My goal as a teacher is to make students successful in their goals. I work with a variety of people; some of them study music for personal enjoyment and others for their musical career. Everyone responds differently to music, that is why I prepare special lessons for each student. It is important that my students enjoy what they are playing and for that reason I have a variety of repertoire that they can choose from.
From a lot of experience with beginner piano students, both young and adults, I have been able to find a regimen of piano teaching that combines time efficiency with fun. As the lessons continue, I slowly add new tools to each weekly lesson that are exiting and interesting. While working with intermediate to advanced students, I have had coached them to apply and get accepted into some of the top Universities and Conservatories in the country. My students, beginner intermediate and advanced levels, have been awarded for their performances and activities in schools and ...

I am also a composition teacher. I work with composition students from beginner to advance. My composition students, over the years, range from all ages starting at 7. My students, after the first year, have been able to write string quartets and piano trios. My advanced students have entered competitions all over the country and are very successful in their composition practice. Some of their compositions have been performed in famous concert halls and schools.
As a vocal coach, I work with students of all ages. The repertoire that I recommend to beginner students includes Disney, Broadway and classical music. For intermediate and advanced vocal student, I have successfully prepared them for competitions, Broadway and University auditions as well as personal enjoyment.
Most recently I held a piano, composition and vocal recital for my students at the world famous Steinway Hall in New York City. I believe that some students work better when there is motivation for performance activities. For that reason I host these type of events. Students that decide they want to take place in these events perform among all levels. I offer these performance opportunities as an invitation. Each student has a choice as to whether they would like to perform.

To my teaching, I bring almost forty years of experience as a performer, recording artist, and historian. I teach students of any age (i.e. children, teenagers, and adults), and at all levels of experience (i.e. beginners, intermediate, and advanced), the technical and expressive intricacies of the standard classical repertoire. But what makes my teaching unique or those elements drawn from my background beyond music. Prior to attending The Juilliard School, from which I graduated with a Masters Degree (M.M.) in Piano Performance, I graduated from Brown University with a Bachelors Degree (B.A.) in History and Russian Language & Literature. Over the course of my career as a performer and teacher, my first-rate education has set me apart from other pianists, particularly as it relates to my work researching, playing, recording, and writing about music connected to African American culture. In lessons, I draw my own experience and education and encourage all my students to develop ...

About John
I believe that music is for everybody, not just professionals. My many years of teaching beginners, teenagers, and adults of all levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced, has shown me that, with practice and time, virtually everyone can attain a high level at the keyboard and play the piano and the incredible music written for it from the inside, not just from the outside looking in. If this challenge sounds like fun, I would be happy to help you (or your child) on that musical journey.

I firmly believe that experiencing music and being inquisitive are invaluable to learning how to play music. Studying music is not just about learning the material and regurgitating it, but discovering why a moment of music is cool and examining what about that moment makes it hit you in the right spot. I will be the guide that the student needs when he or she does not know where to go with his or her studies, but I want to encourage students to bring in music they want to learn, or discuss music that they think is cool and use that as a jumping off point into our lessons.

About Sam
With beginning students, I will lay out the fundamentals, teaching all of the scales, basic chords, key signatures and time signatures, and gradually integrate strategies for reading music. Depending on what the student is interested in learning, I will pull from my pool of repertoire - we could be studying a Bach Invention at the same time as a Billy Joel song. Classical music is great for technique and in many ways textbook for teaching harmony, but I play and love contemporary music, and will teach anything, as long as there is some form of musical knowledge to be gained from the material.

Dan is definitely the best voice instructor I have ever had. Not only is he warm and down to earth, he is incredibly supportive, knowledgeable and makes practice fun. He took a lot of time to get to know my goals and interests when it came to singing; my confidence in my voice has been shaken a lot due to less than encouraging voice instructors and he was very empathetic and genuine in his support. I would highly recommend him as a voice instructor!

I am highly adaptive to each student's unique personality and playing style and I usually devise a tailored plan with the student to achieve their goal in the most efficient way possible. I promote active critical thinking and self-awareness in the learning process to achieve the level of musical intelligence that is essential to a successful musician. With more than 10 years of international on-stage experience as a soloist, I am more than happy to provide useful guidance for prospective students who are aiming to become professional musicians in the future.

