Tabla:  
A South Asian percussion instrument similar to bongos, consisting of a pair of drums, used in traditional, classical, popular and folk music. The tabla consists of two single headed, barrel shaped small drums of slightly different size and shapes.  Learning starts with basics or hand technique, rhythms, and playing along with songs.

My name is Karen D. I’ve had the pleasure of performing, singing, writing, and recording since I was seven years old. Besides being an Honor Graduate of Berklee School of Music, I have been a lifelong student of the international world-renowned instructors Dante Pavone and Charlie Banacos. It is completely untrue that some people are "born to sing or play an instrument" while others are not. With my expertise a person who believes they have no talent can learn any instrument, the most "tone deaf" can learn to sing perfectly in tune, and someone who thinks they have "no talent" can become better than anyone out there. I have a unique and very patient teaching style that makes learning any instrument seem easy!

It all started out in a small town called Chatham, NJ where I spent the first thirteen years of my life. I remember loving music as early as I could walk and talk. I started taking guitar lessons when I was seven years old. Along with the guitar, came a love for singing and writing my own songs. When we moved to Pennsylvania the guitar came with me. Throughout my high school years, I spent hours playing with teachers, fellow students, and parties.

When I was sixteen every week for three years I would drive an hour into Philadelphia, by myself, to study with world-famous Artie Singer. His students include such names as Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Al Martino, and Bobby Rydel. Artie co-wrote and produced two massive hit records “At the Hop” and “Rock ‘n Roll is Here to Stay,” both recorded by Danny and the Juniors. 

While going to a Community College in Philadelphia the music teacher there took notice of me, pulled me aside, and told me about a great music school I should attend. He then sent away the application and helped me fill it out. The next thing I knew I was in Boston attending Berklee School of Music! I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Jazz and Rock Composition, Arranging, and Guitar.

I had originally gone to Berklee intending to major in voice. However, I had no luck with the vocal department there and ended up with nodules on my vocal cords. The damage was so significant that I had to stop singing during my four years at Berklee and turned to study Guitar and Composition.

I tried every vocal teacher in town wanting more than anything to be a singer. What I found was no teacher could help me and it seemed obvious that even though they had the “big name” they didn't know what they wt. I was losing hope. The combination of this roadblock and my persistence led me to the greatest thing that ever happened in my life....... I met Dante Pavone!

I kept hearing about a singing teacher named Dante Pavone. Since I had already tried everyone else, I decided to give him a shot.

Gopala is an expert tabla and harmonium teacher with extensive experience teaching these instruments to students of all levels. Lessons are geared to helping the student understand the language of tabla and harmonium, learn the proper techniques, and become versed in the art of playing these instruments. Gopala offers a unique step-by-step method of teaching tabla and harmonium that will greatly help the student to become proficient in playing these instruments at no time through regular devoted practice.

Gopala is a professional tabla and harmonium teacher with over 7 years of teaching and performing experience. He graduated from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) with a BFA degree in World Music Performance specializing in tabla. He learned tabla professionally from world-renowned tabla master Swapan Chaudhuri, from world-renowned tabla expert Debashish Chaudhuri, and from master percussionist Randy Gloss.

Gopala teaches tabla and harmonium students of all different ages and levels and helps them to become versed in the art of playing tabla and harmonium through a simple and effective systematic step-by-step method. Since tabla is a language-based instrument he first teaches students the basics of tabla which requires an understanding of the basic 'bols' (tabla strokes) which are syllables that the student has to first memorize in order to learn how to play them on the tabla with the correct technique. He also encourages students to follow a consistent program of regular devoted practice which he helps to facilitate for them during the lessons so that they can learn fast and advance in their playing. Since tabla and harmonium are not easy instruments to learn he encourages his students to follow the step-by-step method that he teaches which, if followed correctly and with regularity, can guarantee the students' success in mastering the art of playing tabla and harmonium.

As the student advances he or she will come to realize that learning these instruments is a great and fun way to improve one's concentration, memorization, and attention!

My kids look forward to Mr. B. each week.   He teaches one kid piano, and the other guitar.  Mr. B. is very patient and engaging, and makes music fun.  My kids would not stick with their instruments if they had a teacher who was too focused on theory, Mr. B. manages to weave that in while keeping things interesting.

Mr. B is amazing with my two boys who have been taking piano with him for almost 3 years. He is very patient in teaching them theory and putting it into practice, but he allows them to express themselves. My kids always look forward to their lessons with Mr. B and for good reason.
