All that I request from a student is a desire to learn. I will work with you at your pace to achieve the musical goals you have. Each student begins at a different level.

The first lesson will focus on your musical background. If you are a beginner, that's no problem. I specialize in working with beginning students to teach them all the joy and satisfaction there is in mastering an instrument.

I love to laugh and the lessons are very laid back and fun, but I desire that a student move forward and learn new techniques.

You will be playing simple songs after your first lesson. I'm asked many times by students "how long will it take until I'm good." My answer is: that is in direct proportion to the amount of time you dedicate to practicing. After a month or two, you will know how to read music and have a basic understanding of music theory.

I use various curriculum depending on the student's need. For piano, I generally use Alfred Methods.

About Don
Don brings over 36 years of teaching experience in Piano, Voice, and Guitar. His relaxed and humorous approach to music encourages students to embrace a love for the musical art.

With 2 American Idol finalists to his credit, along with numerous students who have gone on to professional careers in theater, television, and film. He also has 16 years experience as Musical Director for over 45 theatrical productions in Southern California, Oregon, and Washington.

He has received an award in Southern California for Outstanding Musical Direction in a theatrical production of "The King and I." He is currently the vocal coach for Magenta Theater and Musical Director for Metropolitan Performing Arts Academy, both in Vancouver, WA.

He has traveled the US with The Continental Singers, an international singing group, been a choral director
in churches and various performing groups. He has worked as a recording studio engineer, live sound engineer, and theater sound designer.

Don strives to bring out the best in each student. Whether a beginner, intermediate, or advanced student, Don will expand your musical horizon and styles to new levels.

Being a Senior, I felt that a person who was close to my age would be better for me. I feel now that we would have gotten along even if I was 10 years old. Don brought me to a comfortable level from the outset with his style and knowledge.

Tyler is an excellent teacher who made learning music fun for my kids. I have twin boys and one of them took drum lessons from Tyler and the other took piano. Both boys loved taking lessons with Tyler and looked forward to the lesson each week. Tyler was very professional in his communication and was super easy to work with. I would highly recommend Tyler.

I provide every student with different pieces according to his/her age and individual abilities. Each student has a different learning speed and level of enthusiasm which needs to be taken into account. With young children I find it helpful to integrate games, stories and pictures to enliven the lesson. I try not to be too strict, but I expect my students to practice at home and not to miss lessons. I use a number of books and methods. After 3 to 6 months a young student will have learned at least 12 notes on the staff, to sight-read easy pieces, to understand count rhythm values, and to play simple songs .

Both of my daughters take lessons from Sonya. Previously we were at an academy in Cedar Mill and much of the love of music was being lost in an overly structured environment. Now that my girls are with Sonya, they are playing the piano for fun again and their confidence is building. Sonya is a fantastic teacher that keeps it light with the kids and has a natural ability to encourage and make people feel comfortable so they can perform to their greatest potential.

Omg!!! She is a great teacher, I have been learning piano with her for 5 years, and she is the nicest teacher ever. She gives feedback, for what she liked, and what you can improve on. She has made me learn that with lots of time great things can happen, and to shoot for the stars. Everyday she will ask "How are you" and I would say what happened in school like she was my mom, and she would nod patiently. I Think she is the best teacher ever. If you are looking for a Piano teacher she should certainly be one of the options. THANKYOU SONYA!!!!

I tailor each learning experience to fit the student, finding the styles and pieces that turn apathy into interest, without forsaking a solid musical foundation. I also incorporate the importance of awareness of one’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing at the piano during lessons. I believe that it is essential for students to know how to play in a way that promotes free movement, preventing short-term and long-term injury.

About Andrea
Andrea’s passion for teaching is evident in her care for the individual student. She realizes the importance of allowing her students to manifest their own creativity, and she takes pleasure in witnessing the blossoming of music within their souls. Her reward is seeing students enjoy the process of learning and discover their own passion in music. Andrea enjoys the challenge of turning reluctant students into passionate ones. I believe music is something to be enjoyed. I seek to tailor my lessons to the interests of the students, depending on the age of the student. I assign exercises designed to create familiarity with common movements on the piano so that each student can work toward freedom of expression on the instrument. I also work with music that students want to learn from and teach theory and ear training in those particular pieces.

About Nicolaus
I have been around the piano all of my life. My mom is an elementary music teacher and my dad has been a professional organist for most of his life. I studied Classical piano at Bethany University in Scotts Valley, CA and received my Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. I have also studied Jazz piano at the University of Nevada Reno for a year at a Master's level. I spent the last 3 years before moving to Portland working professionally as the Music Director for a church in Nevada and have experience touring and playing all over California/Nevada. I have tutored people in piano and in music theory before as well. I am an actively gigging musician and play regularly.

Piano can be fun and easy if we start off right! I like to teach my students WHY we play the way we play. I use music theory to help them understand what they're doing when playing the piano: tapping the keys with your fingers, tapping the rhythm with your head and feet, reading the sheet music with your eyes and brain, hearing the beautiful song you're playing... If we approach the subject from all sides, we can accomplish most any songs you set your mind to!

About Livi
Hey all! I'm Livi, a ukulele playing singer, songwriter, and music teacher living in beautiful Portland, OR. Learn more about me in my bio below, and hopefully meet you in person/online soon! XxoO, -Liv

Livi began taking piano lessons at a young age, and found her love for music watching a stage production of "The Sound Of Music" in Hong Kong where she grew up. After receiving her BA for Film & TV, with a concentration in Audio and Composition from SMU in Dallas, TX. This summer, she will be perusing a performance certificate at Berklee School of Music - Valencia, Spain campus.

Livi moved to California and began teaching music and film making, along with writing and performing all over Los Angeles. After falling in love with the Pacific Northwest at a friends wedding on the Willamette River, Livi moved to Portland and continued teach
ing private voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, violin, and cello lessons as well as group classes such as Kindermusik, Drama, Glee, Rock band, and Songwriting at several music schools in Portland and Vancouver, WA.
