Private Tabla Teacher

Hello,
Thank you for visiting my profile.
I started learning Tabla when I was 5 and still remember vividly when mum took me to classes 3 times a week for several hours. I used to sit, listen and play with my classmates during those hours and that experience has left an indelible mark. My fingers are 'hard-wired' to play and create sounds on the tabla. Every teacher will tell you, in order to play properly and create perfect sounds, everyday practice is the essential component.

Currently, I teach 17 students at BAPS temple in Edison and have been teaching there for the last 6 years.
I also have 3 students who visit my home weekly.

Please contact me for additional information.
Thank you.

I have been teaching Tabla for the last 13 years in Chicago, New Jersey, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The initial few years of Tabla is focused on proper hand/finger placement and technique. Starting with few simple letters and building them into phrases, sentences, and full compositions. I try to exposure students to the language of the music. Therefore, I give students a general framework and ask them to compose themselves. As I guide them through the process, this exercise empowers students to create on their own and strengthen their logical thinking process.

Once students are able to produce desired sounds and play certain compositions in a Tabla solo repertoire, I introduce accompaniment material which can practically be applied when performing with singers, instrumentalists, and dancers.

Along the way, I share historical information on the art as well as recommend resources such as books, recordings, and websites for a well-rounded learning experience.

Tabla:
A South Asian percussion instrument similar to bongos, consisting of a pair of drums, used in traditional, classical, popular and folk music. The tabla consists of two single headed, barrel shaped small drums of slightly different size and shapes. Learning starts with basics or hand technique, rhythms, and playing along with songs.

I will definitely be expanding my accordion skills & of music theory . I’ll also be adding some 😎 Jazz Standards to my repertoire ☺️.

Karen was not prepared for the lesson. She spent 15 minutes trying to send me photos from a beginner Tabla book available on Amazon. She did not own a set of Tabla drums. She ensured me she could teach anything, but could not pronounce the words used for proper Tabla technique, knew no history and could not even teach me to tune. She literally was reading out of the book figuring it out along the way. I lost a lot of trust from this and asked for a full refund for future lessons.

"As a beginner with zero experience playing any instruments, I am so grateful for Nabin's expertise, patience, and natural ability to instruct. Nabin makes it easy and fun to learn playing the tabla. He sets reasonable expectations, creates a fun and low-stress environment, and is lovely to work with! I look forward to continue working with him and would highly recommend him!"

"As a continuing tabla student, having started the study of tabla and mridangam a while back, I am so happy to have found Nabin. Nabin Shrestha is a busy performing artist as well as a top-notch instructor. On the first lesson Nabin knew exactly where I was at and what I needed to work on. Nabin as a teacher challenges me to the point where I can’t keep up, then instead of letting me throw my tablas under a steam-roller, he backs it up a little bit and allows me to catch up. Nabin’s prolific mastery of tabla includes a vast repertoire of traditional and original compositions, endless variations of these compositions, thorough knowledge and application of a variety of styles and techniques, as well as the ability to transmit as much of this as a diligent student can assimilate. Nabin is extraordinarily patient as I struggle with basic concepts like how to count to three. Joking aside, Nabin is a top notch performer and instructor and I would highly recommend him to anyone who seriously desires to learn this art. Thank you Nabin for being so generous and taking the time to share with me the poetry that is the art of tabla!"

"I am honored to be learning from Pandit Nabinji. He is one of the best tabla players. His vast knowledge, expertise, dexterity in playing combined with patience and pleasant personality is a rare and wonderful combination. Each class is combination of technique, wisdom, and soul soothing in an otherwise chaotic and stressful world. I eagerly looked forward to my weekly class. I have always wanted to learn tabla and it took me 35 years to find an excellent teacher and fulfill my dreams!. Many more years with Nabinji on this incredible journey.
Cheers,
Balaji"

"Nabinji is a great Tabla player himself and a great teacher. He is a gifted teacher who is able to work with students at various levels of exposure to Tabla and is able to explain the concepts in a clear easy to learn style. I have been his student for a while now and am grateful to have a teacher like him who makes learning Tabla fun. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in learning Tabla, whether a newbie OR a experience player wanting to improve the skills."

"Nabin Shrestha is an exceptional teacher of the tabla. He is a great choice for learning this profound art- form for all ages and all walks of life. On a personal level I have found him to be very focused in his teaching style but also very patient and very process oriented - which is the kind of teacher I need seeing how I just do this for “fun.” For those who want to learn this art as more of a career path my feeling is that Nabin would also be exceptional because of both his diligence and enthusiasm to classical Indian music. I have also known that Nabin is open minded to other approaches as he has collaborated with other musicians of the “rock” genre, etc. So if you are looking for a table teacher that has a strong creative side Nabin is the man."
