About James
BA, University of Pittsburgh, Music
MA DePaul University, Jazz Performance

I have over 10 years of teaching experience. I loved every one of them. I do consider myself a passionate educator and a patient instructor. I had been blessed to have received masterful instruction from brilliant, warm teachers in my own training and so I do understand firsthand the value in kind and passionate education.

My theory of practice is to build a lesson plan with each student individually. A major goal for me is to present information in a way that can empower the student to identify their own interests. Ultimately we'll get to a place where the student can persue their growth independently.

Music is a very personal journey. To recognize it as such is the first victory.

My bio:
Jim is a pianist/instructor who is based in the greater Chicag
oland area. Jim began his professional performing career since he was sixteen when he started playing the city's finest clubs. Jim has performed with seasoned greats such as: Ira Sullivan, Mark Whitfeild, Cladio Roditi, Donald Harrison, Antonio Hart, Jimmy Owens, Abe Laboriel, Rodger Humphries, Cecil Bridgewater, Yotam Silberstein, Ron Affif, Alexander King, and John Moulder. His debut album "Explosion" is out on Delmark Records features columbia recording artist Frank Catalano and jazz legend Richie Cole . Jim's second album, "Blue Skies," is also on Delmark records and features two legends of jazz Ira Sullivan and Roger Humphries. He  has studied under two Art Blakey Jazz Messenger Alumni: Dr Nathan Davis--who's performed with everyone from Herbie Hancock to Benny Golson; and Dr. Leon Lee Dorsey who was an active member of Lional Hampton's big band for several years, recorded with the likes of Freddie Hubbard and is an active member of Hilton Cruiz's trio. Jim is the recipient of the Pitt-Mellon BNY jazz scholarship for outstanding performance and composition.
As a composer Jim has had quite a volume of original material spanning a wide array of styles performed by musicians such as PSO members (Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), and Pittsburgh-based Alia Musica. Jim's expertise spans classical--both old and modern, Jazz--both old and modern, modern popular styles such as rock, hip-hop, funk; and the intersections of these three camps, classical, jazz, and popular styles, which seem to be the direction of the 21st century.

About Loretta
I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style. I am currently preparing to complete my certificat
ion in music therapy. Those who can do teach, and those who can teach totally do!

*** Lesson Details ***
You will set the pace for your lesson. I want you to enjoy your time in music, so your lessons will be completely customized. We will develop a goal plan for you so that our time together is interesting, fun, and we make progress! In 3-6 months, you will have a stable technical program and have started a portfolio of music for performances, no matter what level you are. We can share sheet music in person or online (I can even email you great links to amazing performances). Just let me know where you want to be in music, and we'll work together to make it happen. I can't wait to meet you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
First - YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT FOR PRACTICE AT HOME BEFORE BEGINNING LESSONS!!! Consistency is very important for learning, and weekly lessons ARE NOT enough for growth. My home studio is in a private music room. Parents can relax in our family space with coffee or tea and enjoy their children's learning at their leisure. My studio includes a 88-key keyboard, technology setup with an iMac, microphone and stand, a mirror for posture and musical instruments. I carry books for the lessons themselves (not for practice at home), and we can download or print out music as desired. If you take lessons online, I can email you links and sheet music as needed. Feel free to bring any additional equipment music you would like to share. I have some great recommendations for music books designed for both children and adult learners.

*** Specialties ***
jazz, contemporary, classical (instrumental), original, computer music composition

About Melodie
Student GOALS
(1) Student learns how other artists use music to communicate, advocate, heal, and grow.
(2) Student learns how to use music for self-discovery of artistic aims.
(3) Singing student learns how own body functions as a musical instrument, on a flexible schedule.

I am Miss Melodie F, a highly experienced private lesson teacher of voice, piano, and theory. Please read my profile carefully before you sign up with me. Complete beginners are welcome. Advanced lessons are available for singing and voice only.

