I am a technique-focused teacher insofar as making sure any student of mine is avoiding bad and sometimes unhealthy habits in their playing. I do, however, try to find fun ways to work on technique, with the end goal being playing repertoire that is fun for the student. I believe technical exercises have their place in learning any instrument, but that it's important to spend the majority of your practice time on material which is ultimately enjoyable to play.

About Joshua

I've been playing guitar since I was eight, starting out playing rock and roll, then focusing on classical training for my college career. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I studied classical composition as a classical gui

My son Jake wanted to learn some Boston songs that my husband always plays, and Josh was the perfect teacher for him! Jake had been playing 2 years when we found Josh. I was impressed by his ability to make stuff like technique and scales fun for students. Highly recommend!
Scott
My middle son took an interest in classical guitar and Josh was perfect to get him going. We bought the books recommended by Josh which gave my son the basics. Josh follows the pace of the student and was flexible when teaching from books.
Julie
I wanted to learn more than just the basic chords and Josh was a great teacher! He explains things in a way that's easy to understand. I took guitar lessons when I was little and he helped me to build on what I already knew. He also encouraged me to pick songs I wanted to learn rather than stick to a book. Scheduling was easy and he's really responsive to messages.

Great at making sure you understand the basics of music theory before proceeding to the instrument itself. Helping me become a more confident and smarter musician.
Francine D.
I've taken lessons before and have always become disappointed because there was never any structure to the lessons and theory was treated as secondary. I wanted to really delve into theory because that is the knowledge needed to have no limits. Finally, I found Jimmy. He is a true teacher. Jimmy makes sure he teaches you the theory behind what you are doing. I have been playing for over ten years and was not progressing. After just a few lessons with him, I am starting to truly see the fretboard. I am finally excited again!

Phil is very friendly and pleasant. He has a quaint in-home studio that is filled with music books, instruments and art. Exercises for Practicing Guitar Chords

Some instructors add C7, D7, E7, G7, A7 and B7. The F chord is always the most difficult for the beginning guitar player because you hold two strings down with one finger. Ideally, you want your basic guitar chords to sound clean and crisp – no muffled strings. Keep practicing the individual chord …
