Read my REVIEWS!! I specialize in working with beginners and teach foundation skills for using a sewing machine, following a pattern, handwork, and finishing.

I can help you make curtains, pillows, bags, aprons and other household items. If you want to make clothing, I will guide you through using a published pattern.

I have been sewing for over 30 years and was making my own clothes by the time I was in second grade. My lessons are not like reality TV. Projects take longer than you may think they will. I will work with you to properly construct a quality finished project.

Please note, I do not teach pattern making, draping, and advanced tailoring. My experience with serger/marrow machines is limited.

Students are expected to provide all tools and materials but I will help you find what you need for your project.

Recommend duration for in-person lessons is 90 minutes.

About Kim
For creative people and makers, crafting is like going to the gym. You will find great fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment if you set aside time on a regular basis to nurture this very important part of what makes you who you are. Think of me like a personal trainer. I will encourage and inspire you while you develop your skills and express yourself through a variety of textile based media.

Private and group lessons or classes are provided in locations around the NYC area, in my space or via webcam. My focus is on providing an entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable experience as you learn a leisure time activity. I am extremely patient and detail oriented. When you let me know what you would like to learn or make, I will guide you through everything from selecting materials to fine tuning your technique. Take a lesson with me to fi
nd out why my students love me.

Teaching is a wonderful extension of my work as a professional crochet and knit designer and technical editor. A web search will reveal some of my published work over the last decade. As a craft teacher in the NYC area for over 8 years, I have worked with individuals, groups and classes of all ages and skill levels. Most of my experience focuses on working with older adults and people with special needs. Minors must have a supervising adult present. I do not work with groups of young children.

I have studied the history and mastered the skills to make and teach a vast variety of textile techniques. Please see my experience.

If you are using this site without the assistance of a TL Rep, I recommend the schedule as you go option. I often have openings in my calendar sooner than the site allows. After we make contact, we can choose the best date and time.

*** Lesson Details ***
Please let me know what you would like to learn or make before your lesson so that we may be fully prepared with any materials, tools, equipment, books or handouts. Students are expected to provide all their own tools and materials unless other arrangements are made.

Recommended duration for in-person lessons is 90 minutes. A surcharge may be added for travel outside of areas accessible by one MTA fare or expected travel time exceeding 90 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
Textile based crafts including crochet, knitting, embroidery, sewing, patchwork, plastic canvas, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, bobbin lace, historic textile and costume conservation and storage, and more.

I also love to research and develop craft projects for classes or master techniques students would like to learn.

Exactly what I was looking for. My daughter had surgery last week and I wanted her to be able to learn to knit while she's at home for the next ten days. Kim was upbeat and clearly competent. She also went out of her way to help me (a leftie knitter) learn how to help my daughter if she ran into snags. Thank you, Kim!

I have been sewing for over 30 years and teaching for over 13 years. I am a Fashion Design graduate (FIDM) and can teach sewing, sewing machine care and basics, fabric cutting, using a pattern, pattern alterations, or pattern drafting, and draping.

I can also teach how to choose the proper fabric for your projects, and the different finishing techniques for hems.

I can customize the class to your needs and interests. I can teach you the making of garments, costumes, or home decoration items, or garment alterations.

It's up to you! I can't wait to teach you how to be proficient with your machine, and hand sewing.

About Marie
I have worked in Animation for over 20 years, from traditional 2D animation to computer, initially in Canada, in Montreal, more precisely. In '97, I was hired by the Walt Disney Animation Studio to train their animators on the computer. I taught computer animation software, mainly Maya, and Photoshop to hundreds of talented artists here in Burbank. I was also creating and writing teaching materials, so I am well versed in Word, and Illustrator.

My other passion is Fashion Design. I am a Fashion Design graduate from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising). I studied Fashion so I could make my own patterns. I have been sewing for over 30 years and just love creating clothing or costumes for my children and I, with commercial patterns or my own patterns. I am pretty crafty, really good at modifying patterns, and I have a grea
t knowledge of fabrics. I love fashion illustration and the whole process of creating a line.

I really enjoy teaching, and after years of teaching animation software, I craved teaching something more hands-on, and I have been enjoying teaching sewing and fashion design. It is rewarding to pass on a skill that used to be taught from generation to generation, but that less and less people are learning nowadays.

Whether it is for a hobby, to decorate your house, to prepare for design school, or to make your own clothes, I can teach you from the very basic sewing skills, to more advance topics such as modifying your patterns to make clothes that fit.

I've been sewing since I was 12 and I will share everything my Grandmother taught me. Basic sewing, your sewing machine, sewing with patterns, shopping for fabric and notions. Garment construction, alterations and what ever you'd like to learn to create beautiful clothing for yourself or your children. I spent time as a professional dressmaker and continue to make my clothing in my leisure. I love the craft and you will too!

About Carla
Learn to Sew! My Grandmother taught me how to sew one summer when I was 12 years old. I was hooked. From then, I began altering old clothes to make new pieces all during school, taking garments apart and putting them back together for a fresh look. I spent many years as a professional dressmaker and retail merchandising of designer sportswear. Learn to sew with me and have the looks you really want. Beginners, intermediate or an expert that wants to sharpen your skills.
