I'm a specialist in Brazilian Guitar and have played and used American Folk Styles to teach finger picking for many years. This includes Travis Picking, Blues and arrangement of all sorts of melodies for guitar. One of the first world musics I played was Irish music and I have a nice repertoire of these melodies to help the student learn how to play a linear melody. Reading is not necessary but I'm expert at getting people to read by using simple familiar music. I have been playing Jazz acoustically fingerstyle for a while and have been a good understanding of Swing guitar styles too. Repertoire and recordings are essential in the process. This I also provide to the student

I was a beginner wanting to learn some Brazilian guitar: samba, bossa nova, etc. Billy was great for that as a very accomplished guitarist of that genre. He is very engaging and enthusiastic. He was patient with me in working on the difficult chords and strumming that this type of music requires. Having literally, "written the book", he had an organized approach. I also enjoyed his humor and occasional stories about guitarist he has know. Acho que ele tem Jeito para ensinar violao.

If you are seeking to develop the skills necessary to become a competent guitarist that can find comfortability playing in any genre, you have come to the right place! I am a touring rock and metal musician and have been playing guitar and drums professionally for 14+ years, with 4 LPs under my belt along with numerous singles, splits and EPs. In my lessons, we will explore various techniques and topics ranging from basic music theory topics like the circle of fifths to advanced techniques such as sweep picking and tapping. I emphasize not only understanding the skills one needs to play their favorite riffs but developing an ear for relative pitch, songwriting and the tone one desires to achieve what they are hearing in their head. My genre specializations are in rock and heavy metal. All skill levels are welcome!

About Nicholas

Hey there! My name is Nick Z. and I am a gigging guitarist, drummer, and songwriter in various rock and metal bands. As a guitarist of 14 years and drummer of 12 years, I have recorded numerous albums, singles, and splits of my own original music and music written collaboratively with band members.

I have taught guitar since 2012 and have been playing since 2000. I am happy to take students at the beginner and intermediate levels. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- notice i say theory, not rules. learning music theory is not about learning rigid rules that will stifle your creativity. when you learn theory, you learn to identify patterns and give them names so you can remember and reuse them. the more you know your theory, the more ways you know to express your ideas
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally. and really, why would you not want to be the best you can be?

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as well

My classes are very flexible when it comes to what the student wants. On the first class, I give the student the choice of controlling our lessons materials about what they want to learn. Or the student can choose to let me control our classes, in which I will bring my own materials and ideas in which we should work and will go through the whole academic process of learning music.

"David is unlike any guitar teacher I have worked with. He pays close attention to details like finger placement or guitar hold and listens carefully to correct any bad habits, posture or form. Sometimes you are used to playing a certain way and don't notice some bad form or habits and he's able to diagnose sound issues. David is also great at being encouraging and suggesting ways of playing that makes sense for each song. He customizes the lesson so that you feel good about playing. He makes playing really fun and what seemed hard before, he helps to make it easy. He brings helps you feel like a rockstar after a few lessons. I highly recommend David!"

How to Simplify Your Live Guitar Rig for Performances

Playing the guitar is such a fantastic experience. It’s so relieving to be on stage or in your designated practice space and just wail on your instrument. However, one of the difficulties of being a guitar player is deciding what gear is needed for live performances. We often get trapped in thinking that we must have the biggest and loudest guitar rig for shows, accompanied by a pedalboard equipped with 30+ pedals.
