I teach piano in the same manner in which I teach every instrument. First I teach students the rudiments of the instrument. Also I teach them how to read and a bit of music theory. From that point I like to follow the students lead. They bring in songs that they would like to learn, or possibly how to play a certain style like Funk, or Blues, or how to approach a classical sonata. At every point I try to point out general aspects of music that need to be learned from the material that they choose.

The piano is a wonderful instrument with an incredibly versatile range of abilities. In piano lessons, I'll provide guidance on the key aspects of playing the piano: interpreting a piece of music accurately and with artistic expressiveness, improving technical ability, learning methods for efficient fingering and effective pedaling technique, developing greater control over emphasis, dynamics, and timing. If you are a beginner and aren't sure what all those things mean or if they would apply to you, that's fine too. I also offer introductory instruction on how to read music and get started playing the piano.
I offer instruction in many styles ranging from classical to jazz to rock to really almost anything. I also offer lessons in variety of musical topics: composition, songwriting, improvisation, ear training, music theory, arranging, and music production (technology). If you are interested, please check out the information on these other subjects by clicking on the link at the ...

I am now over 70 years young and have been taking piano lessons from Christopher Cohen for two years. He has excellent teaching skills and is just a wonderful teacher and person. He is patient with me (a slower learner) and encourages me to choose special pieces I want to include in my lessons.
Because of Christopher excellent teaching skills I am now enjoying the piano and eagerly looking forward to each session. Even my dog appreciates the piano and she never misses any of our lessons.
Thanks Christopher!"

Thank you for inspiring Defne, Sean!"

What are piano cadences, and how are they used? Learn the ins and outs in this guest post by Manassas, VA teacher Carol K... When I first decided to tackle the word “cadence,” I thought to myself – “What exactly do I think of when I hear that word?” For me, the word implies an ending, or rhythmic inflection of sound, like the modulation of the voice in reading or speaking. This article will examine, in greater detail, what a cadence means to musicians, the types of caden …

How do you make your melodies shine when you're learning the piano? Read on as Powell, OH teacher Sara Marie B. shares some exercises to try... As you're learning the piano, one of the most difficult things to do, especially for young children or beginning pianists, is to bring out the melody.
