Yana Giles has been the best piano teacher I have ever taken lessons from out of all 5 teachers I've had. She is patient, encouraging and motivational through every piece she assigns me. My appreciation for music grew an enormous amount after beginning lessons with her. My hand technique improved, as well as performance ability. I recommend her to anyone looking to learn the piano! Even if you have already learned the piano and wish to improve somehow, Yana will show you a new understanding of music that you never thought you could have.

Music Job History:
My music teaching/playing background includes: private piano instructor at home studio, elementary music teacher in Lewisville ISD and Odessa Public Schools, piano accompanist for middle school/high school band Solo Contests, and former church accompanist for Methodist churches. I accompany both Lakeview and Griffin choirs throughout the school year.
Was Elementary Principal at Owen Elementary, The Colony, Lewisville ISD
Personal Information:
Have 3 children, now ages 26, 27, and 29
Love gardening, reading, playing piano, ringing handbells.

I believe performing is an important part of music learning, so I schedule at least 2 recitals each year. Some of my adults prefer not to perform and that is okay too. I am a member of Carrollton Music Teachers Association and through this association are festival opp
ortunities 4 times a year for those students who are ready to play for a judge!. The more you perform, the easier it gets!

I believe that most people would say that they wish they could play the piano. Taking piano lessons keeps you practicing and working on improving your skills. I can always help a student to play better in some aspect of their playing. I break down skills into as small a step as needed so the student can understand what needs to be done. Reading music is similar to reading words, so sometimes the problem is not with the fingers being able to play, but what the student is seeing. I can take whatever series you are currently playing out of and move forward with you from that series.
Rhythm can often be a problem when playing and that usually is just a matter of getting that rhythm into your vocabulary and really hearing how it goes.
Fingering is another area that can be the reason that a passage is not working for you and I can help you figure those areas out. I always try to correct and help you improve by using humor and positive reinforcement. I have several books that work on technique in fun, short exercises that will apply to any songs or literature that you are working on.
We will spend some of every lesson sight reading (looking at music that you will practice at home). Improving your ability to read music at sight will make your piano playing more enjoyable for you.

As with any lessons, the more you practice, the more progress and fun you will have! Every student needs a spiral notebook that we will use to keep track of your lessons. I have found it best if I buy the books you need and then you pay me for the books - that keeps you from having to search at a music store for the correct books and I make sure you have the correct book/levels. If you prefer to find the books yourself, that will be fine also. I am flexible and want your piano playing years to be lifelong for you.

Right now I have students in Faber & Faber, Bastien, John Thompson, Schaum, David Carr Glover, Hal Leonard, FJH, Dozen a Day, and Alfred series.
I think that breaking skills down into small steps works well for mastery and understanding. I like to expand my students' appreciation of different types of music, from classical to pop, looking for music that is at the student's playing level.

I am mostly laid back, however, I do demand excellence and great tonal projection. For clarinet, I really like Klose's method, however, I use a lot of Rose Etudes, Voxman, etc. Sightreading is a focus in clarinet lessons as well as ear training and theoretical concepts such as building tetrachords, identifying major or minor intervals, familiarity with major and all forms of the minor scale as well. Special attention is given to hand position as well as noticing and achieving tonal excellence. For violin, special emphasis is placed upon proper bowing technique, left hand position, and ear training to improve intonation. Scales and arpeggios would be the building blocks to flawless technique. Method book that I prefer would include the Suzuki and Flesch methods. In all instruments that I teach, I also utilize You Tube videos to enhance the learning process.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect all students to have a stand and a metronome/tuner. With piano students I have a variety of educational games that make learning fun and easier. I usually travel with a whiteboard and manuscript paper in order to test music writing ability.

*** Specialties ***
I teach mainly in the classical genre....for Violin I like the Suzuki method, though I can teach through any method. I am aware of the freedom of jazz improvisation as well.

About Dustin
Hear me play! soundcloud.com/dbward/rachmaninoff

Dustin W. became interested in piano while growing up in a musical home. His eldest brother was an accomplished pianist from an early age so it was an easy choice for Dustin to also study music at age 8. Piano is something Dustin has always enjoyed. While in high school, Dustin not only played for the school choir but also played in the jazz band as well as sang bass in his school's Chamber ensemble. Dustin started playing piano in 1995.

