Sears catalog. I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, because of the poor quality of the drum, this particular kit only lasted
a couple months, but it was on that very drum kit that I gave my first live performance. The concert took place in the basement of my house. This memorable concert included one song, a French version of California dreaming, with me on drums, my brother on guitar and my sister as a singer. The crowd (one uncle and our mom) loved it and saw the potential in what could be a career someday!

My next significant concert was when I was 15 years old. My brother and I put a Beatles tribute band together and did an all Beatles song concert. We were able to convince about 300 of our friends and schoolmates that the $3 dollar ticket would be worth it. During my teenage years, I got really serious about drumming and joined a Drum and Bugle Corp band. I probably learned the most during those 5 years. We had several incredible professional drum teachers that spent countless hours teaching us everything from every single rudiment in the book, drum theory to several techniques on how to play drums. Those years were foundational for me as a drummer.

Fast-forward a couple years and you end up in the glamour rock days: the 80’s. It was a time where it was irrelevant if you knew how to play an instrument well, but the main thing that mattered had to do with the “hairdo” that would sit on top of your head. Still, it was during those years that I started to play regularly. I had a couple different bands and we played around quite a bit as well as spend a lot of time writing our own music. Through it all, even the glamour rock days provided an opportunity for me to grow as a drummer and overall musician. In 1986 we founded our own original rock band. We started writing our own music and found a name that would stick to us like glue once we moved to the US. Our band name was “One Way” and we did eventually to the US in order to pursue our dream.

One Way only lasted a couple years and in 1991, my brother and I started another band. This one lasted for almost 20 years. The Kry was born as we continued writing songs & playing around Albuquerque New Mexico where we had moved in 1988. In 1992, we launched our first album “I’ll find You There” with Asaph Records in Costa Mesa California. My brother and I became Christians while living in Albuquerque and so everything we wrote had to do with our beliefs as Christians.
Throughout the years, The Kry released ten albums with sales of over half a million records. We toured extensively from 1992 through 2002 in over 25 countries as well as numerous times in the US.

In 2010 I stopped playing music on a professional lever for a living in order to travel less and be with my children more. I am still involved with music writing as well as teaching. I did not get a music degree but was trained professionally during my teenage years by different professional drummers with private lessons.

I teach music to school aged children from 5 years old to more advance students of all ages. I track their personal progress, collaborate with parents, and work with students to prepare for school band, contests, and special concerts. I also specialize in advanced development for already established drummers. No matter what, it is always a blast to be able to pour out to other aspiring and younger drummers what I have learn from the many years of playing and touring.

*** Lesson Details ***
Having been a drummer all my life and having been able to earn a living from it for well over 25 years has been one of the biggest blessings for me. I want to be able to impart the joy of playing drums to you. Because of the thousands of shows played during my career, I have acquired a solid knowledge of playing live which helps me impart to young musicians live drumming skills that will be beneficial when playing in front of a crowd. Also, having recorded 10 albums in various studios as well as having been hired to record for other artists, studio drumming will also be taught carefully and with expertise.

The topics that we will be going through together are endless. With younger drummers who are just starting, we will go through basic topics like how to purchase a drum kit. Where and what kind of drum kit to buy. How to set up a drum kit, general glossary, tuning, and maintenance. What size and what brand of drumsticks you should use, how to warm up and practice, as well as stick, bass drum, snare, cymbals and overall techniques. I will teach you all the main rudiments, go through basic and more advanced quarter notes, eighth, sixteenth note drum beats. We will learn some cool grooves, and drum fills. We will make sure that you understand drum dynamics, and independence. I can teach you any songs of your choice or any styles you wish to focus on. Learn to do drum solos and if desired, complete drum theory.

Each lessons and curriculum will be tailor made for every student. I will provide every exercises and practice plan for the student to take home and practice during the week. Every student will be given the chance to understand every aspect of drumming as well as discover the fun and pleasure drumming comes with.

Because every student learns at his or her own pace, there will not be any pressure or unreachable expectation that would make learning drum a drag. (pun intended = drag is a rudiment) but over the period of 6 months, there will be noticeable progress.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***
Usually the student will have his own instrument which we will use for lessons. Otherwise, I can bring my own equipment.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers marked as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25 lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.Since I was heavily trained with using proper techniques (I can play both match or conventional grip on drums) I spend a lot of time focusing on my students developing the proper technique to play with. I was mainly a rock drummer and so my genre is definitely rock drumming but have experience with many styles of music. I also teach percussion, guitar and music theory

Yves truly qualified in experience and teaching ability

Selected Yves as a drum teacher for my son based on his profile. Yves is an experienced, patient and fun instructor that has been effective making drumming fun and interesting to my five year old. Yves is good at making sure parents understand how to help their child in the learning process. Yves is a bit further out from me but I am not disappointed. Thank you Yves.