About CHUN
At age of 28, pianist Chun Wang has already garnered acclaim as a promising artist. A review from The Friends of Music described his recital in Durban, South Africa as “truly remarkable”, and his debut with Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra in 2010 was hailed by the local newspaper Beeld of South Africa for “the full sound and magic he obtains from the Steinway to disclose the true French romanticism…One does not often hear a pianist with so many lyrical qualities in mostly lustful and powerful music.”

Born in Fuzhou, China, Chun Wang started playing the piano at the age of five. With excellent progress confirmed with prizes in major national competitions, he entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing for further studies at the age of 13. He completed his Master of Music degree in May 2015 with Robert McDonald at the Jui
lliard School in New York and joined Manhattan School of Music in September for his doctoral studies with Solomon Mikowsky.

In his professional career, Chun Wang has performed at many famous venues such as Salle Cortot in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Sala Cecilia Meireles in Rio de Janeiro, and Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires. He launched his career in Latin America after winning the Villa-Lobos Competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2006, starting with several performances in Argentina in the following years, including a concerto appearance with Buenos Aires Philharmonic (Teatro Colon) Orchestra. In June 2016, he made his first appearance in Cuba with the National Symphony Orchestra in Havana, playing Richard Strauss' Burleske. Chun Wang later performed the same concerto at his New York orchestra debut in 2017 with MSM Symphony Orchestra, which received critical acclaim. He is also a laureate of several major international contests such as the 2008 UNISA (University of South Africa) Competition in South Africa, Grand Prix Animato in Paris, and Japan’s most prestigious Hamamatsu Piano Competition. In April 2017, he became the third Chinese ever to win the prestigious Jaen International Piano Competition in Spain, one of the longest-running music contests in Europe, along with a CD release from NAXOS in 2018.

Do you want to learn about jazz piano, improvisation, harmony, composition, arranging, and be able to sit in at a jam session anywhere in New York City or in your hometown? Be admitted to a jazz school or music college? Build a solid repertoire, become proficient at playing standards, write tunes, and maybe put your own band together or feel comfortable joining an existing outfit?

I’m thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to go through all of these exciting steps in the life of a musician myself, and I’m definitely looking forward to sharing this experience with you. I began to learn jazz piano in Paris (France) as a teenager, and later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full tuition scholarship. I recently moved to New York City to continue to grow as an artist in this utterly inspiring metropolis, full of talent and creativity.

About Jim
I offer lessons that are well suited for:

- jazz pianists of all levels;
- adventurous classically trained pianists who feel the urge to explore improvisation and the swinging world of jazz;
- all other instrumentalists eager to either strengthen their basic piano skills or deepen the practice of improvisation on their principal instrument;
- vocalists who wish to hone their piano accompaniment skills;
- and finally writers and computer musicians committed to improving in the areas of jazz harmony, arranging, composition, improvisation, and enthusiastic about incorporating new techniques into their productions.

In addition to the actual lessons, make sure to check out my blog regularly for tips, ideas, transcriptions, analyses, and in depth study of intriguing jazz topics that will help you walk in the masters’ Footprints and make Giant
Steps towards your Freedom Jazz Dance!

REPERTOIRE

The repertoire studied during the lessons can be as vast as jazz is diverse. I curate a playlist on Spotify you can dig into entitled “FunJazz Piano Lessons”, which is a selection of standards, jazz tunes, latin tunes, rhythm changes, blues, and ballads performed by a wealth of diverse musicians, and covering a wide range of styles and eras. In fact, exploitable melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements for the purpose of these lessons can be drawn from most music, within and beyond the scope of jazz… I’m therefore open to – and encourage – students’ suggestions: practicing a piece one actually knows and enjoys can be a strong motivational factor and often enhances the learning experience.

STUDY MATERIAL AND RESOURCES

- Jamey Aebersold, Charlie Parker Omnibook: for C instruments (treble clef) (Alfred Music Publishing)
- Fiona Bicket, The Barry Harris Approach to Improvised Lines & Harmony: An Introduction
