Samara R.

Huntington Beach, CA

About Samara

Samara R is a contemporary classical music composer and educator based in Southern California. Textural elements, unusual instrumentation, extended performance techniques, and imagery inspiration combine themselves to form her compositional sound.

Samara is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. She graduated cum laude from the University of California, San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in music composition, and was selected to participate in the prestigious honors program, which culminated in a solo h
onors recital. She was awarded The Steward Prize for an outstanding creative work.

Samara studied music composition at UCSD with Dr. Lei Liang, Dr. Chinary Ung, Rand Steiger, and Dr. Philippe Manoury. She studied music composition, music theory, piano performance and pedagogy at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, CA under the tutelage of Dr. Norman Weston, Pamela Worcester and the late Dr. Rebecca Rollins.

At UCSD, Samara also had the opportunity to broaden her musical knowledge with courses complementary to composition. She studied recording, mixing, and mastering techniques in a state-of-the-art studio with Tom Erbe (SoundHack), completed a yearlong series of courses in jazz theory and improvisation with Kamau Kenyatta, took private violin lessons with Batya MacAdam-Somer, and even spent a quarter studying conducting with Dr. Chinary Ung.

Samara has sung and performed in numerous choirs throughout Southern California, including The Southern California Children’s Choir, Saddleback College’s Women’s Camerata and Modern Masterworks Choral, UCSD’s Concert Choir and Gospel Choir, and The La Jolla Symphony Chorus.

Samara currently runs a private music studio where she teaches piano, violin, voice, and composition lessons. In addition, she is a certified Music Together instructor for music and movement courses so she can introduce infants and toddlers to the joys of music.

Samara has participated in various music festivals including UCSD’s Toy Piano Festival organized and hosted by Scott Paulson, UCSD’s undergraduate arts festival ADDO, and The Grand Teton Music Festival.

She enjoys sharing her love of music through composing, teaching, and performing.

Samara is a member of The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), The Music Teachers’ National Association (MTNA), and The Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC).

Samara is great with our daughter. She recommends songs that our daughter likes and she asks my daughter to choose songs that she likes. She sings along with her when necessary to help her find the right notes and plays piano beautifully. Our daughter looks forward to the lessons with Samara.

As Samara's colleague at UCSD, I had the privilege of collaborating with her on various musical projects and observing her composition process from start to finish. She's a creative, talented and ambitious musician who is familiar with various musical instruments and techniques. More than that, she is a dedicated educator: she has extensive knowledge of musical pedagogy and is always looking for opportunities for further professional development. I highly recommend her for students of all levels!

Carl B.

Seal Beach, CA

About Carl

During your first lesson I do a computer analysis of your voice, I find out what your goals are in singing, what your favorite kinds of music are, and I take you in the direction you want to go and show you how to get there in the shortest possible time.

Think you're the only one who feels that terrifying nervousness? Most everyone does, including the biggest stars. One of the four books I've written is a book about it, entitled, "How To Conquer Nervousness For Singers", and I'll teach you to not only handle it, but to direct its energy into your singing, making your performance soar. I'
ve also written, "How To Get Standing Ovations For Singers" to teach you to drive your audience to their feet for a standing ovation.

I always record my students so that they know how they sound to others. I also make a CD of them singing to background music if they wish, included in the cost of the lessons for no extra charge.

Learn to sing beautifully, and most important, emotionally. Learn the parts of your vocal instrument, How each works, How they work together. Develop Breath support (80% of singing). Learn "The Singer's Formant", that "ringing" sound of professionals. Learn how to conquer nervousness, learn about Resonance, Overtones, Vibrato, How to sing high notes, Learn the "singing vowels", and more.

I would rather teach singing than eat chocolate, and if you knew how much I like chocolate, you'd know my passion for teaching singing. I've been studying voice since third grade, and teaching singing for eighteen years.

I've had nine singing teachers myself, so I know just how you feel. I get you comfortable, and I listen closely to what you want to do and where you want to go with your singing voice.

My students learn all the important aspects of singing right away, rather than drawing them out over time.

I teach beginner, intermediate, advanced, and professional students of all ages.

I teach all styles of singing, including pop, blues, gospel, classical voice, rock, jazz, SCAT singing, belting, country and western, and RAP.

