I am versed in Chord-melody, pick-and fingerstyle Jazz. I am comfortable teaching most contemporary styles of guitar playing, and the techniques required.

About Bernadette
I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.

I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.

I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.

Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.

For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.

My system of guitar training includes:

* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;

*
work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;

* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.

* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization

*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice;
*Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.

NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.

Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.

*** Lesson Details ***
My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.

After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.

Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.

NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.

The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.

The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.

For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

*** Specialties ***
Pick-style and finger-style guitar, both acoustic and electric; music reading, music theory; re-harmonization and arrangement techniques to make a song your own!

My 10 year old son has no musical knowledge what-so-ever. We wanted him to have some basics, and he was curious about the guitar. Sadly our family isn't musical and it's hard to know where to start. We were lucky to have engaged Stephen. His calm, patient, encouraging approach has been the perfect complement to my son's temperament.

When I overhear snippets of exchanges during their lesson I am excited that my son is making connections and having a conversation about what he's learning. I can't support his instruction because of my complete inability to read sheet music—so I am particularly pleased that he seems to be making observations and taking small steps towards understanding something that confounds me.

My son looks forward to his time with teacher and (so far) is interested in practicing too. Of course we'd recommend Stephen!

If you love All Rock, Blues, All Finger Styles, Soloing Electric and acoustic I am your man. These are the styles I do best and have fun while doing it. And of course classical if you want to go there...All while doing the songs YOU LOVE right away..I want you to have fun and while you do get musical knowledge to you. I believe the most fundamental place to begin is with theory. Through a creative, relaxed and patient environment I introduce students to the rudiments of music on 2 simple pages.
Theory helps you to understand song writing, ear training, and how to build chords and scales. I try to get you to hear the music so you can improvise better and also take songs and solos off CD's yourself, therefor becoming more self reliant to teach yourself in the future. About Albert
Twenty three years of performing and teaching experience. Specialty in Rock, Blues, Finger Style, Country, Folk, Classical, Funk and Punk. Bachelor of Arts in Classical Performance from Fredonia University. Proficient in theory, reading, composition and arranging, songwriting. Recording artist for hire and personal projects. Home studio in Highlands, NJ.

My Philosophy - Students First - My main goal is to create a comfortable atmosphere in which the student can proceed at his/her own pace. Whether you are looking to perform, do studio work, audition, be a songwriter or just learn a few songs for your own enjoyment. I am happy to create a custom program for you. I believe the most fundamental place to begin is with theory. Through a creative, relaxed and patient environment I introduce students to the rudiments of music on 2 simp
le pages. Theory helps you to understand song writing, ear training, and how to build chords and scales. I try to get you to hear the music so you can improvise better and also take songs and solos off CD's yourself, therefore becoming more self reliant to teach yourself in the future.

My students bring in the songs they like and by strengthening their ears and learning to apply theory points, I show them how they can figure out the song by ear the exact way it was written and played by the original artist. Therefore you can play with the CD as if you are a band member. This builds confidence to perform and record in any band at any level. As stated above, I will also customize a program for those interested in learning songs without the theory work so they can use the music to play songs as a nice relaxing past time.

Course Descriptions- Rock, Blues and Funk: You will quickly learn how chords and scales are developed using a condensed theory set up chart. This quick immersion in theory helps you to build a strong foundation while at the same time playing and enjoying the music. I have found in my years of teaching that making theory and music interactive from the beginning makes it more enjoyable to learn. You will learn all scales, chords, techniques, rhythms, and ear training specific to these styles of music. The advantage to this Teaching Format , especially in terms of solo scale playing, to progress much further and faster than if you were just learning how to play the songs. We then go straight to the CD's of your choice and learn from the best, the artists you've admired. Whether to learn their rhythms, solo lines, songwriting formats, melodies and harmonies, and all by ear. As a soloist, you will know enough about scales and chord theory and how to blend the two so you can make the guitar talk yourself. Still for those who want a quick song approach, we can get into playing a song and review its theory relevance when desired. (Recommend 1 hour lesson/week plus practice time)

