Shannon is an active musician, who has been featured as a soloist, and in the flute and woodwind sections with various orchestras, chamber ensembles, opera orchestras and musical theatre within the United States, Italy, and Mexico. Shannon has been a faculty member at various colleges, is currently Adjunct Professor of Music at Brazosport College, and also has an active private studio, Leigh Studios. She is the College Music Society South-Central Regional President; and is an Advisory Board member for the Houston Flute Club.
Shannon received her Masters of Music degree in Performance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She also studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and received her B.A. degree in Performance, and B.S. degree in Music-Business from Winona State University, and has studied with world-renowned instructors.
Shannon has received grants for her work, from the Minnesota State Arts Board, American Federation of Musicians, Rome Festival Orchestra, and the Winona Music Guild, and was the 1997 recipient of the Vivian Menees Nelson Music Award.
Shannon is also a sponsored triathlete and trainer/coach/race director, and gives workshops on the importance of healthy living, nutrition and exercise for musicians. She is a board member for The Lake Charles Triathletes. And she is a strong advocate for music, health, and triathlon. I am pretty easy going. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease, but we do need to focus and can have fun doing it. :)
I utilize various methods for each instrument, which is determined by the students learning style and ability; needs, so this can change as time goes on (not sticking to one particular publishers materials). I have done (and continue to do) extensive research into materials available for each instrument I teach, and supplement with my own, to utilize the best out there for "YOU" for the best possible progress. While ensuring an extremely well-rounded musical education, so you can progress at the best possible rate. Since each student's potential is different, each will progress differently. This is also determined by your dedication to daily practice (the more you practice, the quicker you will progress & the more accomplished you will become). This is a 'Team Effort'; I give the guidance and tools. You practice, utilize learn these tools, and off we go! The sky is the limit!

FITNESS: Shannon has been athletic most of her life. She is a Certified Personal Trainer, Specialist in Exercise Therapy, and running / multisport (swim/bike/run) coach for 15 years.
She is a sponsored athlete, and qualified for 2018 Aquathlon World Championships in Denmark, representing Team USA, and has placed in her age group at numerous events.

I teach all ranges and ages of students, to develop technique, sound, proper hand position, articulation, and musicality. It is my goal to help every student to ultimately find their own voice with their instrument.
For my Middle School and High School students, I find preparing them to audition for Southern California Honors Band (and potentially All-State Band) to be very rewarding and a great goal. Even if they choose not to audition or don't get in, great strides are made in their playing.
I specialize in everything from beginners in elementary or middle school through high school students, college audition preparation, and also teach undergraduate and graduate students.
I previously held teaching positions at the University of Southern California, Sinai Akiba Academy, and Young Musicians Foundation.

Lessons combine work on sound production, technical work, along with fun music (such as movie music) as well as repertoire and exercises to develop students musical skills. As a teacher I have worked with both 6 year-old and adult beginners, college music majors and graduate students, always tailoring how I teach for each student.
It is my goal that each student is able to play at least one simple tune by the end of the first lesson. Often, they can do much more!

I have been teaching Saxophone for quite a few years and I love it! My students have seen results from learning to lovey to practice, to competitive success in school events. When you first come you will start to think about music in a simpler way and will gain the confidence and understanding you need to play how you would like. Normally, I use The Rubank Method to develop a lot of technique in younger students. For those playing jazz, we do a lot of play alongs while focusing on specific concepts.
I find it most successful to prepare a lesson for each student before hand, rather than going over the same thing with every one of them. You can expect a well rounded range of exercises and practice techniques. From motif development, t

I have played the clarinet since 1995, and saxophone fingerings are almost the same! I played the saxophone throughout high school in jazz band, and I played it in college as well. For beginning saxophone players, I would use the "Essential Elements" book. There are many other finger exercise and technique books that I would use for more advanced players.

*I graduated from Kent State University (Kent, OH) in December, 2009, with my Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree (Magna cum Laude).
*I’ve taught music in small ensembles and marching band camps since July, 2007.
*I taught from 2010-2016 in the Texas Public Schools as a General Music teacher/Choir Director.

