I absolutely LOVE teaching. I leave every lesson with a new found excitement and often find that I'm learning as much as my students. I believe that the "process" is just important as the "product" when it comes to learning.

I recently graduated with my second masters degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in Music Education. I also hold a Master of Music and Bachelor of Music both in Vocal Performance. I also recently sang for the second time at Carnegie Hall - 9 months pregnant!

Curriculum will vary student to student. We will initially speak about goals, long-term and short-term, and what you hope to achieve. Based on this, I will tailor lesson plans to the needs of each student.

Great Dedicated Instructor!

She first lets the student warm up and asks for short-term and long-term goals. From there develops a plan for the student to follow, that she feels will show the best results. She is always asking how comfortable one is whether with certain exercises, ranges, or songs and if the student is fine with her current curriculum or what the student prefers to work on first. You can tell she has a passion for music as we all do that are looking for lessons, and her goal is to help us accomplish what we want to with our voice to the best of our and her abilities. She also knows music theory really well and provides information, and she has a beautiful voice!

**Joshua is currently performing in the Broadway company of Les Miserables so is only teaching in person in NY and online via Skype or FaceTime.**

As an actor, Joshua graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Judith Blazer’s 2005/2007 company of the Artist’s Crossing.
Performance credits include roles in The Trojan Women, Godspell, Burn This, Comedy of Errors, Children of Eden, Othello, Show Boat, Sunday in the Park with George, The Chosen, Sweeney Todd..., The Laramie Project, and Les Miserables to name a few.
As a director, Joshua directed three sold out productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in NC and DC, received rave reviews for his work with Neil LaBute’s Some Girl(s), and just completed production for a series on the making of Oklahoma!. Other
sporadic credits include Duets for the DC Fringe Festival, a number of independent films and countless readings, workshops and concerts as well as the Washington, DC premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s, In Love and Warcraft.
Joshua has worked as a Musical Director for many shows within the NY/NJ/DC tri-state area and coaches a handful of select students. The musical play, Definition of a Housewife, conceived and written by himself and Jeffery Self had a workshop production in the summer of 2006 at Columbia University.
Most recently he appeared in Arena Stage’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, Signature Theatre’s production of Soon and is currently in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables. He is also attached to a new musical (A House of Glass) about Tennessee Williams in which Joshua will be playing the prolific writer.
Joshua was the founding Artistic Director of No Rules Theatre Company for 6 years and sits on the board of the Artists Crossing in NY, NY.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that all singing comes from the same place, technically (Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, etc.). I work more on building a strong foundation from which everything else comes. That includes breath, placement and the stripping away of bad vocal habits that inhibit us from making healthy productive sounds. A strong foundation does usually mean having a stronger sense of your "legit" voice because it takes more work to involve your palate and breath which makes Musical Theatre/Pop seem like a piece of cake. I like to work with dedicated students who are open to challenging themselves and exploring other schools of thought in order to take themselves to the next level.

I have a strong background in musical theatre but believe that it all comes from the same place. Good technique is good technique which stems from more of a "classical" background. Bel canto, if you will. It's like dancing. Dancers who study ballet are much better dancers than those who don't because they have a strong foundation from which to work.

With my actors, I start from building a foundation of a sense of truth which is inherent in all of us. We talk through/explore a number of "approaches", in order to find the individuals process. From there, we begin work on how to approach text (actions, objectives, targets, meanings, etc.)

I only work on a flex schedule with my students, so when booking lessons- rather than selecting a specific day and time for lessons, we schedule each lesson from week to week as we go. He is very detailed in getting to know what makes you what you are and where you come from. There is an established unconditional comfortability and confidence that he brings when talking to about your history and future goals, and unquestionable intrigue of interest that helps him figure out what it is you want out of a lesson, critique, or and experience.

Micheal is very passionate about his work . His passion comes across while teaching piano to me. I am an adult who decided to take up piano at a later age so it can be challenging but Michael encourages me to practice correctly and take my time to learn this new language of reading music so that I can move forward. Micheal makes it easy!

I started my musical training as a pianist at YAMAHA institute at age 4 in Japan. I was selected to enter perfect pitch class. It was designated for students who have perfect pitch and potentials to be professional musicians.

I enjoyed playing piano and electric piano and won the 1st prize at Kitakantou Electric Piano Competition hosted by YAMAHA institute. Because of the intensive training, I have been accompanying my students' recitals and performance exams.

I'm almost afraid to write this review lest Asuka's schedule gets totally filled with new students:) I started lessons with Asuka Nov 22 as a beginner and by January 15 the notes I could sing increased by an octave.

My high C/C6 came by early December, a couple of weeks after starting with Asuka. Some of this is my voice type, but I believe anyone who works with Asuka will see improvement.

