About Juan
New York city composer and guitarist Juan Calderon is a native of Ecuador raised in Colombia. He immigrated to Miami at age 20 to escape the political climate of the late 90’s, and resides in Manhattan since 2008.

Juan’s music blends elements from his unique life experiences, having been raised as an only child by a single mother in a bohemian environment. He was a recording and touring rock guitarist in Colombia, and he has studied East Asian music extensively, inspired by interaction with musicians and artists in China, Japan, and Indonesia.

His latest accomplishments include a performance of his composition “Reino Incierto” at Carnegie Hall (2015) and Sounds of the City, as well as a performance of his guitar quartet composition “Rising” by the UK guitar quartet.

Juan Calderon currently studies classical guitar with Mark D
elPriora, chair of the Guitar Department at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a master degree in composition. His mentors include composers Susan Botti, Reiko Fueting, and electronic music pioneer Joel Chadabe. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Florida, where he studied jazz guitar with Tom Lippincott, and composition with Susan Epstein-Garcia.

Juan is also an avid cartoonist, collector of rare books and little cars, food adventurer and runner.

*** Lesson Details ***
Guitar teaching encompasses many disciplines. One has to be a bit of a psychologist in order to gauge a potential student needs and musical sensibilities. The mathematical aspect of musical notation and rhythm makes us part mathematicians. In the end, there is also a self-actualizing aspect to guitar teaching in the sense that we are always witness to those moments that made us decide a career on music.
During my years of guitar teaching I have encountered many types of students, and I have learned from them as much as they have learned from me as they make me question aspects of music that I would have never thought about. I have learned to not take for granted the definition of concepts such as rhythm and harmony, and to look at guitar technique from different perspectives as I find ways to accommodate to a student’s capabilities. Ultimately, it is also a job that requires a lot of planning and structure. My first step, generally, is to assess the student’s ability and interest to find material suitable for them. Then, I proceed to familiarize with the student’s musical tastes and sensibilities to assign practice material accordingly. For example, if the student is interested in rock or pop music, we will work on a particular song that fits his level and also solves a particular technical problem. During that process I will answer any of the student’s questions, and provide insight into musical terminology. We will also work on basic concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony. My training as a composer and jazz guitarists also enables me to tap into the student’s creative side. In that case, we would start with a basic blues progression and blues scales, and work on the basics of improvisation or songwriting.

Juan is wonderful and very knowledgeable in music. He is very patient and makes you feel comfortable. I leave a lesson feeling like I am accomplished and relaxed. It nice to see progress in such a little time. I go home with enthusiasm to learn more and want practice to do so.

With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

I am an accomplished, award-winning guitarist, composer and teacher and have been teaching guitar and music for 20 years. I have both a Bachelor's and a Masters Degree in Music. I teach all levels from beginner to advanced, including at the university level, and all styles (rock, jazz, blues, folk, funk, metal, shred, pop, R&B, classical, etc.). I am also a professional performer, composer, arranger, studio musician and producer, experienced in all forms, styles and genre of music.

As an experienced teacher of composition, arranging, orchestration, music theory and guitar, I have developed my own personal teaching concepts and methods for improving technique, chord/scale theory and counterpoint for various styles and genres of music. I have taught privately, in music schools, and at the university and college level.

New York City in Midtown Manhattan on the West Side. I began performing professionally at age 16, doing session work, teaching and performing. I attended the National Guitar Summer Workshop, New Milford, Connecticut, to diversify my skills, participating in master classes with guitar icons Vinnie Moore, Stanley Jordan and Mick Goodrick.

I started college at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and completed a Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude, studying jazz guitar and composition/arranging, as well as completd the Honors program at Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Music. My studies included jazz guitar with Tom Giacobetti and Ed Flanagan; jazz composition/arranging with Don Glanden, Ben Schacter and Larry McKenna; and classical composition with Matthew Greenbaum, Ph.D., Maurice Wright, D.M.A., Richard Brodhead, Ph.D., and Mark Rimple, D.M.A. I also conducted/arranged the School's Jazz Vocal Ensemble and was awarded membership in the Golden Key Honor Society. I also studied guitar privately with Shrapnel/Tone Center recording artist Greg Howe, Lasers Edge recording artist Scott McGill and Jazz icons Pat Martino (Blue Note) and Jimmy Bruno (Mel Bay).

