Roger K.

Emeryville, CA

About Roger

Drawing on solid jazz theory and technique, Roger is comfortable in a variety of performing and teaching situations. He currently plays all around the bay area in a variety of settings ranging from backing 50's swing and latin dance bands, accompanying singer-songwriters, to leading progressive and chamber jazz projects. Over the last six years, he has taught children and adults of all agents, both in private practice and in classroom settings, while remaining sensitive to the needs and potential of each individual student.

Roger studied jazz performance and composition under Myra Melford a
nd Bryan Pardo at UC Berkeley where he received a Bachelors degree.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to focus on each student's unique strengths and use them to overcome their trouble spots rather than adhere to a strict curriculum. Students typically get a few exercises (usually to simplify a complex problem) to work on after every lesson, and usually show marked improvement after a few weeks of practice.

Common problems include, but are not limited to:
Recognizing and learning rhythms and strumming patterns
Developing fluidity in lines and chords
Expanding soloing techniques and tricks
Problems with pain and repetitive stress

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to have their own instruments. I can provide everything else that is necessary, including music stands, metronome, etc..

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz, though I can teach to most genres and styles because of my emphasis on technique

Arrica R.

Oakland, CA

About Arrica

I was born and raised in Los Angeles but I've just recently relocated to the Bay Area. I am a Professional Musician/Songwriter/Vocalist teaching songwriting, voice, and performance technique as well as a combination thereof. I began singing at a very young age for anyone who would listen (so my parents tell me) and began taking music lessons shortly thereafter. I am now a USC graduate and have also studied music privately for over 25 years as well as at the esteemed Vocal Power Institute. I've professionally released several albums and I am grateful to have had my music featured/licensed by
Starbucks, NBC, The CW network, NikeWomen.com, and MTV. I've toured extensively playing to audiences across the country and have had the honor of sharing the stage with artists ranging from Conor Oberst, Inara George, Johnette Napolitano, Martha Wainwright, to Jackson Browne. I have experience teaching both adults and children, and enjoy teaching beginning as well as intermediate to advanced students. In addition to teaching privately, I have experience teaching children through my volunteer work with The Girls Rock Alliance, a non-profit organization that aims to teach young girls about self-confidence and self-expression through music education.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am easy-going, friendly and I believe that developing a great student/teacher rapport is the key to making the most out of the time we spend together. The curriculum I utilize is specifically designed to meet the student's individual needs. Initially we'll spend time assessing where you are and where you'd like to be. Most importantly, we'll set goals and create a lesson plan that will allow you to attain them. We'll work on basic techniques (or intermediate to advanced depending on skill level), for example - breath support, vowel placement, posture, relaxation, the fundamentals of song structure and music theory. We'll also work on the psychology of performance and eliminating any unwanted tension that may arise. We'll choose songs to work on that you'll enjoy singing, or analyze the songs you love in order to discover and/or improve upon your own songwriting abilities.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Front music studio area w/ guitars, computer with protools, keyboard, microphone, pa system, and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a small keyboard and/or guitar

*** Specialties ***
My main musical styles that I perform and teach are Pop, Rock, Folk, and Americana/Country. I specialize in creating a lesson plan that suits the needs of each individual student.

Arrica is an excellent teacher and our lessons are always fun and enlightening. My wife and I are taking lessons in order to sing harmonies and duets better, and Arrica designed exercises for us to do just that. She is flexible with what we want to do while also offering structure to the lessons and goals.

Arrica is a wonderful singing coach! My nine-year-old daughter thoroughly enjoys their time together each week. Arrica always follows my daughter’s lead and gauges her interest in particular songs while also giving input and suggestions that further her progress and challenge her at just the right level. Her kind and patient demeanor has also helped my daughter, whom is somewhat shy, feel completely at ease. I can see through my daughter’s lesson with Arrica that she is very passionate and committed to her work. I would whole-heartedly recommend Arrica to anyone whom is looking for an amazing singing coach.

It's been more than a year of weekly lessons with Mack, and I could not be happier.

Mack is smart, quick, and knows how to handle kids to get results. There's no wheedling, bargaining or begging. It's just ok, do this, no, stop, do it again., No stop do it again, no stop do it again, and then good, that sounds good. I guess I should not be surprised, really, but my 13 yr old son cites this as what he likes best about Mack's instruction - it's all business.

Would I recommend Mack as a teacher for kid's music lessons? Yes, without reservation. Mack is an excellent teacher.

James worked with me in Youth Group leadership and mentoring. Completely responsible, very creative, and ready to try everything -- we used music, art, dance, theater, games, word puzzles, and anything else we could think of to develop the teaching material/learning outcomes that we were seeking. James brings a spirit of confidence and integrity to all he does. Certainly one of my favorite people to work on a project with and a true gift to a team or ensemble.

Carmen is top notch! She has been teaching our children for five years, and has been extraordinary all the way. It began when she personally delivered a used drum set to our home that she hand selected for us. Then it continues with her high energy and motivational techniques to make the lessons fun - yet challenging and exciting as well. Technology is engaged to maintain the experience at home.

Carmen's communication is second to none as well. We often work during the lessons and a sitter drives the kids to their lessons. Carmen makes sure to follow up with us (when needed) regarding lesson plans, areas to improve, and even readiness for future tasks. In a word - amazing!

We are so grateful to have Carmen as the person to foster in our children a lifelong love of music and an eagerness to learn about it. Thanks, Carmen!

Carmen has been teaching drums to my now 10-year old son for three years. Her patience, extensive repertoire of teaching methods always adapted to his learning style and progress, her contagious energy and her love of all things drums kept my son's motivation high and let him grow his abilities. I am very proud and impressed when he reads drums scores or figures out the beat of a song. Perhaps the two hardest parts for this young man were learning to play with the metronome and regularly practicing his rudiments. Carmen's many teacher's tricks, including books, posters, recordings, apps and well timed challenges with awesome awards have helped him stay on track.

Carmen keeps detailed notes about each of her students so her attention is always spot on and personalized. She makes herself available for any questions outside the classroom. A great person to be around and a talented musician, Carmen will find a way to make you into the drummer you dream to be.
