You're jamming with friends and the singer cues you for a solo. Now what? If you can play parts but would be completely lost improvising a lead, this is your crash course. 

You don't have to be a virtuoso; just some experience playing. This course is for anyone who wants to go beyond learning repertoire and flex their creativity, no matter what your instrument.

During each 45-minute meeting, you'll learn a few simple concepts applicable to blues, jazz, and rock improvisation, and put them to use by jamming with backing tracks. 

At the end of the session, you'll have a plan for learning more. And of course you're welcome to come back for another jam.

I cannot learn something without wanting to immediately begin sharing what I know. That's what inspired me to begin teaching, and it continues to drive me today.

My credo is, "Take fun seriously." There is a reason we say that we "play" music; it is meant to be entertaining, for the listener and the performer. I know you want to learn to play an instrument so that you have one more pleasure in your life, and not to take up a new profession. But I also assume the highest potential in my students. If something is worth learning, it's worth learning well. My goal is for people to say to each other, "There seem to be a lot of good guitarists coming out of the Madison area. What's in the water?" My bottom line: Whatever your personal objectives, it is my job to discover them and help you meet them, whether you're interested performing at the campfire or the concert hall.

If you do not live nearby, we can learn together through online chat via FaceTime, Skype, or Google Hangout. I have openings during early daytime CST, which means if you're in the UK or Europe and you're an English speaker, I would be happy to schedule you.

My goal for composition students is for them to understand the basics of melody, harmony, and form, and apply them by working on small composition projects. We can focus on classical or jazz composition, or songwriting.

Lyle has been great. We have tried a couple other banjo teachers. My son is super ADD and he is patient with him. My son is always excited to come to a lesson. He finally found something he is focused on learning. Maybe it’s the teacher, maybe it’s the Banjo? Either way, I would recommend Lyle.

So far so good. Very patient as mistakes after mistake was made. Corrected quite a few mistakes I was making so that my habits would be good habits from the start. Let me talk to myself as I messed up and complimented me when I was on the right track.

First "technical" part of lesson was manageable and care taken by Lyle to make sure I understood what was being presented. When the lesson started we got right to the point and decided the best direction to take with the limited experience I have.   I have goals for the next lesson and something to work with and someone to help me along the way.

I am a complete novice - my first ever guitar lesson. This lesson started from holding the guitar, pick, fingers and finger movement, and form. I started the book and I learned lots. Lyle was very efficient and professional.
