About Mandolyn
Hello, thank you for visiting my site!

I am currently a music teacher for Kindergarten-8th grade, teaching general music, concert band and choir, with the occasional school performance of a musical thrown in the mix. My education in music really took off when I attended a Performing Arts High School where I focused mainly on the clarinet, piano and bassoon. During this time I was very active in the High School solo competition scene and took away many state titles in music theory, clarinet and piano. After graduating I received my BFA€™ in Piano Performance from the University of MN-Duluth. While I was studying I was fortunate to have an inspirational conductor who handed instruments of all kinds out to me. This really held my love and appreciation for music and I learned a lot of my teacher technique from her. I later receiv
ed my Masters€™s Degree in an unrelated field but soon realized what I wanted to do in my heart of hearts was teach music.

I have had a lot of experience playing in weddings, background music for large parties and gatherings, and accompaniment for an array of instruments and vocalists. On the clarinet I have performed solo recitals, worked on duets and also played with orchestras. I have a love for music theory and a lot of educational resources for teaching it.

I believe all of these life experiences have really helped me become a natural teacher. I offer a laid back approach and a friendly atmosphere while still providing structure and reasonable expectations. More than anything I want to keep the love and spark for music alive in every student, without that I truly believe it is hard to achieve your greatest goals. This is incorporated in custom lessons for every student.

*** Lesson Details ***
Every lesson is designed for the student in mind as I don'€™t believe any two musicians are alike. People also have different learning styles which I can cater to so everyone is successful. While I have a laid back approach I do give 100% to every lesson I create and I expect the same appreciation from my students. Mistakes are never criticized, rather looked at as a learning experience. When I was taking lessons ruling with an iron fist€™ never benefited me so I make sure to keep a friendly relationship with my students, while still maintaining mutual expectations.

After one month of lessons with me you will have improved on your skills, no matter where you started with me. I put a strong emphasis on artistry alongside technical musicality so you can find your musical voice while still staying true to what you are learning.

My materials range from book series, mostly for beginners, to sheet music for the more advanced students.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring my own clarinet but would expect the student to have their own instrument and any needed equipment. (music stand, piano, clarinet as an example.)

*** Specialties ***
I have been a general music education teacher and have started choral work in this environment for six years. I have a piano performance background and taught lessons for 10 years starting in high school and through some of college.

About Ryan
Ryan is a musician from Jefferson Park who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. Learning to play instruments is one of the true pleasures in his life and he hopes he can make it one of yours, too.

As a teacher Ryan's goals are fairly simple. First and foremost he wants to make his lessons comfortable, interesting and fun. A close second is to build a strong foundation on the basics, so as we learn more advanced techniques we have a solid base of technique to build upon. And third, an understanding of the theory and history behind the music is a great way to engage in the music beyond just the rote learning of technique.

After a brief foray in physics, Ryan settle into a degree in music at the Univer
sity of Illinois, specializing in Ethnomusicology (the study of music of different cultures). This education gave him a strong background in music theory and history in the Western tradition, but also opened him up to a vast experience of a diverse cross section of music from around the world. His insatiable love for learning new instruments started here, where he studied music from West Africa to Bali.

Currently Ryan is a co-lead singer, songwriter and stringed instrument player for the local band Distant Brothers, a folk rock band based out of Chicago. They play venues throughout the Midwest, with some of the notable venues being House of Blues, Metro and Cubby Bear in Chicago. Another highlight of his time with the band has been a collaboration with Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra, where he not only was able to play in collaboration with the orchestra, but joined in the arranging and conceptualization of some of the pieces played.

Hi, my name is Alessandro. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from DePaul University School of Music and I have been teaching lessons since April 2015. I am currently studying for my Master's Degree at DePaul as well. I think there are two important parts of taking clarinet lessons: learning the fundamentals, and having lots of fun. I focus on basics like embouchure, air, and tone to help you develop good technique. I will also work with you to select music that you like and that you will be excited to play.

About Evan
My goals for teaching voice are simple: to make you a better singer and foster your love for music. We will accomplish this together through exploring the classical repertoire and working on technique, musical understanding, and language. I love working with singers at all levels of experience, and I hope you'll come in for a lesson!

Since my professional debut in 2010, I have performed internationally as an operatic and concert singer. I have a Master of Music in Opera Performance degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance degree from Northwestern University.

In addition to currently being a private voice teacher at New Trier High School in Winnetka, I have always maintained a close connection to the city of Chicago: as an alumnus of both Northwestern University and the Lyric Opera of Chi
cago Ryan Opera Center, with over 50 performances with Lyric Opera of Chicago, and over a dozen appearances with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Opera Theater, Grant Park Orchestra, and Chicago Civic Orchestra. I encourage you to visit EvanBoyerBass.com to learn more about me.

About Drew
Drew is a flute student in rigorous preparation for a future career in classical music. For 15 years, he has participated in numerous music competitions, festivals, and performance opportunities, both as a soloist and part of ensembles, and actively continues to do so. He is an advocate of the arts and passionate about spreading the gift of music, which has lead him to teach over 20 students (and counting!) in just the past 2 years.

