I have always loved to sing, and sang in several choirs when I was younger. But I had "lost" my voice, and wanted to see if I could recover it. Andrea was wonderful in working with me: I was barely able to release any sound when we started our lessons. Within weeks, Andrea helped me discover how to form the vowels and release the sound. [I have moved out of state, so Andrea only had a limited time to work with me.]

She is passionate about music, and yet very patient with her students. She did not patronize me with false praise when I wasn't getting it, but she still encouraged me. And when I did get it, she was quick to affirm my progress. I strongly recommend Andrea as a voice teacher.

About Karissa

Born and raised in Burley, Idaho, my parents purchased a piano from an auction for my sister and I when I was seven. After a family friend taught me my first scale, I played it non-stop. My parents both decided it was time to invest in lessons so I could learn to play at least more than one thing! With encouragement from my teacher, I began teaching piano lessons during my sophomore year of high school and I have loved it ever since. I have had a lot of experience, teaching children as young as five, as well as adults with no musical background.

In 2011, I graduated from Colorado Christian
University with a bachelor's degree in Music Ministry. I have been classically trained and my favorite composers are Chopin and Debussy. I've also spent a lot of time playing popular music and in worship bands and love to encourage students in both classical and popular music. I moved to Nashville in September of 2011 to explore Music City and moved back to the Denver area in November of 2013. I am very excited to add teaching back into my life.

I want my students to look forward to their lessons every week!

I strive to get to know each student, understand their learning style, and customize lessons to their goals and pace. I make sure the student understands each concept we work on before moving on to the next. Typically my students work on songs that will teach fundamentals and/or technique, and for fun, we will add material of the students choice to keep the process interesting and relevant to them.

During the lesson, you'll find that I am laid back but excited to help the student learn. Not only do I customize each of my lessons, but the overall curriculum as well. Should you have specific preferences, I am always willing to look at any books you may already own to see what can be used there. If you do not have a preference, I can offer guidance.

Each week students are sent home with a notebook to record notes from their lesson. It includes a list of which songs to practice and specific goals for each item. I find that this helps keep students on track throughout the week so they can remember past lessons and connect the content to current lessons.

I have been classically trained and hold a degree in Worship Ministry. Experience in worship and secular bands through college and today have helped develop my strengths in these areas. Born in Boston mass I am a DU educated pianist comfortable in any Jazz, Rock, or Classical setting but find my first love is the bluesy rollicking piano reminiscent of Jerry Lee Lewis, Dr. John, or Ray Charles. You might have seen me around town in my Top 40 group, Jazz trio, Funk band, Gospel choir, Burlesque band, or as accompaniment to any of the extremely talented singers I have worked with. I'm also a composer and songwriter with a sardonic songwriting style compared to Mose Allison and Dave Frishberg.

I attended the University of Denver'€™s Lamont School of Music and graduated with a
B.M. in Jazz and Commercial Piano. Not only have I studied intensely with local fixture Eric Gunnison, but also with internationally touring artist Gerri Allen and even with jazz legend Billy Taylor at a summer music institute in Amherst, Mass. In Highschool I won the Clarke Terry award for outstanding musicianship. In college I won the Lamont Made composition contest two years in a row, my band The Orchid Room won the Lamont Jazz Chamber contest and I was a recipient of the Cherrington Global Scholarship, a grant that allowed me to spend a year performing and studying in Australia.

Since graduating college I have worked as the pianist on a cruise ship and have performed in Mexico, Hawaii, South America, French Polynesia, and Australia. I have recorded with LA based R&B artist Molly Cottrell, South By Southwest nominated Folk artist Leah Druzinski, and have had my music produced by Ikey Owens (keyboardist for Sublime, The Mars Volta, and Jack White.) I perform regularly at local venues Dazzle, Jazz at Jacks, and The Living Room.

I have 7 years teaching experience and am especially suited to teach jazz, rock, funk, pop, blues and salsa.
