Beginning piano lessons taught to kids ages 5 and up, and adults studying music for the first time. 90 min option added for multiple students going back-to-back.

About Erin
I have a Master's in Vocal Performance from Portland State University, and over a decade of vocal training and performance experience.

I teach voice lessons to kids, teenagers, and adults, ranging in ability from beginner to experienced. I have helped the beginning students learn to match pitch and read notes on the staff. My voice students learn to sing with purer vowels, increased breath support, and to access greater vocal range.

I teach beginning piano to all ages. I teach students as young as 5 as long as they are able to stay focused for the duration of a half hour lesson. Most of my piano students are in the 7 -10 range, but I teach some beginning adults as well.

I travel to some students in N and NE Portland, but I vastly prefer to have students come to me. For students in Vancouver, WA, I do ask that they come to me.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice students will learn to improve their technique through proper breathing, correct vowels, space, and resonance. I teach repertoire based on the students' interest, but I am well versed in classical and operatic repertoire in English, French, German, and Italian, as well as some musical theatre and jazz. I also teach pop songs for those who are interested. I can help you improve your technique for whatever style of music you want to sing. For adults, I recommend an hour voice lesson. For kids, I recommend a half hour voice lesson, and half hour of piano if they are not already taking it.

Piano students will learn to read music, play with correct form, learn scales, and improve their musicianship skills. I teach out of lesson books (mostly Faber) to improve technique, but I want students to learn supplemental pieces that are fun for them as well. For piano beginners, I recommend 30 minutes. Once the student is a little more experienced, I like to have them for 45 minutes.

I hope to share with you the same joy I get from making music!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio at home has a piano, my music library, a large mirror for aiding the student in observing their vocal habits.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For in home lessons, students will need to have a keyboard or a piano in a space free of distractions. Students should have a neat, three ring binder to hold any loose sheet music. Piano students need a regular notebook to write lesson assignments.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical art songs and musical theatre.

My primary goal as a teacher is to present musical material in a way that keeps students excited about what they are learning. Even with absolute beginners, I will have a student playing actual songs that they are interested in as quickly as possible. Along with way I include fundamentals such as scales, strength-building exercises, rudiments of theory, and ear training. Some of the method books I use include the Alfred and Faber and Faber series, and Hanon's The Virtuoso Pianist, among many others. These materials are always supplemented with arrangements and transcriptions of popular songs and classical pieces, along with original exercises designed to teach specific styles and techniques. I also use interactive music websites to introduce students to concepts of music theory. The styles that I cover include classical, rock, jazz, and blues. As students progress in their creativity, I also introduce them to composition and improvisation.

About Chuck
Chuck moved to Portland, Oregon from Gainesville, Florida, where he was a prominent member of the music teaching and performing community for more than 25 years. Originally from Chicago, Chuck completed his BA in Music History and Masters of Music (MM) at the University of Florida. Chuck became obsessed with The Beatles when he began piano lessons at age 12. His first attempt at composing was actually improvising melodies over the ending chords to "Hey Jude". Along with playing Beatles tunes Chuck learned classic standards from a set of Reader's Digest Songbooks inherited from his grandmother.

Chuck has performed with classic rock, top 40, funk, R&B, and jazz groups, and has served as an opening act for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and legendary Texas bluesman Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. As a soloist he's played classical musi
c, blues, jazz, and original compositions. Before devoting himself to music full time, he worked for 8 years as a radio announcer on WUFT-FM Gainesville hosting shows such as "Nothing but the Blues", "Montage" (acoustic jazz), and "Musica Antiqua" (Renaissance and Medieval).

Chuck has taught students of all ages and skill levels in piano, guitar, organ, flute, digital keyboards, recorder, and ukulele. He's also a multi-faceted composer whose instrumental pieces are infused with elements of classical, blues, and jazz styles.

Chuck's teaching philosophy: "In my 25 years of teaching I’ve found that everyone learns in different ways and at different rates of progress, so each of my students is treated as a unique individual. I try to get to know my students in the first few lessons so I can be more sensitive to their personalities. This helps me choose the best teaching approach for them. From the very first lesson I create a relaxed setting so students feel no apprehension, especially when trying something new. This allows them to feel free to take chances and experience playing music as something enjoyable, not a life or death situation! The biggest measure of my effectiveness as a teacher is when my students embrace new challenges and the opportunity to improve".

I am really impressed with Chuck's ability to get right to the things I want to learn while still explaining the fundamentals. I'm a self-taught guitar player (30 years) but I came to Chuck with no reading skills and no piano experience at all. He has been able to take what I know and show me how to apply it to learning theory, but within 3 lessons he also has me really excited about playing actual music that I'm into. Great learning studio and professional yet laid-back demeanor. Definitely plan on sticking with Chuck.

