I teach what you want to learn. Lessons may include: Basic or advanced techniques. Mixing vibrant hues. Wet-on-wet. Dry brush. Masking. Glazing. Dew drops on flowers. Textures--using salt, layering, sponges, scratching, lifting, etc. Considering your light source. Loosening up. Managing the water to pigment ratio. Paper selection. Setting up your palette. What paints to use. And brushes: how many, what kind and brand? Painting outdoors in the open air, or from photographs, or from a still life. Using your phone to help you critique your painting. All levels--from beginner to advanced. Demonstrations on creating watercolors in the style of famous watercolorists like John Singer Sargent, or Winslow Homer. Subject matter can include journaling, watercolor sketching, landscapes, seascapes, florals, abstracts, still life, urban settings, color grids, and more. Additionally, you can schedule a lesson and let me know that you want to use it as a critique to review some of your work. I recommend the 45 minute session for a critique.
About Jane M.

I LOVE teaching. I'm an award-winning artist and I've taught watercolor for 25+ years. I've taught students of all ages from the US & Italy. I've taught at Cleveland Botanical Garden, Missouri Botanical Garden, Illinois Central College, in churches, libraries, home schools, & at Harvard University Extension School, Cambridge, MA. We will paint what appeals to YOU...from oceans to flowers to abstracts to landscapes to seascapes, etc. Or we can focus on one technique that interests you. Or, cover "the basics." Some of my students are now professional artists & some have become art teachers. The materials can be simple. For watercolor painting, we'll use a couple of good quality brushes, about 6 paint colors, watercolor paper, water and a palette. Ta-Da! You’re ready to go. (I provide a detailed supply list for enrolled students.)

Jane is a wonderful teacher. She's funny, patient, kind, and supportive. She is very skilled at giving feedback that is developmentally appropriate and helpful. She's also an accomplished artist with a rich knowledge of art history, which she incorporates into her lessons when appropriate, and which I personally enjoy greatly.

Creating videos on "how to watercolor." Creating step-by-step online free lessons while I create a painting. Our film crew traveled with me to California, Minnesota, Missouri and more to film several segments of our series. So many unexpected things happen while I'm painting. From wind, and bees, to dogs, and quick changes of weather. Being an artist requires thinking on your feet. :)

An online gallery featuring my artwork, including photographs, drawings, paintings and multimedia work. My work is always evolving so there is always something new. I am inspired by the world to create beautiful interpretations of the complexity around us.

Blog at Art in the Center (of Everyone's life)
We think everyone would benefit from more art in their life. Art gives people a voice. It allows us to flow to a contemplative space to unwind, recharge, and to be attentive with the intuitive, "free-styling" part of our thinking. art allows us to bridge differences; to understand other cultures and ways of mental processing. Individual blog posts take on various forms of art from music to silhouette cutting to watercolor and drawing. Sometimes we consider materials and techniques. In one way or another it all circles back to teaching about art -- our core mission.

We offer educational resources, including a one-of-a-kind library, conferences, public lectures, and student programs. Our national awards spotlight emerging artists and honor masters. And we promote the handmade through our resource-rich website and award-winning magazine, American Craft.
Ohio Plein Air Society
Apr 2016
The Ohio Plein Air Society is a collection of artists and art lovers sharing a common interest in outdoor painting. While we recognize that all art is important, as a group we focus on painting, drawing, and other art forms completed on site, from direct observation, and outdoors. Our admiration for the world around us gives us reason to explore through art the diversity and uniqueness of Ohio’s landscapes, cityscapes, lakes, rivers, and streams, and beyond. As a non-profit organization, OPAS welcomes and supports artists, patrons, educators, and enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels, backgrounds and interests.
