Guitar students start with five subjects. 1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument. 2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language. 3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language. 4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read? 5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. The student chooses what songs they want to play, guided by my suggestions; Jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, R &B - "How deep is the ocean, how high is the sky?" A beginning student will practice all these subjects as part of the daily practice routine. A half hour practice session will cover all subjects. Students that concentrate for thirty minutes a day four days a week make adequate progress. However, please know that very accomplished players devote a lot of time to each subject. These five subjects are developed and expanded as the student progresses. There are an infinite number of areas to explore, depending on the students interests, and can lead to a lifetime of learning and artistic expression.

I teach the basics of learning acoustic guitar technique including: Selecting an appropriate guitar for the student, correct holding of the guitar, finger and hand placement, guitar notes and scales, guitar tablature, reading and playing guitar chords, strumming and picking, playing guitar songs from most genres and music theory. I also teach electric bass guitar and ukulele, beginner through intermediate. I teach guitar in most genres of music (except hip-hop and rap). I have been playing acoustic guitar since I was 10 years old, and have a great deal of experience in playing most genres and techniques, I am used to accompanying groups of people in different settings on the guitar. I learned to play ukulele as one of my first instruments. I learned to play electric bass guitar in stage band and in a rock group in high school. I love the guitar and it is one of my favorite instruments because of its versatility.

Learning The Guitar in Gilbert

By Karen R. – Mesa Guitar Teacher

Do you enjoy listening to guitar music? Do you aspire to take guitar lessons in Gilbert to learn one of the most versatile and fun musical instruments? The great news for the Gilbert guitar student is that there are so many opportunities to hear guitarists of all types and levels in the Phoenix area who will inspire you and ignite your passion to start and stay on your incredible journey with the guitar! Let me tell you more.

The greater Phoenix metropolitan area is a hub of musical activities and venues, and it has many opportunities to watch, hear, and learn from amazing guitarists every week while taking guitar lessons in Gilbert. The Phoenix area has an extensive array of restaurants, coffee shops, and concert halls where guitarists of all levels perform all types of genres, including rock, bluegrass, country, classical, and spiritual (many are listed in the local paper, the Arizona Republic). Some larger music halls in the area include Celebrity Theatre, Gammage Auditorium, Higley Center for the Performing Arts, Talking Stick Resort, Desert Botanical Garden, and The Rhythm Room. These venues host many live local and international guitarists throughout the year.

Downtown Gilbert has musical artists performing every Thursday night (except for the summer) for free under the water tower in a series called “Under The Tower.” I also have attended and love the free 2nd Friday Night Out series in downtown Mesa (so close to Gilbert), where one can hear and see live music, walk around, visit local merchants, and check out other artist events. Smaller venues would be The Nash, Chicks With Picks (female guitarists), local coffee shops such as SoZo, and churches who host artists and musical groups.

The Gilbert area also has many places that host open mic nights where guitarists and other musicians of all levels can go to perform or cheer others on. These places include SoZo Coffeehouse, Inside the Bungalow, Lo Fi Coffee, Cup O’ Karma, and Yucca Tap Room, just to name a few. An open night mic at one of these venues is a great opportunity for anyone to gain experience performing in front of others and showcasing their talents. There is usually a supportive and friendly crowd that gathers there. I encourage my students to use as many opportunities as they can to perform in front of others, because the more they do, the more comfortable and confident they will be.

Additionally, one of the best places for guitar enthusiasts to learn about the origin and evolution of the guitar is the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). I have checked them out, and they have many events with guest guitarists. They also have rooms with collections of guitars in them. I do encourage my students to know and understand music history and how their instruments originated and evolved. Visiting this museum is another great way to inspire and encourage the guitar enthusiast.

Finally, as a long-time music teacher and lifetime musician, I recommend five things to musicians and beginner students - all beginning with the letter ‘P’:

  1. Participate in musical events and listen to music to inspire you and ignite your passion for music and your instrument. You can learn how other guitarists use technique to add meaning and flair to their songs and how they use stage presence to reach the crowd. This is how I have personally grown and been inspired as a musician.
  2. Practice as a way to progress on your instrument, but not to be perfect.
  3. Persevere until you reach your musical goals.
  4. Be patient with yourself, knowing that your musical journey is a process of daily growth and development.
  5. Be playful with music, and have fun.

I wish you the best during your guitar lessons in Gilbert!