Folk, Country and Bluegrass: As stated above, I begin with the condensed theory chart to understand chords of all types. Here we study rhythms of the above music forms including ballad, country blues and country folk. Through use of songs you enjoy, we study how the music was written and performed. You will learn in this course how to play music you love as it was done by the original artist. We begin with listening to the original soundtrack. Through the use of the ear we dissect the song and learn it in its original form piece by piece. This will also help set up the study of song writing. Understanding how artists Choose Chords, develop Melodies and Harmonies, and use the art of Modulation to bring you to and from different keys for effect. Transposing songs to fit your vocal range and Arranging songs to bring out their best. (Recommend 1 hour lesson/week plus practice time)

Finger Style: Great fun for those who would rather not sing but still want to play full songs on guitar. This style of guitar will blend the techniques of traditional finger picking artists along with our own on improvisation over twelve bar blues progressions and songs. You will learn to play all the parts, bass, melody, harmony and inside chords with your picking hand. Also how to create chord/melody arrangements from any melody.

Classical: Classical guitar is taught through developing standard reading skills, finger exercises and scale work while learning beautiful pieces at the same time.

Song Writing: Song writing always begins with an introduction to theory. From there you will study works from other artists to see how they Choose Chords, develop Melodies and Harmonies, and how they use the art of Modulation to bring you to and from different keys for effect. Choose a song and artist that you enjoy and we will dissect the piece learning the above techniques.

Children's Studies: The study of music has proven to enhance a child's concentration, mathematical and reading skills, self confidence, performance skills in all walks of life whether its playing the guitar, to public speaking, to playing sports.

I would recommend Albert for anyone looking to give guitar a try. I am 40 and had ZERO musical background, and always wanted to play guitar. I was attracted to the way a guitar would light up a room. Albert is the perfect guide to help unlock the mysteries of the guitar. Albert has created an extremely positive learning environment for me both during a lesson and at home. I feel like I take home another piece of the puzzle after each lesson.

Albert as a teacher.
The most notable quality to me is that he truly wants to see you learn guitar and enjoy playing. His attention to detail is great and is completely engaged in the lesson. He introduces music theory in just the right dose, and then shows you how it applies to what and how you are playing. He makes theory fun leaving you excited to unlock the next level. His depth of music knowledge is impressive, and an incredible asset for his students. Albert has a bright positive energy and I always look forward to my lessons with him. Alberts house is at the end of a quiet road across from the water and a marina. His Jam space is very Zen and his lovely wife is one of the nicest people I have ever met. Good vibes for sure. Sometimes I feel like I just left a yoga class lol. Albert is flexible with lesson times and very accommadating. I play the guitar every day and enjoy every moment of it. I have two guitars now (acoustic and electric) I am having fun learning and look forward to my next lesson. If your looking for a guitar guru Albert is a home run!

I agree with everything everyone else says about Albert so I don't want to repeat. I started with him when I retired (bucket list litem) and Albert is very patient and helpful ( as well as accommodating my uneven scheduling). You get into songs you like right away and learn technique within the songs as you go. He'll give you as much theory as you want. Shortly after you start with Albert you'll feel like your learning/ playing with a friend... I highly recommend him!

The reason Albert is the best instructor ever is that he is really gifted at his craft and at teaching. So many people can do one or the other. Albert makes it fun and instills a desire to practice, and balances theory/performance goals. He is college educated in music and will teach the fundamentals-having said that, he would make a great teacher for the advanced player as well.

Finally, he is the most patient teacher I know, a plus for you and/or your child. I would be pleased to talk personally to anyone considering Albert for lessons.

In addition to teaching fundamentals of music, I want to make sure that each student learns the type of music they enjoy listening to. I insist that my guitar students learn to read music. Reading music is so important because it gives you the power to be able to learn music on your own instead of relying on someone else. I also teach chords to nearly right from the start of the lessons, adapting some for smaller hands and fingers. Although it can be challenging at first, the work is well worth it. In just a few lessons, you could be playing the very songs you love to listen to!

About Stephanie
I have been happily playing music for 20 years, and now I have the opportunity to share my enthusiasm with you! I have been a public school music teacher for the last 8 years, primarily teaching elementary school instrumental music. I graduated from the University of Delaware Bachelor of Music, majoring in music education with a trombone concentration and minoring in classical guitar performance.