I teach singing in English, Italian, Spanish, and German.

As my singing student you'll have access to the four books I've written on singing: SING BETTER FAST: a complete but concise treatise on vocal technique (It includes a Practice CD with a free recording studio program to install into your computer); How to conquer nervousness for singers, how to get standing ovations for singers, and sing better fast 2, advanced singing. These four books are the most current and relevant works on these subjects available today.

My Bachelor's and Master's Degrees are from California State University Dominguez Hills.

Put your singing voice in my hands. You'll love what happens.

*** Lesson Details ***
My introductory class includes a computer analysis of your singing voice, then describes the main parts of your vocal instrument, how each works, and how they work together. It teaches you what a song is, and how to sing a song well right away.

During the first lesson I record every student and play it back, both for computer analysis, and also so the student can hear how they sound to others. Remember the first time you heard yourself in a recording and said, "That's not me!" I'll explain that to you, and why it's so important to record yourself and listen to your recordings.

Your lessons are designed toward YOUR goals and desires in singing, and include specific guides for your between lessons practice sessions.

I also teach how to sing karaoke and impress an audience. I've been studying audience psychology for more than 15 years, and my entire orientation in teaching singing is to, "DRIVE YOUR AUDIENCE TO THEIR FEET FOR A STANDING OVATION!"

I record CD's with custom labels for students, with their picture, included in the price of the lessons. You can have a CD of yourself singing for you to to play, to give to your family and friends, or perhaps to sell.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are in my home studio, with recording equipment which we use to record you in lessons and on CD's, high quality studio monitor speakers that let you sound exactly the way you sound to others, high quality recording microphones, computer, control panel, keyboard, and music stands.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When I come to your location for lessons I bring portable equipment to do a computer analysis of the student's voice, and to record and play back my student's progress for analysis and discussion.

*** Specialties ***
I teach singing in English, Italian, Spanish, & German, in all styles, including Pop, Blues, Gospel, Classical, Rock, Jazz, Scat Singing, Belting, Country and Western, and Rap.

You will like Carl as your instructor. He is an expert at what he does, especially voice analysis with techniques to better any singing voice. He knows from A to Z what needs to be done to correct and improve, and this he imparts with specific instructions, coupled with lots of encouragement. He has generously worked with both my husband (a very good voice) and me (a bit of the ordinary) and we have always been satisfied with his professionalism and love of the art. Thanks, Carl.

Julio P.

Long Beach, CA

About Julio

My musical journey started when I was 10 years of age. I fell in love with the guitar and started taking lessons from a local academy. My first guitar teacher taught me a variety of musical styles and provided me with a solid foundation that would help me with the rest of my career. I continued taking lessons all the way through high school and then went on to study musical education in college.

Throughout my life I have played with many different bands, covering; alternative, Christian, rock, reggae, and pop. Currently, I compose and record my own music, lead a band, give guitar and keybo
ard lessons, and also work as an audio engineer.

Learning how to play guitar at an early age has helped me relate to all kinds of students and their abilities. I was there; I know how exciting it is to start learning the guitar and can guide you through all the necessary steps in order for you to learn and succeed.

*** Lesson Details ***
Every class I teach is individualized and personalized for each student. My program is really fun and effective. I will teach you music theory basics so that you can read music notation. But mainly I will focus on teaching you the songs that you like, form the artists and bands you admire. Bring a CD, MP3 player, or iPod to your lesson with your favorite song(s) and I will teach you how to play the songs that YOU love.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Finished Studio with guitars, keyboards, music stands, amps, and bass guitar. Seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide 2 amplifiers, 2 music stands, CD and MP3 player, and multiple guitars. I would expect for the student to provide his own instrument for daily practices at home.

*** Specialties ***
Rock, Alternative, Metal, Jazz, Classical, Pop, Reggae, and Flamenco.

I seek to meet each student at the level they find themselves at and to discern what works best in order to maximize their growth and potential. A firm grounding in basic technique, dynamics, and expression on the instrument is essential. Stick control and reading are two skills necessary to develop at the start. Books that I find invaluable in any student's development are "Stick Control" - George Lawrence Stone, "Modern Reading Text in 4/4" - Louis Bellson, "Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer" - Ted Reed, among others. Working through any music instruction texts/tutorials the student already has is also a priority.