—If you're going to make a mistake, make a loud one!—
-My students know (I make sure of this) right off the bat that it's okay to make mistakes! My philosophy is: YOU make mistakes. Mistakes don't make YOU. We fix them together, and we learn together. Also: never apologize for making a mistake; that is why we’re working together and you’re practicing at home!
-I'm definitely a fun-loving, outgoing person.
-My teaching style is tailored to each of my students;
- I try to think-outside-the-box as much as possible and utilize creativity.
-I talk as little as possible in lessons; my goal is for the student to play as much as possible. With beginners, I may have to talk a bit more.
-I often model for the student what they should do: example: middle c position on the piano.
-If seeing ME isn’t enough for my visual learners, I will utilize a video clip.
-For my tactile learners, sometimes I have to move their fingers into position myself.
-For my sound learners, I will play or sing a pitch, show them the slide position or fingering to that note, and have them try to match it by ear.
-I also question my students.
-I have many other techniques as well.
-I am VERY much pro Positive Reinforcement!
*** Lesson details ***
-I am NOT a rigid teacher; I am pretty relaxed.
-However, I am VERY adamant about practicing between lessons - no matter what type of instrument you may be learning. It is the only way to improve. :)
-We will ALWAYS begin with a warm-up, we may/may not move into rhythm exercises, possible ear training, music theory, and your music.
-The list of all that I teach is on my page, but I teach all wind instruments (woodwind/brass), piano, and voice. I also teach acting techniques and improvisation skills.
-Daily practice is strongly recommended. It is important and necessary for steady progress.
-For piano lessons, students should have neat, clean, trimmed nails at every lesson.
-Students should bring water to voice lessons.
-Reed players should ensure they have working/non-cracked reeds.
-Brass players should ensure all valves/slides are oiled/greased.
-Students must be prepared for each lesson.
-Parents should remain until their child’s lesson is complete.
-Parents should regularly check and support the students practice routine.
*** Studio Equipment ***
-One Yamaha keyboard w/pedal; space for parents to sit and observe lessons.
-Square chairs to sit on

I have roughly 10 years of saxophone experience, focusing primarily on alto and tenor saxophone in a jazz setting. Although I am primarily a classical clarinetist, I love jazz and think improvisation is one of the most invaluable tools any musician can possess. I also teach classical saxophone at a beginner and intermediate level, focusing heavily on fundamentals and aural training.
As a performer, I have played in orchestras and chamber ensembles across the country and some in Europe. I am currently a member of the Lima Symphony in Ohio and Hartford Symphony in Conn
I have degrees in clarinet performance from the University of Michigan and Penn State, and my principal teachers include Chad Burrow, Dan Gilbert, and Dr. Anthony J. Costa. I have also completed additional studies with major symphony players such as Michael Rusinek, Joaquin Valdepenas, and Burt Hara.
As a teacher, I've maintained small private studios in the Ann Arbor, MI and State College, PA areas. I've also taught saxophone and clarinet in Aspen, Colorado with the P.A.L.S. program, as part of the Aspen Music Festival.
My goal as a teacher is to help cultivate an enriching and entertaining musical experience with the clarinet and/or saxophone. I hope to cater to the student’s goals as a performer (whether it be achieving perfect scores in solo competitions or simply learning to play a few easy jazz tunes), while offering a wealth of information along the way. Lessons will focus on fundamentals, musical literacy, aural skills, artistic creativity, improvisation, and composition. While I believe that structure in lessons is important for consistent development, I also believe that every student has different needs and interests, therefore each student receives individually-tailored lessons. The material I use is a culmination of both what I've used and personally developed, as well as materials my teachers have used and recommended in pedagogy classes I've taken.
It is my hope that I can help students obtain their goals while enjoying the wonderfully creative experience of learning an instrument and expressing themselves through the wonderful world of music.

During my senior year, I had an independent study with Mr. Caskin. He helped me grow, not only as a percussionist, but also as a piano player as well as a songwriter. As a student who has always had the passion of pursuing music as a career from a young age, Mr. Caskin went above and beyond what can be expected from a high school band teacher to not only mentor me, but he also guided me in the right direction. In fact, Mr. Caskin was one of the reasons I pursued music into my secondary education, as he was always very supportive of the idea, and helped me through the process.

I have 35 years of experience playing the saxophone. In high school I made the all-state jazz band. Since then, I have performed at a variety of venues and have worked in many studios.
As a beginner, you will learn the foundations of the saxophone which are vital to a good tone and control of the instrument. Intermediate and advanced students will continue to work on basics but will also focus on transcription, evenness through the registers, chord movements and substitutions, business matters, and more.
