    About Mary C.

I am energized by teaching. It is such a pleasure to watch students get excited about art, learn, and transform. I enjoy creating the fertile ground for them to find their own voice. The energy, passion and vitality the students bring to the table is something I love engaging with. I received my Bachelor's degree in painting and drawing from the University of Cincinnati. I then went on to the University of California at Davis where I received my Master's degree in painting. While there I had the opportunity to be Wayne Thiebaud's Teaching Assistant in descriptive drawing and color theory. I consider him to be one of the best painters and colorists in the world and it was truly an honor and eye-opening experience. I have taught at several universities in Ohio and California, and served as the Chair of the Painting Department at Ohio University in Athens. I have been teaching an occasional class at Chemeketa Community College in Salem for the past six years. My work has been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States. For the last two years one of my watercolors and one colored pencil drawing were chosen to be hanging in the Governor's Mansion in Columbus, Ohio for the Governor's art loan program. The classes I have taught in the past include foundations, painting and drawing from the Freshman to the Graduate level, Figure Drawing, Color Theory, Introduction to Art History, Installation Art and Senior and Graduate Seminars covering issues surrounding recent critical theory. Many of my students have been accepted at very prestigious programs such as Skowhegan, and MFA programs at Yale, Cal Arts, UI Champagne Urbana, Pratt, etc. I have seen several of my former students reviewed in Art Forum, The New York Times, Art in America and other art publications. One of them recreated her MFA show in a New York gallery and it was reviewed in the New York Times very positively. Other experiences that have impacted my teaching have included being on a committee at Ohio University that helped to restructure the foundations program. Within one year we could see positive results from this restructuring. I love teaching and look forward to working with you!!
