    About David L.

Hi! I'm David and I am an undergraduate student at Brown University studying computational biology. I have a passion for education, especially for students currently going through high school because I wish I had more guidance myself during the whole college application/test taking season. Because of this, whether we be doing test prep or essay writing or class tutoring, I am more than happy to offer advice and work with the student for applying to colleges. I teach SAT/AP test preparation as well as college essay and application help. Although I received a perfect score on the SAT, it was not on my first try and it took a lot of hard work for me to get there. There definitely are a few tips and tricks that can help the student when preparing for these exams, but the reality is that achieving a high score is not possible without dedication and commitment. However, I believe as a teacher I can eventually get the student to a point where I am not needed anymore and they have built the tools in order to succeed independently. I understand where the student comes from when they are struggling or frustrated because I was once in that place myself, and I know I will be able to help them get to where they need to be.

    Experience

    IgniteCS

In this program, we set up an after school club that elementary and middle school kids from underprivileged areas could come to and learn about what computer science is and get their first exposure to programming. A lot of these kids do not have much access to technology or technology education either at school or at home, so it was really great to help them build a repertoire of tools that are essential in almost all fields now.

    Korean Adoptee Mentoring Program

I am a mentor for the Korean Adoptee Mentoring Program at Brown, which is a place where Korean adoptee children and their families come from all over the Greater Boston area and we spend a few hours playing with them and giving them exposure to Korean culture. This experience is especially fulfilling for me because a lot of these kids come from very homogenous, suburban areas and don’t have any way of connecting to their heritage back at home. I love the fact that I can tangibly make an impact in these kids’ lives, which I think is my goal for pursuing education.