My musical journey started with guitar lessons at age 8. Although my degree is in classical music, I have played many genres of guitar, including pop, rock, and jazz, in many different settings. I've played with bands as well as solo material, so no matter what you want to learn, I will be able to shed some light on your path to being the kind of guitar player you want to be.

I have been playing brass instruments for a little over ten
years. I've played trombone in quite a variety of ensembles, including brass choirs, trombone choirs, wind ensembles, jazz bands, and brass quintets. I've spent four summers touring with a World Class Drum and Bugle Corps playing baritone and honing the fundamentals of great brass playing.

I know the guitar inside and out, and have a huge stylistic range. I can help you learn any song or style you're interested in.

About Mike
I'm Mike, and I'm thrilled to be part of the TakeLessons team. I first picked up the guitar at the age of 5, and have never looked back! I began formal Jazz training in high school and continued studying guitar and composition at Oberlin College and Wesleyan University. After graduating, I played Organ Trio and small combo jazz in LA, studied Brazilian and African percussion, and went to Japan to study Shamisen and Taiko drumming. I've been playing in various groups since arriving in NYC in 2005, and have recently been working on engineering and composing for film.

My strength lies in my versatility - I love music of all kinds. Whether it's Soul, Samba, or Salsa, Rock, Pop or Hip Hop, I am very good at communicating the mechanics of music so that my students not only learn to play, but learn to listen and write. I have a studio space i
n Manhattan as well as a small mixing studio in my Brooklyn apartment, and I'm happy to show students the ins and outs of recording along with theory and guitar technique.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music is fun!!! I strive for all my students to enjoy themselves, to have a great time learning about the world of music.
I use a song-based approach to guitar playing. Armed with just a small vocabulary of chords, you can play hundreds of great songs. My students will determine the course of their lesson plan by selecting songs they want to learn. While maintaining proper technique and effective practice methods, we will learn the fundamentals of the guitar by playing the music that we love. After 6 months, you will know all the basic chords, and the fundamentals of playing a solo. As lessons progress, you also learn song structure and some basic harmonic theory so you can begin creating on your own.

I have been playing professionally for over 30 years and have taught for over 10. I am proficient on keyboards, guitar, bass, ukelele, as well as lead and harmony vocals and songwriting. My focus is on developing your musical intuition through ear training, and accessing the music within. I have a home recording studio to help with the learning process. I provide a fun, safe, non-critical environment where you can access your inner musician in the most enjoyable way possible.

Many of my students have gone onto become prolific songwriters and musicians and have recorded albums. Even beginners can learn quickly from my method which emphasizes techniques for keeping learning music fun.

My 10th CD was released last year on Sojourn Records and was featured as NPR song of the day. Over the years my music has received much critical accl
aim as I have continued to tour the world. I have opened for legends such as David Bowie, Ron Sexsmith, Robyn Hitchcock, Morphine, Bob Mould, Freedy Johnston, among many others. I have produced over a dozen albums by other artists and songwriters, and composed for major motion pictures including last years film, WON’T BACK DOWN starring Maggie Gyllenhaal.

“In a career spanning more than 20 years, he has established himself as one of America's great under-the-radar songwriters. Had he emerged five decades back, he might have been a Tin Pan Alley stalwart, turning out intelligent, accessible songwriting with the clockwork genius of and Gary Goffin. His work is rife with the clever, incisive tunefulness that marked that era.”-- National Public Radio

Students can expect to discover or re-discover their love for music and and their own natural musical inclinations. Many students report an increased sense of joy and possibility in their own lives. Curriculum depends on level of student, but is focused on being able to play favorite songs, develop comfort and ease in playing style, and accessing creativity and originality in approach. After 3 to 6 months working with me, most students can feel comfortable calling themselves a musician!

*** Specialties ***
I teach mainly guitar, keyboards, ukelele, and voice from beginning up to intermediate. I try to incorporate songwriting into the process as i find that it speeds up the process and helps to encourage enthusiasm and a more focused effort and better results. I was really happy with my lesson with Ian. In the short time I was with him he managed to break down all the theory I had “known” before and turn it into something I really understood and could actually apply. I found myself listening to music in a completely new way the moment I left my lesson and was able to visualize the music itself more fully. Thank you Ian.
