Outstanding instructor of guitar. He goes above and beyond when it comes to teaching students how to play the guitar. He is very flexible, understanding, knowledgeable, and patient when he delivers his classes. Not only does he teach students how to play the guitar, he also does other things like teaching them how to tune their guitars, how to change keys when necessary to make a song sound better, and how to use a capo when playing the guitar. All of these are above and beyond what most teachers have taught me in the past. I really enjoy taking classes from my instructor.

Cameron C.

Littleton, CO

About Cameron

I have played rock and blues guitar for 30 years. I grew up with the Beatles and Rolling Stones, but now play in the Albert King, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton blues styles. I know most rock, blues, folk and jazz styles with some knowledge of country and classical.

I have been the rhythm, lead or bass guitar player in six bands spanning 30 years. My current band is West of the Blues.

I was mentored by Mike Bruce. Mike was BB King’s, Bobby Blue Bland’s and Bob Seger’s lead guitar player for many years. He has played with everyone from Eric Clapton to Janet Jackson.

During the Mike Br
uce period my band opened for him almost everywhere. He became my mentor and guitar teacher and only then did I start learning how to play the instrument that initially looked easy.

I have taught Rock Band and Guitar in Denver Public Schools for the past four years.

I have taught guitar and bass informally for about 14 years and our Littleton based lesson studio has been in operation for eight years with lessons taught more formally.

I also current teach the Colorado Blues Society's School of blues. Additionally I am the Band Director for 3 of the School of Blues bands.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have a “parent’s always welcome” attitude in a well equipped furnished basement studio. I can make recording and CD creation available.

My teaching method guarantees you how to play the guitar, not just songs by memory or tab.

I call my style the Quick Fret board Mastery Teaching Style. Using this you will learn quickly how to play songs and have fun, but will be gaining the fundamentals all along. There are no boring theory classes or repetitive scale sessions, but you will leave each lesson with new knowledge of theory and scales without actually studying them separately. You will instead being playing songs and having fun.

We have a custom workbook that includes CHORDS, SCALES, PROGRESSIONS, CHARTING and ADVANCED THEORY. The workbook outlines the basics, we add to it every week with material customized for you.

We go as fast or as slow as you decide. We give homework, but it is not mandatory.

If you are a student you will shine in your school, group or band. If you are an adult you will be amazed at how fast you learn and how good you will become.

We hope you grow to love music and the guitar as much as I do. ROCK ON!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Finished basement set up as music studio with guitars, amps, a sound system and seating for parents. Les Paul, Strat, Martin and Taylor guitars. Fender (2) and Mesa Boogie amps. Full sound system. We couldn't be happier!

My daughter has been taking guitar lessons with Cameron for several months now. She really loves it, and has learned a great deal. She is learning both guitar and bass guitar, and Cameron leaves it up to her which one she wishes to focus on that week. He is flexible, patient, kind, with a comfortable laid-back approach. My daughter leaves her lessons inspired. Cameron has a comfortable well lit studio in his home. He is an experienced teacher and performer, and has good advice and tricks to make learning easier. She is using a personalized workbook for lessons, and there is an emphasis on improv and learning by listening. We couldn't be happier!

Johanna N.

Denver, CO

About Johanna

I love to teach music and I live to help my students learn about the joys that being a musician can bring. If you are looking for a piano or voice instructor or a theory teacher who is passionate about music and about teaching, then I am that person. I work to help my students achieve the best possible results in his or her lessons while still having fun.

I have a Master's of Education from Regis University and a Bachelor's of Arts in Piano Performance from Western State College. I have taught piano lessons for 12 years and voice lessons for 3 years. I am constantly looking for new ways
to incorporate music into my life and into my students' lives and to help maximize everyone's learning experiences.

*** Lesson Details ***
I use a fairly traditional classical approach in the use of literature and materials, but I also prefer to take into account student learning styles and preferences. I understand that everyone learns in different ways and has different interests, so along with using the classical literature, I try to incorporate student interests and learning styles. I do expect students to follow my rules and procedures during lessons and practice times, and these are all common sense, such as be respectful and be on time, etc. I also expect students to practice regularly. I will find a way to make practice time fun and interesting for all of my students. I do expect all of my students to make adequate progress, and within 6 months they will most likely be progressing to either a Primer B or Grade 1. (All students start at Primer A, which is the most basic level, unless they have had prior experience). Otherwise, I expect students with prior experience to progress have a level every 6 months.