Yves is THE BEST instructor!

My son is 5-years-old and quite an active little guy! When he said he was interested in learning to play guitar, I wasn't sure we would be able to find a teacher for his age. We did; Yves is the best! Yves is always patient with him and understanding of his age/ ability. He instructs him with kindness and holds his attention. Yves also has a wonderful home studio in a nice home/area. He is flexible with scheduling as well. He goes above and beyond with extra help and recommendations for helpful materials. My son looks forward to seeing him every week and sharing with him 'how much I practiced'. We would highly recommend Yves to anyone.

We were new to the whole online, private lesson world and only tried as a test for our 10 yr-old son. He has now been working with Jason for several months now and shows no signs of stopping. Our son is progressing, has gained confidence and still seems to have fun. Jason is on time and if you cannot make a lesson he is flexible in rescheduling if given some notice. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much Jason packs into his lessons without overwhelming the student. We highly recommend him!

Valentina W. H.

Chino Hills, CA

About Valentina W.

I am delighted as a music teacher and performer, with excitement and joy when my students really enjoy music. A musician is just like a 'Messenger of Love, Beauty, and Truth', bringing to people what is lovely, truthful and pure.

Learning a musical instrument can open our eyes to see beauty of life, to embrace our sense of being and further, to prove that quality and purpose of life results from more than just physical satisfaction.

For years we find that most studios, limited to resources and the pressure of exams - a competition-oriented approach, provide merely technical training on s
kills, but not a holistic encountering of music. We will try to bring about a different approach:

Without diminishing the skill training, we will enhance the music appreciation training by guiding students to listen to legendary historical recordings on a regular base. Furthermore we'll also encourage our students to reach out together to the communities with our concerts and services, based on the passion to deliver high quality performance. The sole purpose of this approach is to awaken and cultivate our love for music as well as to rectify the purpose of learning classical music.

We hope our students can eventually experience that the purpose of music making , or in a broader view, performing arts, is to enrich our world, physically, emotionally and spiritually. This is the reason we are the messenger of love - the Almighty God.

I have been trying to come up with the perfect words to describe this teacher but I can't find anything I feel is good enough, other than the words wonderful and amazing. The way she teaches, and just her presence alone just blows me away, and I couldn't be more thankful to have met her and have the opportunity of her teaching me. If anyone is meant to be a teacher,it would be this person. She is so gifted.. Believe me when I say, if you have any doubt about choosing the right teacher, look no further because you just found her.

Amy has truly changed my life both as a performer and person. She helped me polish my vocal technique and singing methods, in addition to acting and audition coaching. She was very instrumental in helping me pick amazing audition songs and how to really give a memorable performance, even if it's just 16 bars at an open call! Before studying with Amy, I was a bit unfocused and rusty, now I am poised and confident in my singing abilities. Thank you Amy, you are an incredible and inspiring teacher!

Thaddeus G.

San Dimas, CA

About Thaddeus

I've dedicated a lifetime to learning, studying and performing on Latin Percussion and Drum set. I began study at age 13 and was playing professionally by the age of 18.
The truth is, I didn't wake up one day and choose drums and Latin Percussion - It chose me! And thankfully, music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I've been fortunate to have experience in performing all kinds of music as well as formal study with master drummers from Cuba, veteran Jazz Drummers, Soul drummers, a school education in music and drums, and also have the intuitive music knowledge that
only comes from a lifetime of dedication to the art form.

Because of my playing experience - I can teach you all kinds of music styles! Salsa, Latin & Brazilian, Jazz, Church Worship, Rock, Soul, R&B and authentic Afro-Cuban Folkloric drumming and songs.

Most importantly, I can TEACH WHATEVER YOU WANT TO LEARN ~ and what you need to know...

I welcome STUDENTS OF ALL LEVELS and happy to share this wonderful art form with those learning just for fun or for the more serious musician who wants more from their instrument.

I've grown up much of my life witnessing various great conga players that I have been privileged to experience. At a workshop held by Thaddeus with several other students, I was able to gain a much better understanding of conga rhythms and patterns. In addition to this, Thaddeus brings extensive knowledge on the history of the conga to further my understanding and learning. With a group performance at the end of the workshop season, our group was able to demonstrate what we learned for many others.

Thaddeus helped me learn various characteristics of percussion and I am grateful for his instruction. One thing I appreciated about learning percussion from Thaddeus was his ability to not only be able to explain the music but to be able to artfully explain musical concepts, relationships between percussionist and other musicians in a group, and how to use the various percussive instruments. Thaddeus' decades of experience become evident in his teaching. Thanks to the instruction I received, I was able to perform much more confidently in various performance and live group environments.
