We went with online piano lessons at the moment due to COVID, but I was nervous about the format as the lessons are for my five-year-old daughter, so I was concerned the additional technology would be an impediment. Dr. Merkel was wonderful. He was friendly and encouraging to my daughter, ensuring she knew she could ask any questions she might have at any point. He absolutely made the technology work for us, and my daughter learned more than I would have thought possible in 30 minutes. She is counting down to her next lesson!

I have been an orchestral tubist and university teacher for the past 10 years. My students regularly have been featured in the region band, all-state band, scholarship recipients, graduate assistantships, regional and international competitions, and regional and international tuba euphonium conferences. I have a strong focus on developing the fundamental of brass playing, so the instrument acts as an extension of their artistry.

About Douglas

Dr. Douglas B, Jr is the Tuba and Euphonium Faculty at Winthrop University, where he teaches applied tuba and euphonium, directs the Winthrop University Tuba-Euphonium Choir, coaches brass chamber music, teaches brass methods, introduction to music technology, and serves as coordinator of recording

Dr. Douglas Black is not only an accomplished and extremely knowledgeable tuba player, but he's also a clear and thorough instructor. Tuba and euphonium players looking for their Master Yoda need look no further. Plus, he's a fun guy to work with and is flexible when unexpected life events come up. His rates are a bargain when you consider his level of experience and the quality of his instruction. 5 stars.

"My brother took lessons from Mr. Talley before me, and when I got into Band I started too.  Thanks to Mr. Talley I  made 1st chair in the Region Band twice on Tuba.  When I switched to Euphonium in high school, he was right there helping me with the change from Tuba.  I made the Region Band again on a new instrument only a few weeks after I switched, and he was the reason why.  He always seemed to know exactly what I needed to do to get better.  Even now, years later, I can still call him any time and ask him about music and he always helps me."

"My sons (one a beginner on trombone, one who already played tuba proficiently) began lessons with Mr. Smith during the shutdown last spring when we weren’t able to take in-person local lessons. They have really enjoyed learning from someone whose specialty is brass and have been motivated to practice on their own. Highly recommend!"

"I took tuba lessons from Brian for a few years, and I highly recommend him. He is an excellent and passionate music educator. He is great at keeping students challenged and motivated, and he has a cheerful and fun personality. Thanks to Brian's help, I made first chair All-State tuba, won a couple of soloist competitions, and was accepted to multiple colleges for music performance. With those kinds of results, I wholeheartedly recommend Brian for private music lessons."

"My son started with Mr. Gallo at the beginning of summer and we have decided to continue into the school year. He can easily read each students musical ability and creates a lesson plan accordingly. His critiques, while kindly, are thorough as he strives to get the best out of students.
My son enjoys the lessons and has improved in sound quality and technique. Web based lessons have worked out great for us as my son plays the tuba. Mr. Gallo has been flexible with the schedule which we appreciate. We highly recommend Mr. Gallo and the Take Lessons website/platform."
