My initial instruction follows the John Sprague school method, which focuses on precise articulation of ornamentation, leading into pipe band music.

Once a grounding in pipe band technique has been achieved, I can continue to work with students along the pipe band path through the intermediate level, or branch off into folk/kitchen piping, informed my extensive experience as a fiddler.

I am also willing to teach small pipe and border pipe students.

About Peter
I am a traditional Scottish musician specializing in 18th century music. I have studied Highland bag piping since 2001 and Scottish Fiddling since 2002 (with a background in classical violin). I teach
both Scottish Fiddle and Highland Bagpipes, as well as Scottish Small pipes and Border pipes.

I have supplemented these areas of knowledge by studying Gaelic since 2007 and ClĂ rsach (wire-strung harp) since 2012. I have performed with the Potomac Valley Scottish Fiddle Club and the City of Alexandria Pipes and Drums since 2004, for weddings and Scottish Country Dances since 2006, and founded the Scottish Folk-Acoustic band The Devil's Tailors in 2008, and lead the only DC-area open Scottish jam session. I also participate in a living history unit reenacting the 1745 rebellion in the Highlands, leading me to study the music's historical context.

My approach to Scottish traditional music is holistic; I feel it's important to experience how song feeds into instrumental music, and how the instrumental traditions interact with one another, and impart that broader view to my students. My focus is mostly on the folk traditions, though for bagpipe students, I teach the current and formal pipe band technique and repertoire as a foundation.

I have twice qualified for the US National Scottish Fiddling Championship, and was 4th place overall in Grade 4 Senior out of almost 850 pipers in 2006, and have been taking an extended hiatus from competition.

Peter is an outstanding instructor! He has a nice space for teaching and works to understand where the student is starting from - making sure to emphasize a base of fundamentals that will see you through for the rest of your piping career. I highly recommend him!

Peter is very patient and exceptionally knowledgeable. He is very analytical in his teaching. I am a new student (only a few lessons) and I am confident he will be able to provide the critical but positive instruction and encouragement that I need. His enthusiasm and passion for music is contagious. In fact, he gives detailed oral histories and music theory explanations related to the topic of the lesson. Most teachers boot you out when time is up - not Peter - he always finishes on the right note. Plus he has an adorable cat assistant, Rory, as a side kick.

I am a Retired Federal Special Agent and I was born in Glasgow, Scotland. I've always wanted to learn how to play the Highland Bagpipes. I met William a few years ago and he has made my dream come true. William is a caring and patient instructor. He will teach you all details and techniques of playing the instrument and how to play the tunes correctly. William will take a complicated piece of music and will show you an easy path to successful completion of of playing the tune. I have seen William teach all ages and genders and special needs students and all have been successful musicians. William has transformed this hard headed student from a person that could not read music to a performing as a band member with the Tucson Highlanders Pipe band. I STRONGLY recommend William as a Bagpipe Instructor.

William as been giving me lessons on the bagpipes since January of 2013, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. William's guidance, style, and skill have taken me from my first lesson on the practice chanter to my first public performances.

William has a easy-going, comfortable and capable style of teaching. He is comfortable adapting to each student's wants and needs rather than forcing each student to follow the same lessons and learning path. He has taught the bagpipes to students from all walks of life and ages.

I've been very happy with his training. I'm looking forward to continuing my training with him, and would recommend him to beginners and experienced musicians alike.