Are you an adult who misses the love of music you enjoyed before life responsibilities took over? If so, you are like most of my recent students.

I teach adult students private music lessons. My specialties and approaches are
(1) blending what the student wants with what the student needs,
(2) classical v
ocal technique from a body awareness perspective,
(3) how to sight-read keyboard scores, and
(4) music theory translated into something that makes sense.

If you don't practice that's not a deal breaker, but admit it so I can modify the plans to give you your money's worth.

You may schedule a lesson when you want or can afford one rather than being forced to take a lesson at the same time every week; that is the Schedule-As-You-Go option where lessons have no recurring schedule slot. I have weekday office hours available on a Schedule-As-You-Go basis which you won't find on the general availability information here on this profile.

Singing and Voice
Singing and voice lessons have minimum 45min duration. Do you want to do the physical work it takes to become a better singer? Do you have a place to practice? Have you read the "Your First Singing Lesson" section found on each Singing or Voice Subject Page and still want to take singing lessons with me? If you can’t say “Yes” to all of these things I can still work with you. Sign up for Music Theory lessons instead, tell me what you want to learn, and we can go from there.

Piano
Do you have regular access to a “real” piano, with weighted keys and a damper pedal? If all you have is an unacceptable keyboard sign up for Music Theory and I can still teach you how to read keyboard music, and play scales, chords, and songs by ear.

Music Theory
Music theory lessons are the most flexible option for general curiosity. You don't need much more than pencil and paper to start music theory lessons. Tell me what you’re interested in and I’ll teach it from a Music Theory perspective.

The current fee for a 45min lesson appointment in my studio is $41. Online singing and theory lessons are the same price. Lessons must be prepaid, with a strict 24hr cancellation deadline.

My teaching studio is a residential office in a high second floor walk-up near the intersection of Chicago and Ashland. I might be able to travel within East Village / Ukrainian Village / Wicker Park / Noble Square for an additional $15 travel fee. If I travel to your location we can negotiate younger ages and group fees.

Upfront deal breakers:
• I have a problem with fragrances. If I can smell something on you I may not be able to work with you. We could discuss online lessons as an alternative.
• One quietly observing adult human guest is welcome with 48-hour notice.
• If you are a singing student you need a place where you can practice and you must read the Your First Singing Lesson section prior to your first cancellation deadline.
• If you don’t have regular access to something that can legally be called a piano, including weighted keys and a damper pedal, don’t take Piano lessons.

Ask me a question using the Ask-A-Question feature. Watch my videos and think about it. I'm a good teacher. I sincerely appreciate the time it took you to read my profile. Thank you.

My very first singing lesson ever was informative, eye opening, well articulated with good imagery I could relate to, challenging, and fun. Melodie’s good coaching made me aware of both things I was doing somewhat well and tips for improving on them, and simple errors that we worked on in a very encouraging and corrective manner. I’m looking forward to practicing and my next lesson.

So far I've only had one lesson with Melodie and she really cares to help you achieve what you're trying to accomplish. We went through a few things such as posture, how to breathe, humming, vowels, position of tongue and other things. About myself: I don't know how to sing and this is my first singing lesson.

About Phil
I've taught both privately and in the classroom (in schools from Pre-K to college, and through workshops), and have been a working musician and teacher for more than 25 years. I have a degree in music from Columbia College Chicago (Summa Cum Laude). My students have included everyone from absolute beginners to working professionals like myself. Many of my beginner students have also gone on to careers in music.

My approach in private instruction involves tailoring the lessons to the specific needs of each student, while making sure that he/she has the knowledge and technique to succeed in their creative endeavors. Whether it's a hobby or a potential career, I leave nothing out. You will learn the entire instrument. In cases where a student works in more than one subject, one session can typically be applied to all/both of them. I striv
e to help every student find their own creative voice, while building the skill sets required to work in any style of music.