Piano lessons focus on using a combination of technique, theory worksheets, and performance/practice songs. This helps students to have a varied approach and it also addresses all aspects of musicality, as well as incorporating multiple learning styles. I prefer for students to begin with the Thompson series and to progress through that series while also working on level appropriate solo pieces.

Voice lessons focus on beginner technique, pronunciation and enunciation, breath technique, and English pieces to start. As students progress, they may work through Italian opera and operetta, German lieder, and other more challenging songs. The foreign series includes work on foreign pronunciation and operatic singing. If a student chooses, they may also focus on a more folk-based approach than the traditional operatic approach.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room: piano, sheet music, metronome, pencils.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide some books, or I can purchase books at a discounted price. I can also bring a metronome. I expect the student to have a piano or a full-length keyboard. I sometimes bring pencils, but I expect the student to have one handy to mark their music.

*** Specialties ***
Piano: beg - adv
Voice: beg - inter

I teach piano and voice. For piano I teach classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and ragtime. I focus on teaching students how to sightread, memorize, learn theoretical and pedagogical concepts, and learn how to improvise. I can also teach accompaniment.

For voice I teach classical operatic style, Broadway/show tunes, popular, country, jazz, choral, blues, and rock styles. I help students to find comfort with their own voices, learn how to sing in a way that supports their voice, and keeps their voice healthy. I also work with teaching pitch recognition, sight reading, oral recall, and breath technique.

Johanna is awesome!!

I gave her a general idea of what I wanted and so far her instruction has helped greatly. After only two lessons I am more comfortable singing, and I am starting to expand my range. She also likes to have fun during her lessons. She is always pleasant and upbeat, and her criticism is always fair and positive. She honestly wants you to succeed in your goals and it comes through in her teaching.

Mary F.

Denver, CO

About Mary

I've been playing piano since I was 6 yrs. old, and guitar and organ since I was 13. I've been able to use music in so many ways, and that is the opportunity I want for my students. From singing in school and church choirs, to accompanying and directing them, I've had a lot of enjoyable experiences. I've had the fun of performing solo and with bands, and have been teaching music for about 25 yrs, both privately and in the schools. My BA is in music education and my Masters is in individual performance. I've taught K-Jr College music classes in general music, chorus, piano, guitar, and theory.
I think my favorite form of teaching is still one-on-one lessons. Working with one student allows me to adjust my teaching to their particular learning style and needs.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm strict enough to make sure that my students make progress and get a strong musical foundation. I'm laid back enough to make sure that they have a good time doing so and can feel that they are setting their own goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Grand Piano, Electric Piano, Guitars at Home
Basic Piano and Organ at Church

*** Travel Equipment ***
Supplemental music books are loaned from time to time.
I expect the student to have an instrument to practice on and lesson books (purchased)

*** Specialties ***

Extremely patient

I've loved banjo music for years but never had the courage to learn how to play until recently. I'm a senior citizen with absolutely no musical background. What I like best about Mary is that she's totally patient and encouraging but at the same time pushes me out of my comfort zone so that I learn something new with each lesson. When I struggle with how to do something, she suggests different ways to attack the problem or ways to work around it. In just a few months she's helped me be able to play a song for someone that they can actually recognize, which was the first goal I had set for myself. I look forward to many more goals. I'm so glad to have Mary as my teacher!

Mary is an excellent teacher. Having been a teacher for 20 years, I tend to closely observe other teachers. Mary had much more to teach me than I was willing to learn. Playing the guitar is a psycho motor skill and as such it must be practiced diligently to gain the muscle memory necessary to perform the tasks. I didn't do it but Mary kept encouraging me and the more she did, the more I practiced, although I still fall woefully short of 30 minutes every day. Her lessons in music theory, however, are paying dividends since I also play some other instruments.
She is kind, patient, skilled and knows music inside out. I don't think I could have chosen a better teacher. I will start again as soon as I am able. Thanks Mary, job well done!

About Johanna

I am an educator and teacher, dedicated to helping students succeed through quality planning, curriculum, student interaction and parent communication. I have taught piano and voice for over 15 years and have worked as a solo performer and accompanist. My goal is to help students to enjoy what they are learning and to advance in their technique and performance. I take each lesson as a unique approach because each person is unique. I will always include some classical conditioning to get the basics down, but then adjust according to the student. Music should be fun and exciting.
