Overview

I am a potter who specializes in functional tableware. I teach in my studio and also at local art centers. I teach throwing on the potter's wheel and hand-building. My work has been exhibited in national juried shows.

I also am a textile artisan. My love is doll-making, in the Waldorf style. I teach knitting (Continental style), crochet, and sewing.

My other love is gardening. I grow tree and herbaceous peonies. My cottage style garden is planted for fragrance and naturalness. I emphasize growing perennials because their beauty increases each year.

I have had nothing but the best experience working with Marlisa. She is patient, she takes the time to verify that you've grasped a concept you're struggling with and works to find the best way to communicate with YOU. I don't think anyone would regret spending an hour or two learning and chatting with Marlisa. I feel so inspired and more confident each time I leave a session. If you're on the fence about trying this; don't hesitate!

Marlisa is a very kind, patient and knowledgeable teacher. I took my granddaughter to her for a pottery lesson and she was very happy with Marlisa's teaching, resulting in her being able to throw a bowl on the wheel that she can actually use. I would highly recommend Marlisa as a teacher for students of all ages!

Marlisa is an awesome teacher. I took a pottery class at Glen Echo years ago and was very disappointed, but with Marlisa's excellent teaching skills and enthusiasm for the art, I left her studio feeling like I wanted to buy a wheel and start throwing. I appreciate her hands-on approach and always felt taken care of attended to. Marlisa is a true artist and excellent teacher!!! I highly recommend her.

Marlisa is an excellent teacher! She was patient and kind and very helpful! I went to her house for a pottery lesson a few days ago, and I was very apprehensive going into it, because I tried pottery a few years ago and had a less than satisfactory experience. However, I'm so glad that I did this lesson anyway, because I had so much fun! Marlisa is an excellent and patient teacher, and she first shows you exactly what you need to do, and then helps you with every step as you do it yourself. She gives you the chance to practice, but really knows what she's doing so she can help you correct your mistakes, also. I live in California, but if I lived in the DC area, Marlisa would definitely be my #1 choice for a ceramics teacher!

My lesson both met my needs and also some of my highest hopes for it. My goal was to have an in home lesson to get me and my daughters started on our new sewing machine. I was a bit nervous choosing an instructor to invite into my home, especially based on just an online profile and without the security of a known sewing organization (not even sure sewing lesson organizations exist- I couldn't find one!). I felt pretty secure going through Take Lessons as it provided a type of screening process. But I was also happy that I pushed a bit by directly contacting (via the Take Lessons email feature) an instructor listed as outside my geographic radius. It turns out she was not too far and willing to travel to us so Take Lessons arranged it.

Marlisa was a great match for us due to her interest in Waldorf and working with children. She brought samples of her handmade dolls to inspire us and easily set up my machine and got me comfortable with the basics. She explained clearly and made sure I tried everything so I would remember.

We didn't do any projects yet but it was a worthwhile investment to get us comfortable with the machine. I can't say how wonderful it was to have her come to my own home and work with us in such a relaxed fashion making it possible to learn this new skill in this hectic world without dragging everyone to another "lesson". Next week I will ask her to focus on teaching my 8 year old. Thanks Take Lessons for this helpful service! Marlisa is great!

I had a wonderful experience with Marlisa! She communicated very clearly and reliably before my lesson to answer my questions and make sure that I was able to do everything I wanted during my lesson. She was helpful and patient during the lesson, giving wonderful demonstrations and talking me through the process. I didn't think I would be able to produce anything good right away on the wheel, but with her help I made a nice cup, which she offered to fire and glaze for me. She really went above and beyond with her lesson and I highly recommend her!

Marlisa is a wonderful instructor. My class has people of all skill levels, and I have been very impressed in how she has handled working with them all. She is very hands on with the students new to wheel throwing, and has had a great impact on their ability to quickly learn the basics (and learn how much fun it is). I have had some previous experience, but still have a lot to learn, and she also has been focused on determining what my needs are, and helping me reach my goals to improve. She also is a great potter, and it's fun and a revelation to see her own work. She's a great teacher, and it's been fun having her in the classroom.