I earned a Masters of Arts degree in music composition at Rutgers University, studying with world renowned, Pulitzer Prize winning composer Charles Wuorinen. In my first year, he was awarded a Teaching Assistantship in Music Composition and Theory.

I pursued additional studies (and master classes) in composition with celebrated composers Aaron Jay Kernis, Harvey Sollberger, Jukka Tiensuu, David Felder, Mario Davidovsky, Charles Fussell, Austin Clarkson and George Russell; film score orchestration with Scott Smalley (Film Music Institute) and film scoring with Rick Baitz (The Manhattan Producer's Alliance), as well as performance studies with Wynton Marsalis, Max Roach, Billy Taylor, Bill Shindling, Magmus Andersson, Stu Hamm, Terry Bozzio, Frank Gambale, Larry Mitchell, Andy Timmons, Adrian Legg and Blues Saraceno.

I was the Music Director and conductor for the Mondfleck Orchestra, Music Director and Composer-In-Residence for the Trash Can Society Theater Company and composer for improv theater group, The Glass Metropolis Project.

I released my critically acclaimed debut CD, a collection of virtuosic instrumental guitar music and have been interviewed and featured in many publications and websites worldwide, including Guitar Player, Guitar World, 20th Century Guitar, Guitar Chef (Italy), Guitar Mania (Canada), among many others. I was selected as a Top 5 Finalist in the 2006 North American Rock Guitar Competition, presented by Guitar Player magazine and Gibson guitars and was inducted as a new member into the 2007 Independent Artist Registry.

I was selected to be a part of the June in Buffalo Festival for Emerging Composers in Buffalo, New York, where celebrated pianist Marilyn Nonken performed my solo piano piece, Aerial Surveying. I was commissioned to compose, conduct and perform the music for Sirens, a modern dance presentation in collaboration with celebrated choreographer Julia Ritter. I was also commissioned to write a modern composition for Renaissance lute titled A Mosaic of Cement and Barbed Wire, performed at the Sarah Lawrence Summer Guitar Institute. My piece, Like Giants Through a Keyhole, trio for flute, cello and piano performed as part of the Network for New Music's Cross-Currents in Jazz and New Music: The Schooling and School of Stefan Wolpe series. My orchestra composition, Ideological Explosions of the Absurd Hero, was performed in Milan, Italy.

My music has been featured throughout film and television. I have composed the scores for many feature films, television, web and ad campaigns, and my music has been featured on MTV, VH1, NBC, CBS, ABC, Discovery, History Channel, PBS, etc.

I was a featured speaker at the Music for My Web Series Panel as part of the BlogWorld & New Media Expo held at the Javits Center in NYC on June 7, 2012.

As an actor, she studied acting with Sanford Meisner in NYC, the Rheinhardt Seminar in Vienna, Austria and has been teaching and directing beginning, intermediate and professionsl singers and actors for over fifteen years. In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

Mary is a lively, voluble person with enormous experience particularly in musical theater who enjoys working with students.
Initially and as the student moves along, Mary assesses talent and abilities and then continues to periodically reassess the learning in a manner that never ceases to amaze me. I have been working with Mary for six months and found her evaluations of my strengths and what I need to work on to be spot on every time.
What I esteem most is Mary's technical acumen, the techniques she learned from her teachers and mentors and her experience as a performer. Her keen ear and eye immediately pick out every nuance being sung that needs work. She answers questions about where "to go" in throat, mouth, tongue, torso, etc., demonstrating how to correctly produce the sounds, tones, and supported breathing in question. Voice teachers, of course, are supposed to do this. Mary does this superbly.
If you are seeking a teacher who knows her technique, especially in musical theater, I highly recommend Mary.

Hi Mary,
In my opinion, our session last night wasn't productive. My opinion is, you weren't really interested in teaching me. Out of the 60 minute session. I only did about 3 to 5 minutes of exercises. You spent 55 minutes talking about your past and present students, professional actors you know, show business, acting techniques and your accomplishments. You did talk about about the script that i would read and the emotion behind it, but that lead into more about your students and professional actors you know. it took you 30 minutes in your office to find that script, (which should have been done a head of time) then we went downstairs and another 25 minutes of talking before i could read it to you.

Towards the end when i finally spoke up about so much time being passed and nothing being done. You said you needed to see my personality so you can know where to start with me. That made no sense to me, how are you seeing my personality if you are the one mostly talking about your accomplishments and who you know and what you've done?
Why not pick a point and start there and see what my weak and strong points are? You also asked me the same questions you asked me on the phone, have you ever taken lessons before, why do you want to act, what do you do for work which to me just consumed more time.