Drew graduated with a BM in Flute Performance at Brigham Young University, and continues his studies at Northwestern University, where he is projected to earn his MM in Flute Performance in 2018.

***My Vision***
I seek students who share a love of learning. I am not looking for the finest musicians or highest IQ's, because those gifts are not required to learn and grow. My greatest experiences as a tea
cher have come from when I work with students who just want to learn more.

***My Requirements***
Learning comes at a price, though. I hold my students to high expectations when it comes to practicing. Each week, I give students individual assignments that I know will improve their learning and playing abilities, and I expect those assignments to be fulfilled by the next lesson. A failure to do so will result in frustration for both myself and my student.

However, I know that nobody is perfect, and I myself have had my share of weeks where life happens, and I simply don't progress as much as I would like. As a teacher, I understand this perfectly, and I will always strive to listen to my students, and work with them through their difficulties or struggles.

***What To Expect From Lessons***
I bring a lot of energy to lessons! I am very passionate about teaching and helping students grow, and I make sure to bring that to every lesson. I give concise, direct feedback to students, making sure to give them the information they need to understand how they can achieve their goals and grow.

I am very perceptive of students' feelings, and I take care to be sensitive to their needs each week. My worst fear as a teacher is to cause hurt feelings, so I will do everything in my power to avoid that!

I am an expert in the field of music and the flute, so you can be rest assured that the quality of instruction will be the highest.

I take flute lessons from Drew. He is a real flutist with musical talent and technique. Not only that but he has such good eyes and ears to tell me what I am missing. My daughter had Drew as her first teacher for the 2015-2016 school year. He was excellent at explaining concepts and techniques to her as she began to learn the flute. He helped her to have fun as she learned. He is patient, knowledgeable, positive, and communicates concepts and expectations well. We would have loved to have him stay in the area and continue as her teacher.

I had the privilege of having Drew as my private flute teacher for the 2015-2016 school year, and I would have loved to remain his student if he hadn't moved. He's incredibly patient, thoughtful, and hardworking, and he helped me correct problems that previous teachers never even noticed. I improved in so many areas in a short period of time, including overall tone, physical technique, performance psychology, practice habits, and applying musicality to my performance. Easily the best teacher I've ever had.

I have never sung in public but it was always a dream of mine to be able to sing a solo in front of my family and friends for the holidays. I heard about Ms. Lydia through friends and asked her to teach me to sing. She gave me a free consultation to determine what my needs were and then set up a plan to help me reach my goals through the lessons that she gave me. My name is Claire and I have been making a living as a touring/gigging musician for the last eight years. I studied music performance and production at Columbia College Chicago. I have played in a variety of styles, both solo and as part of a band. I currently tour with my band, The Lucky Dutch on keys and vocals. My students start their journey learning music of their choice, sparking interest and enthusiasm from the very first lesson. My motto is "Relentless Positivity" and it shows in my lessons. There is never a consequence for a wrong answer or misplaced note and the worst thing that can happen is we play it again. We will work together to navigate this inspiring and often humbling path.

I've got little natural ability but I love to sing, a combination that means I pretty much sing alone in my car. In the dark. (haha) I knew I could improve, but the thought of taking lessons was so frightening that I put it off for decades. I wish I hadn't! Claire has a smart intuitive and always-positive style of teaching, honing in on just what I need to focus on to improve. Something else that helps me is to visualize what's happening when sound is made, and Claire is aware of the physicality behind a voice and describes it well. She's a really great communicator in addition to being a superbly knowledgeable and talented musician. If you've been putting off singing lessons out of fear or whatever, Claire's the teacher for you.

About Matthew
Music is something all of use as a form of vitality! It's something that humanity universally enjoys and participates in; whether it's through listening to music, attending a concert or actually playing, you are part of music.

I've always believed that anyone can develop musical talent once the correct learning environment is set up. Growing up learning the Suzuki Method, I combine these concepts with the many other vital ideas in violin pedagogy. When teaching, my responsibilities include inspiring the child and advising the parent so our goals can be accomplished during the week. I adapt my teaching style to suit the needs of each student, so I can keep my students interested in playing and motivated by their own accomplishments.

Learning the violin is dynamic and full of creativity and problem solving. We are at the same time d
isciplinarians, cheerleaders, poets, psychologists, and violinists. As a performer myself, I demonstrate frequently in front of my students. In fact, I will often choose passages that I can't play perfectly myself but that I am able to greatly improve right in front of their eyes. My goal in doing this is to show them how in a relatively short amount of time, but with immense focus, one can solve a problem.

Whether the violin is an interest, hobby or something you want to pursue professionally, I'll always give you the best advice and training to achieve your personal goals.

My current private students have had great success in studio recitals, auditions and becoming confident in their own musical ability. I'll always bring a positive and encouraging attitude to tackle any obstacle in your playing.