As a writer, I've written for everything from music publications to LinkedIn, and have an award-winning nonfiction book that chronicles my journey as an independent musician.

As an entrepreneur, I've had several non-music businesses on the side over the years, and have weathered every twist and turn of the music industry for more than 30 years. My indie record label, founded in 1994, is breaking new ground by empowering artists to have a hand in their own business success while never compromising their art.

As a public speaker, I started speaking in church at age 9. I have spoken to audiences large and small about everything from music education and the music business, to dealing with addiction, to the teachings of engaged Buddhism.

Please feel free to contact me with the "Ask Phil a Question" button on my profile here. This can include questions about my method, or regarding days and times for lessons. What you see in my availability here is based on my schedule away from TakeLessons. I have students elsewhere and perform shows regularly. I may have additional times available and tend to have some flexibility. I teach worldwide online. Just ask.

As soon as you're ready to book lessons, you can use the Green Button after selecting your area of study, day and time. I will receive a notification that you've signed up. I will then confirm with you and send a questionnaire regarding your lesson needs within 48 hours.

Thanks for your interest.

I look forward to working with you!

Keith is an amazing teacher. My 7 year old son likes him very much. Before the lessons I worried our boy couldn’t build his interest in playing piano, just lose his enthusiasm after a while as the 7 years old always did. But Keith make me totally worry free, my son likes him very much, and he really knows how to build the kid’s interests and confidence while learning. Now my son enjoyed himself very much with Keith in their piano time. We are so lucky to find Keith.

We had four in-home lessons with Keith and he never once arrived on time. And not like 5 minutes late because of bad traffic or something. Once he was 40 minutes late, and another time he was 45 minutes late. For an hour lesson. At first I though there was some confusion because the time on take lessons was slightly different than the time we agreed to (he asked if we could start earlier than the time slot that was listed, and I agreed) but after speaking with him about it, we were both on the same page as to what time the lesson *should* begin, he just never arrived on time. He seems to be very overbooked and busy and does not respect his clients’ time. He told me that the disparity of arriving on time or a half hour late is “superfluous,” so if you hire him, be prepared to have a wide window of when he could show up. My kids liked him as a teacher, which is why I kept giving him chances and trying to work out scheduling issues (I offered to move our lessons to a different time, but he insisted the time we were at was fine) but in the end, things could not be resolved.

When Bill was my band director over a decade ago, he was the best music teacher I'd had at that point. After reconnecting with him and having him work with me on my techniques more recently as an adult player, that opinion still stands very strongly. He has a wonderful way of phrasing things that help you just "get it," and has expert advice from everything from fundamentals and helping you achieve your best sound, to more advanced techniques such as double and triple tonguing.

Mr. Denton was a fantastic teacher! We worked on articulations and phrasing in the first movement of the Halsey Stevens Sonata and he was able to bring a lot more out of me musically than I thought I was capable of. He made excellent use of the 30 minute online lesson and I came away feeling more confidant as I approach my recital.

In addition to directing the Crimson Youth Choir and teaching privately in the IUPCMS, I directed/arranged music for the IUP Crimson Chords, an elite all-female a capella jazz ensemble. Last fall, I also directed Homer-Center’s Musical Annie and worked on Marion Center’s Musical Marry Poppins. I performed the lead role of Rosalina in IUP’s production of Die Fledermaus and have been a part of other productions including Le nozze di figaro, Suor Angelica, Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes and Godspell. I am also a first-place winner of the NATS Music Theatre competition, held at West Virginia University. I have just relo

Like most music teachers, my passions started with performing myself, and then using those experiences to educate my students. I have be a part of several operas, musicals, choirs, pop and Jazz ensembles, and each experience taught me tactics that I would not have learned anywhere else. I then paired my performing knowledge with my knowledge of education and with that I have successfully taught choirs, bands, vocal a capella ensembles, classrooms, musicals, pit orchestras and many many voice and piano students from ages 5-63!
