Drawing lessons with an expert artist with a BFA in Animation

Have you always been interested in making art, but have been too intimidated or overwhelmed to try? Or maybe you’ve been making art for years, but are itching to take your work to the next level. Are you looking to strengthen your portfolio, perhaps for college or an artistic career? Regardless of what level you’re at, I’m ready to collaborate with you and create a lesson plan tailored to your (or your child’s) unique goals. Anyone can learn how to draw! It only takes practice, dedication, and patience. In our lessons, we will strengthen your understanding of technical aspects like line, movement, value, composition, texture, weight, and shape language, by drawing from observation (both from life/in person and photo/video reference). Those that like drawing in a more stylized way (more cartoony than realistic) will learn how to apply their observational studies to their stylized work. Remember, even cartoons are based off of real life! Supplies will depend on your own artistic goals and preferences, but all you really need is a pencil and paper.

***Not currently accepting new students*** I’m an animator and multidisciplinary artist who has been drawing for as long as I can remember. I graduated from MassArt with a BFA in Animation, but I also enjoy painting, illustration, sculpture, and photography. In addition to visual art, I like to dance and write poetry. During my time as a teaching assistant at MassArt, I quickly learned that I love teaching art. My favorite part of teaching is seeing my students improve, grow, and develop their own voice. I have years of experience working with various mediums: digital (Adobe Suite and Procreate), graphite, charcoal, oils, acrylic, watercolor, and ink. I'm experienced with storyboarding, character/creature design, environments, fantasy art, portraits, and drawing animals, just to name a few. I specialize in storytelling and building a strong foundation based on observation. Whether you want to learn how to paint realistic portraits or design fantastical video game characters, I can help guide you on that journey. Tell me what inspires you, and we'll learn how to channel that passion into your own work!

Jessi has been excellent for my 13 year old daughter, and they have been working together weekly for nearly a year now. Focus has been on drawing people. My daughter has improved 10 fold and really connects with Jessi and her style of teaching. Jessi gives homework and goals for the upcoming week to keep everyone on track. Online instruction has worked well and Jessi is able to demonstrate on screen the "how to" and can also draw on top of my daughters drawing to demonstrate "the fix". Jessi is dedicated to your students progress and success!

Jessi has been a tremendous help for my Design II class. They taught me all the proper techniques and was very patient with me and my extremely minimal amount of skill. Thanks to them I managed to get a much better grade than I usually would in these types of media classes (i'm so so so bad at technology) and I feel more autonomous when it comes to designing my own posters for shows.