I am taking lessons with a well-regarded pop teacher from the same time period and I've developed almost entirely from Asuka's lessons vs the other teacher, and quickly too with consistent practice. What Asuka teachers carries over to non-classical singing also.

Asuka is not rigid in her approach, thankfully, and she is so nice about the million things beginner singers can correct. I don't feel embarassed singing in front of her because she is non-judgmental.

I did some online lessons when she was traveling, and I got just as much out of them so even if I leave New York I will continue working with her.

About Alex
Having grown up with a father who ran a guitar shop and a professional singer for a mother, music was just another language to communicate with in our house. Learning to speak through music taught me how to focus and develop new skills, which helped me in school with everything that I have ever had to learn.

In 5th grade I started playing bass guitar at home, trombone in the school music program, and private lessons for piano. This exposed me to a wide range of music very early on.

When I was a teenager, I was the youngest person to study at Victor Wooten's first bass/nature camp in 2000, a week long master class with some of the world's most decorated musicians in Montgomery Bell State Park outside of Nashville. I played in local bands in the Berkshires, wrote music for Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, and sang such roles as Val
jean in Les Miserables and John Wilkes Booth in Assassins, as well played in orchestras across the county. I performed as both a bass player and a vocalist in the Massachusetts All-State Jazz Ensemble at Symphony Hall in Boston.

I moved to New York to get a degree in Theater as a singer and actor in 2004. Since then I've been fortunate enough to work in NY orchestras, cabarets, theater and national TV, tour the world with a variety of musical artists, work as a studio musician recording albums for songwriters, and develop musical education programs. Most recently I curated and taught the bass guitar curriculum for Yousician, a Helsinki-based music app with 25 million users in 154 countries worldwide. That has been an invaluable experience, working alongside educators and programmers in one of the world's leading countries in both education and technology.

Music has been a life-directing guide for me; from the wonder of discovery to the mastery of new and exciting techniques, music has always been a sort of way for us to communicate intimately, yet on a universal scale. To pass the same experience on to others is such a gift, and one I value greatly.

Alex is an excellent teacher who has helped me to understand not only where I can make improvements, but also given me a wide range of techniques I can use to do so. His knowledge of breathing techniques is particularly impressive, as his understanding of the impact of nerves and anxiety on the vocal. Alex's teaching style enables him to convey everything from the simple to complicated in an easily understandable, highly effective and very friendly way. I have only had a few lessons with Alex, but have made huge strides already. Very highly recommended!

I have been taking classical voice lessons for 12 years, and I have been giving singing lessons for 3 years to a wide range of students. I have a Bachelor of Music degree, with a focus in opera, so I am well-versed in many forms of technique and style. I believe that the necessary foundations of classical voice are breath control, vowel specificity, and development of tone. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

Rachel is a member of SAG-AFTRA, The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS certified), VASTA (Voice And Speech Trainers Association), NARAS (The Grammy Awards), NAMTA, NJMEA (New Jersey Music Educators Association), NAfME (National Association of Music Education), NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association,) MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs), The NJ Theatre Alliance, NSA (Nashville Songwriting Association International), and BMI (Broadcast Music Inc). She has been teaching Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer and Stella Adler-Stanislavsky-Chekhov-Meisner acting technique for all mediums for 15+ years to children, teens, and adults.

Rachel has trained at The Hages Music Studio under a master teacher for 22+ years in the Bel Canto singing technique for all genres, studied at The Stella Adler Studio of Acting in NYC as well as recorded and released her first album called "Just Meant To Be". Other credits include commercials, films, TV shows (One Tree Hill, AMC, Food Network), music videos (including Rachel's singles "Don't Even Try", "You Will Love On"), & numerous stage credits (Off-Broadway/NYC Theatre). Rachel most recently was seen in the reading of a new play "Vanishing Son" by Peter Gil-Sheridan performed in NYC. She is also a songwriter (16+ years), scriptwriter (10+ years), director (14+ years), and an international recording artist (10+ years).

Rachel has been performing for 20+ years, has performed in front of sold out crowds, and has been honored with many standing ovations. Other honors include magazine covers, featured articles, singing to thousands of people, studio recordings/albums, originated the role of "Antigone" in "Oedipus: The Musical", 2002 Helen Hayes Nomination for" Outstanding Vocal Performance in a Musical" ("Miss Adelaide" in "Guys And Dolls"), & 2008 finalist for NYC Singing Idol Competition. Rachel has also been fortunate to have worked & performed with many people in the business including Grammy-Tony-Emmy Award Winners/Nominees.

LESSON DETAILS

Whether you are a parent looking for instruction for your child, or for yourself, Rachel can customize the right program that best suits your needs. Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).

Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.

Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.

OTHER LESSON INFORMATION

SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.

ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:

1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.

2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.

