Please see my main profile for info about my experience.

Violin is a tough instrument. I am happy to take on children/young adults with dedicated parents behind them. Adult beginners, read on.

I have an emphasis on reading and technique. I have a lot of experience doing private lessons as well as lots of experience as an orchestra teacher.

My biggest goals for violin students is to check for bad habits and nip them in the bud. Bad habits on violin can do massive damage later-so I really make sure to address them immediately.

I'd say the vibe of my lessons are like being with a fitness coach. I want you to get your money's worth-so I give a lot of feedback and advice. I like to text homework to students or student's parents at the end of the lesson.

I am used to working with children and teens so I tend to focus on pacing in the lesson to maintain the student's concentration.

I take this approach with adults as well! The first time it can come off as a little ...

Mary has been teaching my son Thomas for a few months now. He had been doing in-person group lessons at school before the Covid lockdown. The improvement we have seen in his playing since beginning lessons with Mary is amazing. We are all enjoying watching his progress. Additionally Mary is very responsive to communications and flexible in respect of lesson changes.

My son is taking lessons with Miss Mary since the lockdown. He is really enjoying each lesson and it has been such a blessing. Miss Mary is used to the technical difficulties involved with an online class and quickly gets around them. She is also good at helping correct students such as a bad bow hold even in online format. With my expansive experience as a violinist in various genres/settings and my three years of teaching experience, I provide my students with a well-rounded and unique take on learning the violin. While I often start with classical music to get the students familiar with note reading, fundamental playing techniques, and basic music theory, I do take the time to get to know the students and their musical interests - thus tailoring my curriculum and repertoire choices towards the students' interests and goals. A specialty of mine is arranging pieces and songs from various genres for the violin based on the student's preferences and level of playing.

As a board-certified music therapist with a passion for mental health and well-being, another goal of mine is helping students develop a sense of self-compassion and patience as they learn their instrument and run into many bumps and blocks throughout their musical journey. Through verbal processing and active listening, I provide my ...

Akiko taught me to play the viola when I was just getting started! She's so considerate with helping you get the fundamentals of not only technique, but also posture and how to stretch so that I wouldn't get sore. It's something that's stuck with me for years. I've never met another teacher who has helped me develop my musicality or talked with me about music theory as much as Akiko, and it's so important to know these things to play honestly and understand the music! Honestly you couldn't ask for a better teacher!! I'm so grateful to have learned my instrument with her. Thank you so much :)
Julie
I’ve been taking lessons with Akiko for the past two and a half years as an adult beginner. I’ve played other instruments all my life and have had many teachers, so I can say with great confidence that she is a uniquely talented teacher. Akiko is equally adept at diagnosing and addressing technique problems as she is at teaching musicality. She also knows when to redirect your attention from one to the other—and it is amazing to discover how looking at the big picture and being reminded to play the music can address a seemingly intractable technique problem. Akiko does not just teach you to play the violin. She teaches you to play music, which is probably the reason that you are playing the violin in the first place. I cannot emphasize the value of this enough. You don’t have to be a technical virtuoso before you begin to express yourself artistically. Akiko has so much to offer for advanced violinists as well. The way she brings music theory to life in whatever piece you’re working on will transform your interpretation of anything else you play. She gives you the tools to create your own organic interpretation in a way that also fits with the piece and its historical context. I find every lesson to be reinvigorating. When at times I have become stuck or frustrated, Akiko has always helped me to take a different tack and find freedom again. I feel grateful for the opportunity to work with her. She both an incredible teacher and a talented artist!

I took lessons from Akiko for over a year as a beginner-intermediate violin player. Under Akiko’s tutelage, I was able to play as lead violin in my school orchestra concerts and pass my violin exams. Akiko’s kind and encouraging personality strengthened my confidence in playing the violin. I’ve had experience with other teachers but Akiko helped me to really further my relationship with music. Her enthusiasm for music has definitely rubbed off on me and I couldn’t be more grateful for having Akiko as my teacher! I wholeheartedly recommend Akiko to anyone looking to pick up the violin, intermediate players, and those who are more advanced.

"Keiko is that rare combination--an accomplished violinist AND a great teacher. Hard to come by... Her passion for music is contagious and, for her students, inspiring. Keiko taught my husband and my daughter. Her approach was different for each and tailored to challenge but never pressure them. Her engaging style and good sense of humor made lessons fly by, and when it came time to practice, motivated them. As a person, she's wonderful too. As a teacher, she's a gift."

"Dan is fantastic. He is approachable, reliable, and speaks to my daughter (mature age 9) as an adult which encourages her to take responsibility for her instrument and practice habits. She is just beginning, but has already made great strides with the violin. I have no doubt she will be able to play with the orchestra in the next school year; and I think this will be a long successful teaching relationship."

"Many years ago I was coached in a chamber music setting by Cornelia (in one hour the piece had been wholly transformed), and when my daughter, then 6, came to me and said she wanted to play the violin, I knew exactly whom to call. I was a little worried then that Cornelia might not take beginners, but to my joy, her attitude is (excuse me for putting words in your mouth, Cornelia) "Of course I take beginners! How else to keep them from developing bad habits in the first place?" Fast forward to now: that 6 year-old became the concertmistress of the NEC Youth Symphony in Boston, has traveled around the country and around Asia playing the violin with the highly competitive National Youth Orchestra, and continues to play with excellent players to this day--and all because she was set on the right path by Cornelia, who is focused and kind. She's also demanding of excellence, and wildly enthusiastic about your progress. If you want to pay for lessons but don't really care about what kind of job you do, go somewhere else. Cornelia is the real deal. Violin isn't easy: if you want to start right, start here. If you want to get better, you've come to the right place. If you want really to think about the music you're playing, she's your guy. Plus she's got a great laugh."

"This is an exceptional Instructor...

I initially joined Take Lessons to provide Piano instruction to my youngest daughter, that did not work out too well. I had already paid in advance and so with the remaining balance I decided to provide My older daughter with Violin Instruction since she is playing for her school.
Peter came in and has improved my daughter's talent in such a short time that it's almost unexplainable. He connects, he's precise, and he's easy going. In no time my daughter could literally read music as per his instruction. He's done wonders.

I highly recommend Peter to anyone looking for the right instructor. Thanks."

How Much Does a Violin Cost?

It’s no surprise that when you decide to take violin lessons, you need a violin! It's common for absolute beginners to rent a violin for a few months until they are sure they are ready to take the next step of buying their instrument. If you are in this stage, your next question is likely this: how much does a violin cost? Although violin prices can run the gamut from $100 to $100,000 and more, as a beginner, you need an instrument that suits your current abilities without being too pricey. …
