A solid, artistic, and flexible piano technique from the beginning. One of the fundamental parts in learning to play piano is to learn the basics of piano technique, which includes proper posture of the body when sitting to play piano, proper fingers, hands, and arms position. The development of the arm and hand flexibility in order to learn the legato and staccato performance from the beginning of the piano studies.

Throughout my 20 years of teaching experience I have developed different methods for children and adults to build a flexible and artistic piano technique that has worked with all my students.

The proper use of the arm rotation, wrist flexibility and how the wrists and arms help to lead the direction of the phrases are fundamentals to attain a beautiful and rich tone .

About Jesus
Jesus has more than 15 years experience teaching piano and 5 years teaching the Suzuki piano method, with dozens of his students playing successfully in recitals, competitions, and auditions around the Chicago area.

He completed his Masters of Music in Piano Performance with a scholarship from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Il. Renowned Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio and Dr. Ludmila Lazard were his advisers and professors. In addition, during his program at Roosevelt University, Jesus took a course aimed at developing figure base and harpsichord performance with Dr. David Schrader.

In 2012 he was certified piano Suzuki teacher by the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Jesus performs solo recitals and lieder by Rachmaninoff, Shubert, and Schumann with his wife the soprano Darina Assenova in festivals such as “Shuberti
ade”, which is organized by Pianoforte Foundation in Chicago and Make Music Chicago.

He often performs in Cultural Festivals in Mexico and United States and has performed with major orchestras as a soloist and as accompanist.

All his piano students are active as performers. Jesus always encourages them to perform in public, looking for piano festivals, competitions, recitals, auditions and any opportunities where they can showcase their talent. His students have been accepted in pre-college music schools in Chicago.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on the basic piano technique skills when I start with a new student, it includes good posture of the body, good hand shape, firm fingertips, loose arm weight, good position of each finger, and flexible wrist. I always look for a rich tone production when playing each key of the keyboard in order to create a beautiful musical discourse throughout the piano piece.

When the student is from 3 to 6 years old I use the Suzuki method. When the student is older than 6 I combine the traditional and Suzuki method having great results with the student's performances.

My Philosophy: All my students learn to play piano in an artistry, confident, and joyful way.

My girls started taking lessons from Mr. Garcia at age 4. He is an excellent instructor and keeps lessons and weekly practice assignments fun and challenging. He uses a combination of methods to best suit the interests of each of my daughters. They really look forward to their weekly lessons. I have seen significant progress in their piano skills. Mr, Garcia is very good at acknowledging their accomplishments which is extremely important for young, beginning piano players. I highly recommend him.

For my younger guitar students, I use the Progressive Guitar Method for Young Beginners series. This book includes a CD to help the student practice at home. For my older guitar students I use a progressive guitar curriculum of my own creation.

For my voice students I use Pathways of Song, Hall Johnson Spirituals, 24 Italian Songs and Arias, Alfred's Folk Songs for Solo Singers, Carl Fisher's The Young Singer series as well as song materials based upon the student's personal interests, such as art songs and Broadway show tunes.

For my piano students I use the Piano Adventures series by Nancy and Randall Faber and the Alfred Piano Series. Music reading, ear training and theory is part of my instruction. With daily practice you will see a noticeable improvement in musicianship, aural skills and music-reading ability.

I am also an experienced tutor. I have worked with students of all ages and with various learning differences. I have tutored students in reading, writing, math, social studies, ESL and test preparation.

Through online instruction, I am available around the clock and around the globe for tutoring and music lessons.

For all other instruments, I recommend buying new for any brand that is not among the top 3 brands for that instrument...this ensures a working instrument in which to learn from and practice on without necessarily spending top dollar.

I teach beginner level piano only. And I teach very well with the little ones. We have lots and lots of fun on piano with books from Faber and Bastien. We explore the piano sounds, highs and lows, and find all the C's across the vast piano keyboard. We look for lots of interesting things the keyboard can do. I truly enjoy my little ones who take beginner piano with me. Learning piano young really helps to branch over into other instruments later in middle school and high school. I encourage all young children to start on piano first before seeking other instruments. A year of piano in a child's life is a lifetime of music education for the rest of the growing years!

My training started when I was very young, age 7, with piano lessons. Since then, I have been playing music my whole life, and I love it! I received my Bachelor's in Music Performance 2001, and will receive a Master's in Music Education in 2017. I am currently looking for students for my private studio for ages 5 - 75, in string instruments violin, viola, cello, and beginner piano!

I take very young students, ages 5 -7, on violin or piano, and I would love to get more of the little ones interested in music! The lessons are also a great "mommy and me time" format, a great way to spend time with your child! I have found lots of success with this age group, by using a curriculum that I have developed which is based on the Suzuki method mixed in with classical training and fiddle training. Although I am not Suzuki certified, I use conce
pts and materials taken from the master teacher, Suzuki. From studying his philosophy and principals through research, I have found the Suzuki method to be a very holistic and "easy-to-understand" teaching method for young ages.

For adult students, I have found success teaching a curriculum that just lets you play music and develop a love for your instrument. I mainly teach adults using lots of music from pop tunes, holiday music, fiddle and Americana music. My curriculum for adults is more about making music and less about playing scales and etudes, although focus on technique is integrated within the type of music books we use.

I also teach high school, middle school and elementary school students all instruments, violin, viola, and cello.
Students excel at a very high level with my training. This group will be asked to study music in the classical training method with scales, etudes, and standard classical repertoire, and help with their school orchestra music. Please inquire about training for this age group in person.