3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.

4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.

5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.

6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.

We specialize in Bel Canto voice technique for the modern singer. Each student can sing all genres without sounding too classical, "fake", and without losing their voice while singing for long periods of time.

STUDIO POLICIES-

CANCELLATION:
24 hour lesson cancellation

MISSED LESSONS/MAKE UPS:
If the student needs to miss a lesson for sickness, they or their parent/ guardian, if the student is under 18, must let Rachel know at least 24 hours before their missed lesson. If they need to miss due to an other activity or vacation, they must contact Rachel at least a week from their next scheduled lesson in advance to prevent from forfeiting the lesson. All make ups will be scheduled within 4 weeks from the missed lesson. If rescheduled lesson or make up lesson is missed, no new make up will be given unless Rachel is not able to teach for some rare reason.

LATENESS:
If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.

SITTING IN: Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave.

Overall, very impressed. She is direct and doesn't tell you something you want to hear. Her evaluation process is well rounded and planned. She puts together a great curriculum to know what to expect in the coming lessons. Very easy going person and makes you feel completely comfortable at the initial lessons.

About Lyle
I am a professional singer, pianist, and teacher of the two. I have a Bachelor of Music degree from California State University Long Beach, and a Master of Music degree from University of California Los Angeles. During my study of those two degrees, I had marvelous teaching from some of the finest pianists, coaches, and voice teachers around. I can teach you how to sing with true passion, ease, and intent.

I began my study of the piano at the age of 7, my mother being my first teacher. I started on Alfred Piano Books, and still strongly believe in that same curriculum. From there I began to study classical composers like Chopin, Beethoven, Clementi, and Mozart. Although my love of classical music runs deep to my core, I love jazz, pop, and gospel music. Lyle has a singing voice that will stun and amaze you when he sings in front of you. That will immediately put you at ease and motivate you to sing better using his techniques. His classical training has proven to be a great foundation for teaching me effective ways to understand, use and improve my voice. After 2 lessons I can already see a big difference in my singing abilities and I always learn many new things at each lesson. Lyle has a really open, friendly and non judgemental demeanor and this helped a lot with my nervousness. I can't wait for my next private lesson and would encourage anyone to book him for Broadway, classical and pop singing lessons.

Hello! I'm an opera singer and director, but more importantly for you I have an innate ability to teach. I started with my younger sister and her friends when I was just a teenager, and have continued teaching on and off since then. You can expect age- and level-appropriate repertoire that will challenge you and help you grow. We will work together to find your true voice, and cultivate that to be as easy and consistent as possible.

When I started singing, I had a very small voice. I could match pitch and sounded pretty, but I had no vibrato and freedom to my sound. I am a professional opera singer with 8 years of teaching background.
I received my Artist Diploma from the Mannes School of Music, Master of Music from SUNY Purchase, and Bachelor of Music from California State University Long Beach.

I believe that healthy singing starts at the premises of classical singing and technique, which incorporates proper breath control and proper connection to the rest of the body i.e. larynx, tongue, throat, etc. Proper technique should be set into foundation in order for the music you want to create with your creative expressions to come out, and I will help you get there!

A lesson with me will include a warm-up, which will give me an idea of where we need to work, and we can discuss and interpret technique, vocal production, and tonality. We would apply this into the piece(s) you are currently working on. Then we would proceed to phrasing and stylistic approaches!

About John
John Kun Park is a recent graduate of the Mannes School of Music. He completed studies in Operatic Performance at SUNY Purchase. John will be joining the Sarasota Opera's Apprentice Artist program in the beginning of 2018.

The 2016-17 season found John in his final year of Artist Certification at the Mannes School. He was the tenor soloist in Händel's Messiah in Manhasset, NY, and then appeared as Anatol with Mannes Opera in their Spring production of Barber's Vanessa. He placed as one of six finalists for the New Jersey State Opera's Alfredo Silipigni competition shortly thereafter. John was invited to Central City Opera as an Apprentice Artist for their esteemed Bonfils-Stanton Young Artist Program. He was cast as the cover of Don José for the season of Bizet's Carmen, and debuted as Don José for the company's Apprentice produc
tion.

The summer of 2016 found John in the Dolomites of Italy, appearing as Don José in Bizet's Carmen under Music Academy International's affiliation of the Trentino Music Festival, under the baton of Christopher Larkin and direction of David Gately. He appeared a finalist in New York's Joy of Singing competition in the Spring of 2016, and was hired to cover Don José for Venture Opera's winter production of Carmen.

During his time at SUNY Purchase, John appeared as Le Prince Charmant in Massenet's Cendrillon, Eisenstein in J. Strauss' Die Fledermaus, and Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. His studies while in Los Angeles found John appearing as Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon, and B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly under the Opera Gang company.
