Viola Lessons for Portland, OR

Hello! I am offering beginning to advanced lessons for students of all ages (age 3 through adult). The methodology that I teach is directly from Oberlin and New England Conservatories. My teaching philosophy is to self motivate students through fun and a positive learning environment. I have over 10 years of teaching experience and have taught in a variety of settings across the US and Taiwan.

I teach beginning through college level viola, and have studied viola at Indiana University during my doctoral program.

I'm an experienced and dedicated musician, having played with Orchestras and Chamber groups throughout my state. My lessons are focused on relaxation, and am as laid back or strict as the student needs. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, shooting to be a church player or a pro, I have taught students for that and am the teacher for you.

Expert advice on tone production, theory, technique, and musicality

When I teach, I strive to help students learn the most efficient practice methods and to develop a healthy attitude towards learning music. Your progression on the instrument is what will take you to the next step. Either playing solo and chamber and orchestra have the same core values: beautiful tone production, fine intonation, pure rhythm, expressive playing, knowledge of musical styles, acute listening, excellent ensemble skills. If you study with me, I will help you master these concepts and techniques at your own pace and help you find your own musical voice through playing the viola/piano. I look forward to working with each of you :)

I've been teaching viola for 3 years and my students have felt more prepared in their community and school orchestras. As students progress they will better understand scales, bow technique, and musical phrasing. I specialize in beginning technique, typically use Essential Elements books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: personalized exercise packets, a keyboard, and scores. Something different about me is that I offer students methods to begin composition. Adult students are welcom! Recorded lessons are available. Parents are welcome to sit in! Cancelation Policy: A missed lesson without notification will be charged as the full amount. Please let me know 24 hours in advance if you or your student will not be able to attend a lesson (For emergencies, just let me known as soon as you can.)