What i found surprising and discouraging was when you asked me why would I take acting classes up here when there are some of the best acting schools in the world just an hour away in New York City? I wish you had said that to me over the phone before our meeting, I would reconsider taking lessons from you and just spend the extra money and go down to the city. If i were an instructor i would be grateful for anyone who sacrificed their time and money to come see me, and never ask why they chose me when there is better not that far away. With that said I have decided to cancel my remaining lessons with you please do not bill me any further.

American violinist Emily V. is an active and versatile performer of chamber and orchestral music. As a chamber musician, Emily has appeared with the Mannes American Composers Ensemble in the ensemble's Alice Tully Hall debut. Additionally, she has collaborated with the Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo in a concert that has been broadcast on WWFM, and is a member of Trio des Waldes, a horn trio that has performed throughout NYC and on the Bucks County (PA) Performing Arts concert series.

I'm a musician proficient in multiple styles. My main focuses are Jazz, Rock and R&B. I teach Piano, Guitar (including bass), Singing and musical theory from beginning through advanced.

I have worked with Norah Jones, Katharine McPhee, Miranda Lambert, Walking Shapes, The Wailers, Alabama as well as Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. I also performed on Miranda Lambert’s national television commercial for Cotton’s Fabric Of Our Lives Campaign

In addition to live and studio work I have scored and performed music for television and film. My credits include MSNBC’s “Locked Up” series;
as well as Amnesty International’s documentary Women of Liberia.

I have a little background with making beats on my computer, but felt that sometimes I’m limited, So I figured it would help if I took a drum lesson. It was awesome! I have a little electronic kit that we hooked up to my computer! I’m so happy I booked Chris! Chris is an awesome teacher and knowledgeable about everything having to do with music and theory! He even hooked me up with some theory and keyboard techniques that just opened me right up! On top of that, he’s played with a couple bands that I love! I’m excited for our next lesson on an actual drum kit!

Even if you have never held a guitar before, I will have you jamming by the end of our first lesson. I don't use note names, but instead teach you to improvise in every key using memorable, movable patterns on the fretboard. I’ll show you how to find the key of any given song so that you can begin playing along with your favorites in your free time using the patterns I’ve shown you. Getting better at guitar is all about spending time with the instrument; what you will learn in our lessons will provide you with ample material to practice by giving you the tools to make an infinite amount of great sounding music, even after just one lesson! After your fretting hand has become accustom to the neck of the guitar and your picking/strumming hand has developed the necessary coordination, we will build your chord vocabulary and begin experimentin
g with different rhythms.

Learning theory can be a turn off for some people in the early stages of guitar playing, but as soon as you express interest in understanding why and how the chords in your classic tunes sound so good together, I’m great at explaining to people with all different learning styles. Visual learners, especially, will greatly benefit from the fact that I am a left-handed player. When one righty tries to show another righty something on guitar, the student has to take the extra step of inverting the finger positions being shown to him/her by the teacher. With me, however, our guitars will align in a mirror image. The second you see me play something, it will be much easier to process what I am doing than if you had to flip it.

I have a great deal of experience teaching complete beginners of all ages and find it extremely fulfilling to bring someone who has never held a guitar before the incredible joy and liberation that comes with learning how to play along. Study with me, and you will connect on a much deeper level with the music that you have been listening to your whole life.

I hadn't picked up a guitar in 10 years and didn't remember anything, so I was pretty scared to start again. Ian was really patient and kind. He suggested that we start with a song I liked and knew well, which was a great idea. We started by playing some simple finger patterns along with the music & pretty soon I felt more confident and was glad that I started playing again. Ian is an amazing guitarist, so I thought he might be too advanced to teach me, but he was able to work really well with me as a beginner.

I have been professionally playing drums for almost 15 years and teaching professionally for 10. I have toured the country opening up for major label bands and artists. I have played drums for numerous bands and artists including Grammy winning and nominated artists for Audiomack's Trap Symphony. I have also played drums for a nationally aired commercial for Champagne.

I currently teach a number of students from ages 7-25, and I teach all levels from beginner to advanced. For the older students I love to help get them into bands and open jams so they can experience playing live in front of a crowd and with other musicians.

I love teaching and playing all styles of music from Jazz, Metal, Rock, Latin, Rap, Reggae, etc. When I'm not teaching I am traveling with various bands around the country and playing on major music festivals.
