I began studying ear training in high school, and have taken several semesters of college-level ear training. In addition, I have studied piano at an intermediate level. Ear training is an amazing tool for improving intonation on your instrument and interpreting music in general. I have the following resources at my disposal for use in ear training lessons:

- The Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis (Clendinning and Marvin)

- The Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis workbook (Clendinning and Marvin)

- The Musician's Guide to Aural Skills Sight-Singing book (Murphy, Phillips, Marvin, Clendinning)

- Materials and Techniques of Post-Tonal Music (Kostka and Santa)

- Grand piano (in my College Studio and can be used online)

- Yamaha electric piano (in my Home Studio and can be used online)

I have been teaching piano almost as long as I have been performing, coming up on 10 years. I started teaching beginners when I was just a teenager, and as I learned more about pedagogy and about piano myself, I branched into teaching more advanced students. To date, I have taught lessons to over 100 different students ranging in age from 5 to 70, and ranging in skill from complete beginner to college piano performance major.

Not every student is going to think I’m the best fit for them. I expect consistent practice, completion of assignments, and attention to detail in music. I have had many trial lessons that don’t pan out because the student or parent thinks my expectations are too high for them. Make no mistake; I expect a lot, but I also care deeply about music and have great understanding and sympathy for those who genuinely try. Whether your goal is to learn to read music, improve rhythm, learn to play the great classical repertoire, or simply have a good time learning the ...

About Kessa

I received my BM in piano performance from Brigham Young University, studying under Dr. Richard Anderson and Dr. Irene Peery-Fox. While there, I studied pedagogy from master teachers Dr. Irene Peery-Fox and Dr. Jared Pierce, who taught me both how to run a studio and how to manage individual lesson

Excellent. Nothing gets by her; very helpful.

I had the opportunity to work with Kessa when we were both in undergrad and I was trying to decide whether or not to become a music major. I was feeling pretty discouraged with my current piano teacher at the school and talked with Kessa since we had a class together and I knew she was a piano major. I had a few lessons with her and she gave me so many helpful ideas about how to approach my pieces and improve my practice habits. She was very kind and didn’t make me feel bad at all, but still pushed me hard in those lessons because she believed in me. Even though I ended up deciding not to go into music after all, I still value those few lessons I had with her and recommend her to everyone at any level.

Kessa is a very professional and talented piano teacher. My son loves going to lessons and we love hearing him practice such pretty music. We're impressed with Kessa's ability to explain confusing concepts and to encourage my son when he is having a tough time. She's done so well with transitioning to Zoom lessons during the pandemic and we love being able to have lessons from home.

I teach:
TENOR BANJO - MANDOLIN - TENOR GUITAR - ACOUSTIC GUITAR
Please go to the instrument listing and it will explain about that particular Instrument.

Hello,
I first want to explain about the Tenor Banjo it's different from the 5 string Banjo used mostly in Bluegrass and Country.

Tenor Banjo has 4 strings, it comes in 17 fret and 19 fret and generally used in Irish/Celtic and Jazz music.

Irish /Celtic music you play single note melodies and in Jazz the majority of the time you strum.

Standard Tuning: C, G, D, A - Same as a Viola and Cello
Irish Tenor Tuning: G, D, A, E - Same as a Mandolin and Violin
Chicago Tuning: D, G, B, E - This tuning is the same as the first four strings of a guitar

The name "Tenor" has nothing to do with the pitch, I read it was a mistake somewhere in history as 4 string banjos were used in American Tango in the 20th century called Tango Banjos, then somewhere changed to Tenor through time.

I accommodate all students differently ...

About Antonio

Hello everyone! I have been working as a professional musician since I was 14, playing Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, Old Time and Bluegrass tunes. I'm the first in Texas to place first in Tenor Banjo & Mandolin in Mid-west Fleadh to compete in Ireland. I started the band Reel Treble with 2 ot

Antonio is a marvelous and very talented musician and performer with experience far beyond his years. He is very friendly and helpful with a warm personality. He is expert tenor banjoist and very proficient in many other instruments as well.
Catherine
Antonio has been involved in the teaching and learning of music since his earliest years and it has been such a thrill and a delight to watch his talent grow. Not only is Antonio a top-notch musician who is in demand at festivals and other venues, but he is personable and easy going which makes his ability to teach even better. I have first hand knowledge of his ability to work with younger students which is a rare gift that not all musicians can do successfully. Yet, even at his "younger than some others" age, he has the respect and the ability to teach students of all ages. I recommend Antonio on mandolin and banjo in particular but I have no doubt he is excellent on guitar as well. Another wonderful characteristic of a great teacher is their own personal journey in learning. Antonio is always seeking the expertise and advise from other great instructors which is an important part of teaching that is often overlooked. Antonio is truly the complete package and you will be well pleased with his services.

"Kiah is the only person who has given me voice lessons. I worked with her during her undergraduate, and we spent about half an hour a week for a few months focusing on my voice. She was able to help me figure out my breath support better, and helped me work on an audition piece several times. Her help made a big difference in my confidence and in getting me to sing with a clearer sound. I highly suggest taking lessons from her, and although my only experience with her is as a vocalist, she is an accomplished pianist and musician, and wonderful teacher."

5 Common Mistakes of Beginner Guitarists

Buying your first guitar and strumming your very first note can be an exciting feeling - and that's only the beginning!  Pretty soon, you'll be mastering major and minor chords, impressing your friends and family with full songs and spouting off music theory.  And of course, next comes venturing on stage, sold-out shows and hearing the roar of the crowd, right? Before you get too far ahead of yourself, it's important to evaluate your playing style and make sure you have good practice habits …
