Be the Artist You Dream to Be with Painting Techniques from a Pro!

Become the artist you always wanted to be! Whether you are an aspiring artist, a total beginner, a kid who loves art, a teen building a competitive portfolio, or someone who's always wanted to learn to paint, I will help you develop your technical skills and find your voice as an artist! In our lessons, you will paint from life, exploring composition, concept, and mood through creative assignments. You will train your eye as you paint still lifes, landscapes, portraits, figures, abstractions, and beyond! I will show you examples of historical and contemporary painting as we practice a range of techniques. You will gain confidence through practice and experimentation as you work towards developing your own style as an artist! And most importantly, you’ll have fun! I can’t wait to work with you! *Due to Covid-19 I am temporarily not offering at-home travel lessons. All lessons will be online only until further notice.

About Kathy S.

I’m Kathy and I am a professional artist and art educator in New York! I received my Masters of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute and my Bachelors degree at Skidmore College. I make painting and textile-based 3D installations and have exhibited my work widely in the United States and abroad. I was a past artist in residence at Mass MoCA, the Vermont Studio Center, Recology, and the Lucid Art Foundation. I’m passionate about arts education, interdisciplinary thinking, art history, ecological stewardship, and color theory. I love teaching art! I’ve taught a variety of ages and skill levels and care about each student as an individual artist and human being. I design individualized lesson plans for each student with creative, engaging assignments that focus on technical skill, personal expression, and fun. I believe strongly in encouraging artistic growth through positive reinforcement. I love helping my students learn and grow as artists. I have lots of experience working with adults, teens and kids of all ages. I enjoy helping my little students learn, so if you're a parent or guardian who just wants your child to have fun with art and explore their own creative ideas, I'm the teacher for you! I’m passionate about art history and color theory. In our lessons, not only will you learn how to draw and paint, you will also learn the cultural history around the subject. I will show you historical and contemporary examples of artwork that fit thematically with our lessons. We will have engaging conversations about art while we draw and paint. My personal teaching style is patient, constructive, and encouraging. With practice and hard work, I can help you achieve your goals. Rather than enforcing strict rules, I focus on letting my students explore their creativity, build confidence, and work towards developing their own ideas. Other things I love include: Spending time in nature and playing with my cat! Have a question? Don't be shy, send me a message and let's get started! I currently teach online through the Take Lessons online teaching platform. Please send me a message before you sign up to make sure that our schedules work together! I can't wait to meet you!
