Students can expect to learn the fundamental technique for learning cello or viola da gamba, through listening and playing exercises. My goal is to make lessons and practicing more like playing, and less like having to do something difficult. We'll find the right book to work from, and go from there! I will especially appreciate students who are genuinely interested and motivated and can set aside a bit of time each day to practice.

About Christien

Hi! I have a degree in Early Music Voice from the Longy School of Music of Bard College, and have studied voice with private teachers intermittently over the past two decades. I also have a Master's in Cello Performance, and can teach cello at the beginner to upper intermediate level. My experi

The main thing that I like to remind students of, when they take lessons with me, is that music is FUN! A lot of hard work goes into it, but the end result is always rewarding! I am a pretty laid back teacher, yet I still work to inspire my students to try their hardest and to be the best that they can be at what they do. It is very important to me that my students get their musical wants AND needs fulfilled.

For cello, I take the standard approach; getting to know the instrument and assigning various exercises so that the student will gain technical fluency, and building repertoire. Although I am not a certified Suzuki teacher, I do use some of their methods, since I, myself was a Suzuki student. I like teaching the student memorization of pieces, so that they can focus on technique and expression within a given piece.

In my cello lessons we will work on a variety of topics, including:

-Gaining a feel and command for your own instrument.

-Finding your SOUND: Helping you ...

About Makala

I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :) For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon

"Anna is amazing! For the past two years, she has provided individual cello instruction to our 10th grader. She is patient, kind, and easily able to share her knowledge and skills with her students. Under her guidance he has improved his technique and gained valuable experience at his recitals. She has also helped him prepare pieces for his auditions at CCA and SDYS. Highly recommend!"

"I have been her student over two and a half years now. Over the past 4 months she converted to online lessons due to the COVID pandemic. At the beginning I was not sure I could get the same quality or experience from the cello lesson without seeing her in person. However, her teaching via FaceTime was seamless and I was able to follow her teaching without any problems. She is the best instructor ever in-person and online for teaching the cello!"

As a cellists she plays all over the Los Angeles area in various Orchestras. She is the Founder and Music Director of her own orchestra Culver City Chamber Orchestra.
Arlette loves to teach and as I watch her teaching she enjoys her students and she makes fell comfortable and relax during their lesson. This is why at the end do 6 months there're is a recital and they all have improved so well.

"Nicholas is an inspiring teacher who strives for excellence while focusing on the student's individual situation and needs. Beginning lessons as an adult with some musical experience with other instruments as a child and early teen, he has been able to build quickly on what I already knew, and "undo" improper technique which could have caused physical harm if continued. He is able to encourage and motivate in the difficult and frustrating moments common to all students.

I highly recommend Nicholas for any age or level student."

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …
