Melody is a wonderful piano teacher. She taught my daughter for 2 months before she moved. My daughter learned several pieces of music which she performed at the recital. It was her first recital and she was nervous but Melody encouraged her and gave her the confidence to perform!

I highly recommend Miss Melody as a piano and voice teacher for young children. She is very well respected. Her passion in teaching music is shown through her enthusiasm and patient approach. She has developed a program and teaching techniques that are always age and skill level appropriate. She encourages her students throughout the lesson, providing just the right amount of urging to keep trying and not give up. Her goal is to let the student enjoy and appreciate the art of playing and singing. My daughter has taken both the piano and voice lessons for 2 years and our family has joined 3 music recitals, all professionally done and very well prepared. I enrolled my 8 year old grand daughter and 10 year old grandson for piano and singing during their family visit with us, which lasted two weeks. Each of them had eight lessons in total and for that span of time they have learned how to read notes and count patiently. They also learned to play other instruments such as maracas, chimes, etc. It was so nice of Ms Melody to be able to conduct a studio mini recital just for the two of them. It is really amazing how my grandkids has learned so much from her. When I found out she is moving, I knew it will be hard to find somebody like her who is not just a very good teacher, but you can tell that she loves the kids and teaching comes very easy for her. Thank you Ms Melody for your good heart. As other reviewer said she will be missed, surely she will. I remember my grand daughter’s exact words when we left after their last lesson, ”Ms Melody is really very nice grandma. I like her so much!”

I was a piano major at UNI and received a B.A. in English with a minor in music. I taught music for several years in Iowa and Pennsylvania. I have an M.A. in Reading, which has been invaluable in analyzing learning styles and teaching to each student's strengths. I focus on learning the foundations of music as well as the technical skills needed to play piano. I gear the instruction towards finding patterns that make a piece more than a collection of notes and, thus, easier to learn.
I've used various curriculum: Alfred, Bastien, Faber, etc. and try to supplement materials with music that is appealing to the individual student.
I am very flexible with scheduling and try to make each lesson as stress-free and interesting
as possible.
In a few months a student should be able to read music and play simple melodies and chords.

Dr. Evan Meier is a composer living in Alexandria, VA. Born in Long Beach, CA he began his musical studies at an early age, performing on piano, French horn, trumpet, and steel drums. He wrote his first compositions for PanDrumonium - his middle-school steel drum ensemble. Later on, in high school, he continued to perform, in additional to writing songs and arrangements for various rock bands and jazz ensembles. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Evan decided to focus on classical composition - in 2007 he received his B.M. in music composition from Chapman University in California. During this time he also studied piano under the tutelage of Karen Knecht. He went on to receive his M.M. in music composition from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and his D.M.A in music composition from the University of Maryland.

Evan
's compositions have been featured in performances by the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, the Great Noise Ensemble, the Capital City Symphony, the Nimbus Ensemble, Nicholas Photinos of eighth blackbird, Paperwing, the Calyx Quartet, the University of Maryland Percussion Ensemble, the Youth Orchestra of Prince William County, the Mclean Youth Orchestra, and the Chapman University Wind Ensemble. Meier's Fire Music was selected for the Minnesota Orchestra's 2015 Composers Institute, and performed as part of the Future Classics program, with Osmo Vänskä conducting. Opera has been a major focus of Meier's compositional output. His one-act chamber opera, The Last Act of Revolution, was presented by New York City Opera's VOX Festival in the fall of 2012; it was premiered earlier that year by the University of Maryland Opera Studio. The New York Times described the opera as having "a very polished feel...the music firmly rooted in the drama." Since 2013, Meier has served as a resident artist with the American Lyric Theater, as part of the Composer/Librettist Development Program. In the spring of 2014, ALT presented his one-act chamber opera, The Resurrection Engine, which was written in collaboration with librettist and playwright E.M. Lewis. Meier and Lewis are currently at work on a family-friendly opera, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Fallen Giant, which has been commissioned by ALT.

Evan currently serves as the chair of the music theory department at Levine Music and has previously taught courses in music theory and sight singing at the University of Maryland, American University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Towson University, and Hood College. I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a few bands (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Rock). My undergraduate studies we
re completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, as well as various degrees of popular music.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

I played on a toy piano when I was very young, learning a bit of sight reading from my Mother, while listening to classical, jazz, and rock music. When I was 12, I learned guitar and later took private piano lessons from a prominent Philadelphia instructor. After playing in a rock band in high school, I went to college and received my degree in Physics. During this time, I joined a choir, and sang and played guitar in a contemporary vocal group where I became the lead guitarist and vocal arranger, and later became the director. I also played guitar in my church, as well as in a small folk group, performing music of the Beatles, Bacharach, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and many others. I also played or sung in a number of weddings during my college days.

Upon graduation, I moved to the DC area to work in the engineering field, while s
imultaneously pursuing my music ambition. I studied classical guitar at American University with a student of the great Andres Segovia, and also studied jazz guitar with a former student of a prominent jazz guitarist, Pat Martino. Additionally, I sang in choirs and studied composition privately with a prominent Washington area composer and performer from Catholic University, I also began to teach at an area performing arts academy.

My most long-term experiences in music have been serving in my local church for over 30 years, either playing guitar (acoustic, electric, bass), piano, or arranging vocals in a contemporary worship band. I also started a church choir, and led both choir and small orchestra in a number of special performances. Additionally, I led congregational worship in different scenarios. During this time I also taught students of all ages guitar, piano, and music theory, and have continued to today in helping students to find their musical potential and pursue their musical ambitions.

I have recently retired from my engineering career so I can use my musical gifts in my local church and teach music as a second career. I have completed my second degree at George Mason University, and continue to play with other musicians there. More importantly, I continue to learn how to better teach others of all ages how to grow in all aspects of music-making.

Having taught for many years, my approach is flexible and I can adjust my teaching style and/or curriculum to maximize the student's potential for learning at any age. I encourage disciplined practice while working to make learning music an enjoyable experience. Although I specialize in guitar styles, I also teach piano, and can include music theory, sight reading, composition, and how to improvise on any instrument. Christine's unique and highly effective approach to voice has allowed her to continue to help beginning to professional level students advance their technique with incredible results.

Christine is a master of vocal technique and focuses on properly diagnosing and addressing vocal
issues as well as integrating the body to fully support the voice.

She addresses vocal issues in a very practical and logical order by first identifying the primary source of the vocal issues and starting to work from there.

This is a simple, but crucial difference that is apparent in her approach. The very nature of secondary issues are that they are simply the extensions of the primary issues and therefore primary issues should really become the focus and starting point of the technical work.

It is from Christine’s experience and observation that she has concluded that secondary issues will always be dysfunctional (regardless of time and effort put into correcting them) as long as the primary issues have not been resolved. Oftentimes secondary issues will significantly self-correct on their own or can be approached more realistically once the primary source has been corrected.

This can only happen if the teacher knows this and is aware on how to approach the correct order in which to work and to address issues.

Making sense of primary versus secondary issues is absolutely fundamental to legitimately correcting problems successfully. Unfortunately it is often that the student is ultimately left to the enormous task of discovering this on their own, if ever and if they are lucky after years of study because the teacher is often focused on surface level issues, which are always easier to hear. Fundamental will be the focus regardless.

Most professionals are not versed in hearing such nuanced differences, nor capable to offer to work in such a refined manner.

The voice requires an execution of many things that must function together properly and in relation and respect of one another in order for it to work.

Considering this makes it is easy to understand why the voice is viewed as the most complicated instrument to diagnose and teach. Therefore, it is absolutely important to invest in teachers who greatly have a handle on the voice and how to go about making sense of it and work towards finding a balance.

She also specializes in teaching students process and development through highly mindful practices. She believes that in order for the voice to function optimally, the body, mind and emotional state of the singer must all be receptive and responsive in a positive way. This is because they are all inherently interconnected.

Christine teaches in a mindful manner to help students become more observant and aware of their own approach. By doing so we can realistically create the opportunity to arrive to better choices.

Christine’s extensive experience and knowledge in various styles and specialties in vocal intonation, along with her continuous education (over twenty years) and dedication to the authentic Italian traditions of bel canto and verismo opera has allowed for her to develop an approach that can extended into all legitimate styles of singing. Her personal approach to the voice is beyond comparison, nor can it be matched.

She has a phenomenal ear and can make rapid and highly accurate assessments of technical issues in a very brief sitting. Christine is exceptional at explaining vocal pedagogy and directing students on how to make corrections for themselves.

Christine is a dramatic coloratura soprano and is very confident and experienced with large instruments (that are more difficult to train for various reasons and require more specialized training). Having an extremely rare and large voice herself has given her invaluable insight toward fully understanding all other voice types and the discipline necessary to achieve efficient technique.

Many teachers can be limited in their view and teach "their technique" as opposed to helping the student develop their own technique and what works best for them. Christine has a great talent for figuring out what a students needs to do in their approach in order to achieve the results and keep the lessons progressive.

Developing proficient technique in a complete and effective way leads toward discovering the full capacity and beauty of our instrument without compromise. We need to find our voice to find ourselves as artist.

Her methods in vocal intonation translate directly and indirectly into all styles of legitimate singing, which she coaches many varying styles and will direct student toward appropriate repertoire. Students will learn the full potential of their instrument under her guidance. It is her belief that technique should always lead toward one sounding natural, no matter the style and that one fully learns their instrument’s capability to access endless artistic choices as a performer.

Christine offers very traditional based vocal lessons with a focus on improving technique through practical exercises and song repertoire designed for each student's unique vocal needs. She will offer necessary guidance and adjustments to ensure the student's continuous development.

Her goal is for her vocal students to discover their authentic voice and to find freedom in their technique and most importantly their expression as artists.

What you can expect to learn:

Vocal pedagogy and how the voice functions properly; how to effectively think about your voice to get the body to cooperate (aurally, physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.);

Integrating the body to fully support the voice Rebounding the body to continue to move the air efficiently. These are the basics of support, but often times very apparently neglected because most trained singers/teachers from even the highest institutions do not understand how it works or do it effectively themselves. It is sadly becoming a lost art. This is the most advanced concept of singing and yet is absolutely necessary to master in order to access genuine support. Christine clearly demonstrates and explains how this concept functions and her refinement of it is by far not common knowledge.

Other concepts include sustaining an open throat, creating a natural lifted and open internal space for better mix using the head voice and easier support, legitimate dynamics directed from the body and compressed air, anchoring the body to maintain the larynx low;

Various placement techniques, air that can rebound using breath direction and not from using the larynx inappropriately, centering the voice/cut internally by aligning the horizontal (mask) and vertical planes (chest, back of head, top of head and spine) support and placement that function together, developing a mixed middle sound that passes easily into low and high registers and broadens range; articulation free from the jaw and using tongue and other articulators as well as using breath direction to assist, posture that is conducive for support and keeps the body open and functional;

Various artistic and performance techniques, musical interpretation appropriate to context, time period and style, aligning the voice and body/acting to come across accurately in our portrayals and the process behind this, memorization techniques, execution of timing for expressive reasons and ways to think about timing that doesn’t conflict with the natural structure of a song, but allows for flexibility in phrasing, phrasal development and song development.

Piano:
Christine is also a highly sought out piano instructor for her ability to establish an exceptional foundation in beginning piano students and those who wish to continue their studies and build upon the fundamentals. She specializes in reading skills and excellent technique.

It is her belief that having a solid foundation sets the tone for determining if a student will continue with their studies and therefore this is the most vital part of a student's development and future progress.

She teaches Russian technique, which allows for flexibility, strength and tonal beauty of musical lines. This technique can be applied to all styles of playing piano such as pop, jazz and is not limited to just the classical repertoire.

Her goal is for all of her music students to become increasingly independent as musicians to where they feel confident to teach themselves and others and to ultimately find enjoyment in the process of learning music.

Her approach helps students advance their technique, reading proficiency, including music theory and expand their artistic capabilities.

Education and continuation of voice:

She received her music education in classical vocal performance from George Mason University and has vigiourously continued her studies in opera with Mrs. Fabiana Bravo, who studied with Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto and has had a fabulous career singing at the Met. She has learned the Italian bel canto traditions as well as the Russian approach to the style. Christine specializes in Italian for classical rep.