While attending Pepperdine University in 2005 on full merit/music scholarship, Dustin began to give piano lessons to young students in the area as well as his fellow classmates who needed help on improving their performance. This allowed Dustin to hone his skills in teaching both beginner and advanced level students. Dustin has received several awards
for his piano performance ability, most namely his graduation from the California Certificate of Merit at age 18 as well as several other competitive awards in the concerto, Bach, and Sonata competitions. Currently, Dustin continues to practice 2-3 hours a day of piano to reinforce the skills learned through his piano career, as well as test out his new teaching ideas and musical interpretations. He mostly plays for his students as well as his young son Landon so his kids can grow up in a musical environment.

The highlight of his music career is being able to take what was taught to him by his favorite and very accomplished teacher, Mr. Krystrof Brzuza, and apply that to his own students. This helped him be a teacher to many wonderful students he picked up over the years. Dustin has also taught piano in Shanghai where he built up a full studio in 5 years. The saddest part for Dustin when leaving Shanghai was leaving his piano studio. Some of Dustin's students have gone on to study various majors with musical minors due to Dustin bringing out their love of music. Other students were much younger and would be left with another bright teacher in Shanghai. Having wonderful students is why he began teaching, having them grow to love music and continue music throughout their life is why he continues to teach. As long as he can help his students learn to not only enjoy music but to keep it with them their entire lives, then he know that he has been successful with that student whether they are 6 years old or 56 years old.

*** Lesson Details ***
For beginners to Intermediate I use the Bastien piano books which I have found have the best balance for teaching both technical ability as well as love of music and song.

For advanced students I focus on tailor-making the repertoire to fit what kind of music my student enjoys as well as will improve them in technical/musical areas that are lacking. Generally I follow the one from each of the major periods plan for older students, e.g. 1 Baroque, 1 Classical, 1 Romantic, 1 Contemporary. This gives each student a good exposure to different types of compositions as well as experience in playing varied types of music.

*** Specialties ***
While experienced in teaching young students to love music, Dustin specializes in taking intermediate students who are skilled and turning them into advanced Pianists who will both excel at piano performance as well as learn to love piano for the rest of their lives.

Music is soothing to the soul. It can calm us when anxious. It can teach young children focus, concentration and improve fine motor skills. I feel classical piano is a basic foundation to learn many instruments and types of music. I include theory and ear training with piano lessons. My goal is to try and turn on the student's love for music so that he or she wants to spend time at the piano at home improving skills.

About David
I have been teaching students and conducting groups of vocalists and instrumentalists for over 30 years. It’s one of my passions!

Why? Because I love the interaction with people, the camaraderie of making music together, the reward of everyone reaching for their potential and accomplishing things they might not achieve on their own!

My career in music has taken a many forms, such as Tour/Music Director for an international touring group called Celebrant Singers, Worship Arts Associate Pastor at Peoples Church in Fresno, California, and Pastor of Performing Arts at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas. I've also taught private lessons in public school (Northwest ISD and Carrollton-Farmer's Branch ISD) and in after-school string enrichment programs.

Regular comments from people I have worked with are:

“You inspire me to be a better perfo
rmer.”

“Patience is your weapon. The peace that surrounds you, then flows to us, allows us to stay positive and focused!”

“Your sweet spirit and gentle encouragement have created such a safe atmosphere.”

“I grew so much personally and professionally.”

“Some of my favorite practice times were in the rehearsal room!”

We will work hard in our lessons; learning an instrument takes commitment. At the same time, you'll grow and refine your skills as a musician. The effort you put in will be reflected in how you develop.

Music assignments (including region, all-state, and solo competition pieces) are designed to develop technique, teach basic music theory, and introduce musical literature characteristic of the cello.

If that sounds appealing to you, then let's get started!

David is an incredibly versatile musician, and offers a unique set of skills to his private lessons students from his vast experience in performing and teaching cello, as well as conducting, arranging and musical theater production. He is an excellent performer and is equally comfortable playing classical styles as he is playing popular music. Lastly, David is one of the most professional individuals I have ever worked with, and is a generous and kind-hearted person.

I began taking lessons with Mr. Schubert when I was four, and for the next nine years I was given a solid foundation of music theory while I learned my instrument. Being under his teaching helped me to develop a broader and deeper understanding of music and my instrument, which has opened many doors for me throughout the years. I am very thankful to have taken lessons from Mr. Schubert!
