What is your name? Do you work? Which family members live with you? What do you like to do? Often, recent immigrants are puzzled even by simple questions. They become afraid to engage with Americans, and may retreat to the safety of their ethnic group and never learn English. I will teach you to listen better and understand more. You will learn simple words and sentences to make yourself understood. We will test how you are doing by doling some everyday things you need to do: shopping, asking for help, getting directions. I may not speak more than a few words of your language. That is an advantage because it simulates what you encounter everyday. You will gain confidence in just a few days. I have seen it happen with several friends I have coached.