General styles I coach:
Opera (bel canto and verismo) classical, sacred, hymnal, traditional, jazz, r&b, folk, and other variations of these popular styles.

Christine also has an international recording career as an adult contemporary artist.

What do I expect from students who are seriously applying:

Those who are very hard working and prepared to work on what they NEED, not what they want. Those that are motivated, passionate, dedicated, responsible, considerate, humble and serious about lessons and greatly improving as musicians should apply only regardless of aspirations as a hobby or professionally.

The most important thing necessary to finding real progress I have found is if a student is fully prepared to work HONESTLY. We must always strive to work honestly with our technique. Issues cannot be corrected when we chose to continue to avoid them.

I strongly believe that music is a discipline and this is the manner in which it will be approached during lessons. This is a teacher-STUDENT effort. Taking responsibility for your part is a must. This includes trying to the best of your abilities to put my advice and guidance into practice away from lessons is necessary to your improvement.

I am looking for potential long-term students who are willing and ready to work hard in a practical and realistic manner, regardless of experience, learning needs or proficiency. It will not work long term if a student is not making the time or effort commitment to apply the work from our lessons at home.

Singing is a long-term sustained process to develop that can absolutely not be rushed and I want students who understand this. I have very limited availability and I am only seeking serious students who have a positive, professional attitude and will value me as a teacher. You need not know anything about voice, just have a good work ethic and attitude :)

I have some musical experience as a hobby (piano, violin, choral arts), so I can be somewhat critical when I meet musicians. I have to say, though, that Christine is an extremely talented vocalist and instructor - I daresay a vocal genius :) The way she describes and encourages understanding of abstract concepts about air direction and body support is very unique. While it remains technical, it also makes you think differently about your body in terms of physical and emotional space. If, like me, you're a technical-minded person in the more general sense, this kind of approach is helpful because you have to engage both sides of your brain. I'm always challenged at Christine's lessons, and there has been great improvement in my voice from 7 months of lessons with her. I'm also having fun in this process, which is why I continue to come back!

I highly recommend Christine. Give it a shot; you won't regret it.

Florentina is outstanding! She is incredible with my son, and I’m constantly amazed by how well he connects with her on the lessons. She is very professional, always on time and very communicative with regards to his homework and schedule. He’s now preformed both for family and friends, and also in front of an audience. He continues to enjoy and look forward to lessons. Florentina is highly recommended.

I am a versatile trombonist who has experience in many musical ensembles. These include orchestral, concert band, brass quintet, jazz band, jazz combo, brass band, and Marine Corps Band settings.
I am originally from Memphis, TN, but grew up in the small college town of Auburn, AL. I now reside in Northern Virginia and I am a Trombone Instrumentalist in the Quantico Marine Corps Band. In the band, I perform regularly in military ceremonies, as well as concert bands, brass bands, and brass quintets.
Before joining the Marine Corps, I studied with Dr. Matthew Wood of Auburn University. After my completion of Marine Corps Recruit Training and Marine Combat Training, I attended the Marine Detachment Naval School of Music. Here he studied with Mr. Ken Ebo. Voice students can expect to improve week to week in their vocal technique. I teach piano students of all different ages mostly beginner piano. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the

Senobia was knowledgeable and I appreciated her patience with my daughter as this was her first EVER vocal lesson. While my daughter was nervous, Senobia’s professional demeanor allowed my daughter to feel confident. She can’t wait for lesson 2.

Senobia, is a perfect teacher for my grandaughter. I only have mt grandaughter for 1 month and Senobia tailored her sessions to fit our needs and provide my grandaughter with the basics in singing along with pleasing songs to sing. My grandaughter will be able to build upon these lessons when she returns to her parents.

Music has been my life for as long as I can remember! I played saxophone all through school, participating in Solo & Ensemble, as well as All-County and All-State symphonic bands. As a student at CSM, I enjoy being a part of their Jazz Ensemble "Solid Brass", as well as their Latin Jazz group, "Ritmo Cache."