I teach using a combination of your books and Hal Leonard method books depending on your level. I specialize in playing ergonomically and musically so that you can enjoy making music!

About Julia
I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece. Premiering new music is a specialty. I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions.  My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.

Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we find the joy of singing while building a solid technique.

I have worked with small children as a Musikgarten teacher and have toured artist residency
programs which introduce children to music and theater in schools.   I was adjunct faculty at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and local music studios as well as maintaining my private teaching practice.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am persistent and positive! Working and performing with singers and master teachers has helped me to be a resourceful teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly.  For beginners you will learn how the voice works and how to care for and develop your instrument, I recommend adults take 45" - 1 hour lessons weekly for skill building. We will choose music that interests you and helps to build your voice starting with basics before moving to more complex and challenging music. Understanding music theory and sight-reading will help you get the most out of your singing. After 3 - 6 months you should have a good command of breathing and an understanding of how to sing with an expressive tone. For the advanced student, I can help you work on trouble spots and give you tools to help with the changes that voices naturally go through.  I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Condo w/ open area with piano. Visitor's parking lot w/ seating in studio for parents to listen. Parents with younger siblings can use play areas outside.
Basic library of vocal music, giving the student a way to sample different kinds of songs before purchasing books or downloading songs on their own. Music stand, iPhone plug-in/Amp for accompaniments and examples you want me to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a basic library of vocal music at my home studio and will bring targeted books with me. Students should print out their favorite popular songs from such services as Music Notes website.
I expect my students to provide a keyboard, music stand and notebook as well as a low distraction environment.

*** Specialties ***
As an opera and musical theater, Oratorio and church singer, I help singers of all levels improve within their genre from popular music to opera. A good singing technique will help performers in any style stay healthy and enjoy an expressive singing instrument.

How to read music, how to play scales, technique, theory as well as how to play chords and learning pieces and songs that the student chooses.

About Todd
Hello! My name is Todd. I've been playing music for most of my life. My first instrument was a Casio keyboard when I was about ten years old but I moved over to guitar as a teenager and fell in love with it. I recently graduated from Webster University with a BA in music after receiving an AA in guitar performance at SWIC. In college, I learned everything from music theory to conducting as well as playing in the guitar ensemble, jazz ensemble and so on. After music school, I went through a computer coding program at LaunchCode where I learned python and java and built my own application for booking bands. Over the years I have played in a handful of bands in the St. Louis music scene but in January I moved to Portland, OR and am hoping to meet some friendly people here. I look forward to hearing from you.

I teach beginner to intermediate piano for ages 5 and up.

The techniques I teach are techniques I have learned through classical training. Classical technique is the healthiest and most efficient technique used in playing piano, and it can be applied to all styles of playing.

Students will learn...
- to play with ease, precision, elegance, emotion, and freedom
- music theory
- sight-reading
- memorization techniques
- effective practice methods to achieve great improvements in technique
- how to practice with intention; in other words, focusing on the quality and consistency of practice rather than the length of practice

Learning piano is a worthwhile journey that requires dedication and commitment. I hope to be your guide in this journey!

Thank you

About Gayaneh
I've been a classical pianist since I was 6. Music is my true passion, and I am eager to teach beginner or intermediate students. Piano is an amazing instrument to know, whether you play classical or contemporary. The techniques I teach will be from my classical training, and they can be used in all genres.

Learning an instrument or improving your musical skills is so much fun, but it can be frustrating at times. I want to guide students and make practicing something to look forward to every single day!

Need a strong foundation of the basics of piano to learn to play those songs you love? Beginner lessons for all ages available in a comfortable and judgement free atmosphere. Learn the fundamentals of music theory, note reading, technique and more with a fresh and personal approach with every lesson.

About Merci
I was taught piano at the young age of 7 and have been continuously studying over the years. With pastors for parents, I grew up playing in church and various events in Okinawa, Japan. After graduating I moved to America and started teaching beginner piano lessons at a local piano store as a side job.

My experience working with and teaching children of all ages has strengthened my ability to explain lessons on music theory, technique, and musicality in a clear and concise way. Many of my former students were able to make weekly improvements free of confusion and frustration. I have a very laid back personality and find it very fulfilling connecting with my students as I pass on my knowledge and love for music. For a couple years I was self taught, that is when I learned pop and contemporary piano. There are many forms and styles of piano
playing, my goal is to help you find what you like best and to help you improve.

I am currently a piano teacher full time, so I am available almost any time! My lessons are taught from a comfortable condo in Charbonneau. If you find me a good fit as your teacher send me a message!