*** Lesson Details ***
Beginner lessons are great fun! Watch how the instrument turns into clay that molds to your hand, your musical talent. I love to see the amazement in the student when they realize playing a musical instrument is not as difficult as it may look. Each subsequent lesson is a building process, building upon the foundation from the previous lesson. It is imperative that students practice! Practice whenever you get a chance, even a little bit goes a long way. Pick up the violin for ten minutes while you wait for the meal to cook in the evening or waiting for the laundry to finish. Then, find some time to sit quietly in a comfortable space and focus just on the tone and quality of your playing.

After understanding a student's level and what their interests with piano are, I help the student pick a song or a piece to use for lessons that is according to those interests. After a student gains a good understanding of playing a song or a piece, I like to go over ways to change the dynamics (rhythm and note alterations) of the music to explore other kinds of expression through the piano. With this approach, my students may learn to bring logic (technique, scales, theory) and feeling (how the music is played) together. It is also a great introduction to improvisation.

I go over improvisation with students, if desired. This includes such concepts as playing comfortably with both hands, creating melodies, exploring the use of various scales and voice leading. Lastly, if desired, I can include singing in the lessons!

*In order to avoid an awkward schedule, I have limited my availability to a few evenings during the week. However, I am open to working another time that may work best for you.*

I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care. I have facilitated psycho-educational groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness as well. Lastly, I worked with college students at a local u

In this role, I help individuals develop their path of change, making sure motivation and focus is well-maintained. I provide a judgment-free and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect and process concerns as well as work towards making personal changes (e.g. self-actualization, career, anxiety management, lifestyle, life changes) from an existential perspective. My approach to personal development coaching is based on my therapeutic orientation called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key initiator of change. Awareness allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung (Analytical Psychology- particularly the Psychological Types) and Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy). ACADEMIC COACHING/STUDY SKILLS: Using my passion for education and my insight gained in my few years (so far) immersed in the world of education, I help students (grade school and college) develop areas of their academic life needing improvement. As suggested above, I help students develop time management, learning strategies, coping strategies for anxiety, and motivation (i.e. help them to see the value of learning). Though it is a valuable tool, it is presently not a service that is offered at most schools in the area.

WRITING: As a lover of reading and writing, I understand the value of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. As a writer, my focus is on creative writing (mostly short stories presently) and essays. Given my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences, I have written many academic papers, in APA format and in MLA format. I edit and revise papers as well as help individuals develop their writing voice, develop their ideas, develop an approach to structuring writing, maintain consistency with writing and provide genuine feedback. Beyond that, my help with writing is limited to the goals of the the individual.

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with those I work with. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. Also, I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing a story, living life, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

LASTLY, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred; and meeting at a student's location, depending on the preferred time and the distance.

I have to give Andrew 5 stars for the first lesson. He really cares about meeting goals specific to the person he is teaching. I have been playing music since I was 3 years old and have been teaching for the last 5 years. I set up every lesson plan to match what the student would like to learn as well as making sure to meet the parents goals and expectations. I work with all ages and all levels. I picked up music when I was very young and have never looked back. I started with the piano and then moved on to the violin, of which I competed regularly in up until high school. In high school I switched the viola and found it to me even more amazing. During high school I competed again in music between schools, the San Diego Youth Orchestra. I currently work with several students with special needs such as Autism and other Neurological delays. My son is Autistic and music was a great way for him to express himself. I found that the other children I work with on the spectrum have more abilities to express themselves through music then with words. I also work with students that are not yet comfortable with themselves and getting them to breath and enjoy the music helps bring them out of their shells.

My approach to teaching involves developing a comprehensive understanding of what one is doing while playing, rather than just learning a couple of songs, or relying solely on your muscle memory, you will be able to explain what you are doing from a theoretical standpoint.

Without getting too heavy with the use of technical terms, I will teach you to see the underlying threads that apply to all styles of music and encourage you to begin making these types of connections yourself.
This is an important skill to develop early so that as you progress you can begin to teach yourself develop your own unique stylistic approaches to music!

After studying at Laguardia High school for the Performing Arts, I attended McGill University in Montreal where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Jazz Piano Performance.

Born and raised in downtown Manhattan, I have studied music for over 15 years now. When I was about 8 years old I started studying classical piano, and to be perfectly honest, it was like pulling teeth to get me to play.
The repetitious nature of learning classical etude after etude wore down upon me at that young age and it was hard for me to focus on it.

Then I learned about the blues scale and picked up the electric guitar...
After starting to play some blues piano and studying with guitar player
Scott Sharrard of the Gregg Allman band, I started to really enjoy playing music.
I was also playing Trumpet in my middle school band (NYC Lab school) although the constant upkeep trumpet requires made it hard to study three instruments at once...

I proceeded to go to Laguardia High school where I decided to zero in on the piano, studying t
heory and piano technique extensively, and deciding to study jazz as well as classical music.
I began to compose my own tunes and study improvisation diligently, and ended up earning my Bachelor's degree from McGill University.
If you choose to study with me, I will guarantee that you will have fun and see music as more than just a sequence of abstract notes... you will learn how certain chord progressions imply certain emotional settings, and how to manipulate those progressions into creating a scene or narrative!

Now I have record my own jazz albums, and play keyboards in a rock band called "Caverns" based here in NYC.

Additionally, I am also fluent in Ableton and record my own electronic music which I am willing to teach, as it is an important skill in the 21st century music scene.
