I'm a professor of Spanish at Seattle University and North Seattle College. Languages are my hobby, passion, and profession--I speak seven languages. This often makes it easier for me to cater to my students because I understand the challenges of learning a language!
In 1990, at the age of 23, I moved to California and my Spanish obsession began. By the time I took my first course in Spanish I was nearly fluent — I ended up tutoring my classmates. I took various Spanish language and literature courses at Diablo Valley College (1991-1993) and the University of California, Berkeley (1993-1994). In 1994, I travelled to Mexico as a student and ended up working at the UC Berkeley exchange center, Centro de enseñanza para extranjeros at the Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). In 1995, I taught Spanish at a language school Instituto Angloamericano. In 2002, I began my MA in Hispanic Studies (Language and Literature) and teaching courses at the University of Washington. Upon completion, I started teaching Spanish at North Seattle College in 2005. At North Seattle College, I have taught regular academic, hybrid online and continuing education classes. Since 2016, I've been teaching Spanish courses at Seattle University. I've lived in Mexico and traveled extensively through Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Spain.
Here is a brief testimonial from one of my many students: "This class was amazing. Easily the best class I have ever had. Seva incorporated humor, visual illustrations and personal touches to his class, which allowed me to learn Spanish on a whole new level. I cannot tell you how nervous I was to take Spanish, as it was the only class I have ever failed in high school. Spanish is now my favorite class."
My latest passion is traveling the Camino de Santiago in Spain—I've made the trek twice and anticipate doing it again.
Whether learning Spanish is an academic requirement or your bucket project, I will make this process more enjoyable and productive. I look forward to helping you.

Seva is an excellent teacher. He adapts the lessons to the student's interests and end goal. The lessons are always fun, not just covering the language, but the culture as well. I would highly recommend online language lessons with Seva to my friends and family.Show More
It's fun taking language lessons with Seva, and you learn fast. He strikes the right balance between patience and pushing you, so that your progress is steady and stressless. Also, he is an expert in literature and culture which he constantly brings into the learning of the language. Instead of a lot of boring repetition, Seva emphasizes appreciation of history and culture, which is why I want to learn a foreign language in the first place.Show More
I've been taking Spanish lessons from Seva with a small group and it is one of the highlights of my week.--not only because of the instruction, but also because of the camaraderie and positive group dynamic Seva has established though humor and the taking of a personal interest in each member. In addition to his language instruction skills, he brings to the class extensive knowledge of literature, history and culture across many Spanish-speaking countries, which adds interest and richness to our conversations.Show More
First of all, Seva is a polyglot with an astounding store of academic knowledge, which gives him a perfect background to understand the needs of the individual student. This creates an aura of how glamorous the student can become learning another language. This assessment comes from a person who has studied Latin, Greek, English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and dabbled with Spanish. He makes you want to speak, to understand the people, the culture, and the history. He makes you want to learn without pressure/ lose the fear of not performing. His assignments are appropriate within that framework. In short, he is my “dream” teacher.Show More
There were several things I really appreciated about this class, one was the cultural information that was shared. I think the key to learning a new language, is learning how they use the language, how they culturally express themselves, and how it's different from what we currently know in our language, and Seva did a really good job at integrating this into the lessons. I also really appreciated all the extra tools he have us to learn outside of our classroom. I also never felt super uncomfortable if I didn't know the answer, as in my pass language classes with different teachers, the guilt was unreal if I didn't know an answer and I think this took away from the learning experience. I would definitely recommend Seva’s class to others, and look forward to taking his class again in the future.Show More
Seva thoroughly enjoys helping others discover new ways to communicate. He makes language acquisition a playful experience, while bringing a deep understanding and many years of experience to bear. His instruction is always fresh and exciting.
Seva is one of the most talented teachers i have ever encountered. I have a college degree, a master's degree, and. a law degree so I've had a lot of teachers! He made learning Spanish fun, interesting, and intellectually challenging. He recognized that different students had different learning styles and offered options to meet each style. The base of knowledge he provided me made my progress in learning Spanish much easier. If you have a chance to learn from him, don't miss it!Show More
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Spanish class, mostly due to our instructor, Seva. Several years ago a group of us students were seeking a Spanish teacher to provide advanced Spanish instruction. Since I'd had a wonderful Nicaraguan professor in the past, finding just the right person to meet up to her qualifications and standards was going to be a tough assignment; however, through a former student, our small group reached out to Seva & after one class with Seva, we all agreed he was the teacher we were seeking!
I am constantly amazed at Seva's knowledge (in general) and command of Spanish (more specifically). He makes our classes interesting, fun, lively, and educational at the same time. We read, we write, we review, we chat. Seva actively listens, guides the class, and provides feedback & input in a way that encourages learning and makes it entertaining at the same time, to keep our interest.
It has been over the course of several years (about 9 months of the year) our small, advanced Spanish group has continued to study Spanish. It would be a great challenge to find another professor with his knowledge, dedication, and commitment who could replace him. I am always learning!
Without any hesitation, regardless of your level, if you are serious about learning a new language, choose Seva to be your language professor!
Seva is an exceptional Spanish language teacher because he has the rare ability to understand each student's unique strengths and weaknesses, but also has great knowledge of grammar, written and spoken Spanish, and literature. He is patient and encouraging with a good sense of humor, so my confidence and skill has continually grown since I started studying with him.Show More
Learning with Seva was like dropping into a Spanish speaking neighborhood for an afternoon cup of coffee with friends. Splendid!
I studied Spanish with Seva for 6 months. During that time, I went from have challenges being able to speak or read to being able to read long paragraphs in textbooks and in simple pieces of literature. Also, I learned how to give commands, ask questions, and have very simple conversations. I appreciated that Seva was sensitive to the fact that I had studied French before and was able to build on that knowledge to help me learn faster. He's a great, patient teacher, and I'd gladly study with him again.Show More
