I'm a Brazilian musician around 35 years old, based in NYC for a PhD Research in Music Composition, MASTER in Piano Performance and Singing, Professor at a University in Brazil and in the US, also Bachelor in Singing and Composition. I am also educated in multiple techniques, that I apply to my unique methodology. I combine elements of Linklater, Estill, Alexandre Technique, Feldenkrais, GDS; I am certified under the Somatic Voicework Technique and I am becoming a designated  LInklater technique instructor soon (5 years education in NYC). The combination of this technique allows me to work from a body/emotional perspective to approach music. 

Through the last 20 years of performing and teaching, I created a unique program that approaches music in a holistic way. I approach a cross-technique between piano-singing-composition and a cross-genre repertoire, that (finally) includes folk music from multiple cultures. Deeply grounded in studies of music, the student receives a program to be created collectively with me during classes, including syllabus, methods for assessment, coaching and opportunities for performance and recording.

I am very experienced leading classes of piano and Jazz/pop singing, songwriting, for kids and adults. I have a huge repertoire of classical music, pop, musical theater, Brazilian and Latin songs. Also, the practice can include harmony studies, ear training, improvisation, and composition. The main concept of my methodology is about using creativity, technology, and good music to make the students feel inspired and motivated to play the songs they want and develop skills. I teach in English, Portuguese or Spanish.

Professor  Cândida is an inspiring world-class musician, classically trained and rooted in Brazilian/Latin culture.  While completing her Doctorate, she holds a Master in Piano Performance, Bachelors also in piano, singing, composition, studies in music production and electronic music, sound therapy, special needs and coaching. Professor Cândida is a true educator and artist, specialized in Music Pedagogy.

Her artistic work mixes folkloric music, bossa nova, pop, latin and African music, jazz, and styles of world music.  After 15 years of teaching in Universities in Brazil, the United States and other countries, she created a program in which she offers her experience as a music educator for all ages worldwide students.

Prof. Cândida combines her formal academic studies in University as an artist and educator with studies and certifications in Dalcroze, Linklater, improvisation, circle singing, music production, technology and especially her experience in studios and playing with musicians all over America. TECHNIQUE

Being trained in different techniques, she offers a combination of different methodologies to suit the best material for each student. ARTS, MUSIC COGNITION AND NEUROSCIENCE

Prof. Cândida is highly oriented by studies in Neuroscience, to develop methodologies that work for kids stimulation, healthy aging programs, and special needs, among some other special cases. Finding the right methodology to work on music education is a key aspect to guarantee long-lasting results and motivation - especially for kids. Music and arts are applied as well-being activities, for artistic and health purposes. This is one of the main aspects of learning from a trained and experienced music educator.

Candida is an incredible music teacher and I feel lucky to be her student. 

I started taking lessons with Candida since March this year. With some background in guitar (mostly self-taught, mixed with learning from different teachers on and off), I wanted to create a more solid music foundation. I wanted not just to play guitar by following videos and tabs, but become a “musician”, that can improvise, play by ear, compose my own pieces eventually. My goals included learning how to read sheet music, training for a better ear, basic singing and piano skills. Candida created a personalized learning plan with all the above goals in mind, gave me homework each week that was catered to my strengths and interests. Her vast knowledge in music education also allowed me to learn tactics backed by research to accelerate my memory and overall learning. We focused on the following topics this year: For singing, correct placement of head voice and chest voice; practices to soften head voice in higher notes and gain a smoother transition. Ear train that focused on singing (not just listening) melodic and harmonic chords (triads and different extensions). Sheet music reading and playing for several classical pieces (Mozart, Chopin, Tchaikovsky). Basic chords voicing, cadences, inversions, and accompanying singing for some classic songs (Elton John, Cold Play for example). I was amazed at how much progress I made in just 9 months. I am able to sing confidently several songs I loved (including Bohemian Rhapsody) while accompanying myself on piano (I had only touched piano probably only 3 times before March). I also added couple of classical piano pieces into my repertoire (including a beautiful Waltz by Chopin that dumbfounded my friends). I can “hear” melodies better and locate notes with much ease. Candida also encourages her students to show their progress and perform, and I even participated in two student recitals this year, and was quite proud of the performances. I can't recommend Candida enough!

My 11 year old worked once 45 minutes weekly with Candid for approximately 5 weeks practicing a couple English songs she was familiar with and two Portuguese songs that were new to her (she does not speak Portuguese). It was incredibly rewarding to witness her skills develop in such a short period, as well as her self-confidence and self image. She is half Brazilian, and she was so proud to relate with her Papai—Daddy—in his language. I also had the pleasure to virtually attend an online concert of Candid’s adult and younger students. Her rapport was beautiful with the patchwork of her student body—an eclectic group whose skills filled the spectrum, but whose passion burned bright as one. I highly recommend Candid as a teacher. I will note that she did classes online, and I encouraged practice between classes. She did not solely rely on the weekly classes as a means for  learning and improvement. Her skills improved steadily over the five weeks with the guidance and careful coaching of Candid’s classes. Practice between classes was essential to make the most out of all Candid has to offer.

For 2020, I focused a lot on left-hand ostinatos for improvising, and practicing scales & chords. I also worked on composition, recording, and in general improved the timing of both hands. 

For classical piano, I worked a bit on the Adagio from the Moonlight Sonata, the Eb Major Nocturne and the Adagio from the C major Mozart Concerto, and also the first Invention.  

I dedicated more time to the improvising and ostinato practice. While my pedaling improved, it still has a ways to go before I can play some of the classical piano repertoire.

In any case, it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot!
