About Gina
As of May 20th, 2018, I am in New York City again and will be accepting new students as well as reconnecting with anyone who wants to return.
I've completed two graduate degrees: one in Music and the other in Dance and Theater studies.
My undergrad degree is from The Juilliard School and it is in Dance.

I've taught children and grown ups for many years. I have a strong performing career and love the way teaching keeps me in a giving and learning place.

*** Lesson Details ***
With beginning students I am very laid back and patient and believe strongly that in the play of games and experiments technique will develop and manifest. As the student becomes more advanced I become more demanding as do the materials.

As an Acting teacher I have the capacity to take students along all the way to professional and beyond. I'm a membe
r of the Actors Studio, the performing unions and have studied since childhood at ACT and then all over the world including The National in London.

For Dance, I have a wide knowledge and can teach several forms as well as history and materials. In Juilliard I specialized in historical dance of the French Court which is also known as pre-ballet. At present I am studying Tango and other ballroom forms and can teach the beginning levels as well as help choreograph for weddings or events. Of course I also teach Ballet and many forms of Modern Dance. I adore teaching dance composition. To help a dance student make their own dances is very fulfilling.
For the Visual Arts I teach Abstract Painting as well as Installation and Performance Art.
*** Studio Equipment ***
I have supplies and space. Visual Art students need to contribute to materials by finding or purchasing whatever they like and adding to the mix. My students are welcome to use what I have here and I am always adding materials. Many people throw away materials that are perfectly good for art making so keep your eyes open and you'll find all kinds of good things. Visual Art students need to book a 2 hour minimum and I will lower the price if you just let me know you need it.

My fees: I start at a higher fee and after you've been a regular student we can lower the fee for you if you need.

*** Travel Equipment ***
just a space to work in - we can create a work space out of any space.

*** Specialties ***
In dance I teach classical ballet principles for beginners or those who are returning and want to work carefully and privately. I teach from the tradition of Alfredo Corvino's principles of relationship to organic forms and structures for sound development. I studied with Mr Corvino for years and continue to study with Ernesta Corvino.
For acting I teach a combination of classical acting technique with American sense memory and relaxation skills. I am well versed in the teachings of Lee Strasberg and then spent time in London to 'fill in the cracks' of my training with analytical skills as well as the various european influences that the Royal National embrace.
I teach creative discovery in combination with classical devices so the student can discover their own artistry while learning actual classical devices for accomplishing specific goals.

Gina is great! My 14 year old daughter loved her. She helped her work on several techniques and scenes in preparation for an audition. I would definitely recommend her for various levels of experience.
She loves the craft and it shows in her teaching. Shes tough but so loving and enthusiastic.

I have had the opportunity to learn acting with Gina and it has been great so far. When I signed up for the lessons, I signed up with Gina because of her credentials as I never had an encounter with her. From my first class itself she has taught me a lot about acting specially stage acting and that too with great enthusiasm. I now feel like pursuing it further. She is quite knowledgeable specially in her field and every moment that you are in the class with her, you are learning something new. I would highly recommend her, doesn't matter if you are just getting into the field or trying to set your advanced level stage, her talents will teach you something new that would take you to the next level. I hope you can take advantage of learning from a Great Artist like Gina.
P.S. She is a great Dancer and a great Musician.

Good Luck!

About Zachary
Dear Students and Parents:

My passion for performing and teaching brought me to TakeLessons as a way to enrich my immediate community (and beyond through Skype lessons!) and help individual students perform at their best. As an operatic performer, I thoroughly understand the importance of building a strong technical background for any level of singing or professional speaking. My other skills, like instrumental instruction, studying skills, accent reduction, and academic preparation are all offered through TakeLessons as well. As a teacher, I love having fun in lessons and building strong connections with my students at absolutely any level. My personal musical performing experiences span opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, and R&B. I am so excited to share my knowledge and passion for singing with you, as well as any other subject
we find to explore! As of February 2013, I am also available through TakeLessons' online instruction program! Please find more information below and I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks!

Zachary B.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

*** Lesson Details ***
Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. My greatest desire in teaching is to see you grow! So, if a challenging, yet comforting, work environment sounds like something you would like to try, consider scheduling a trial lesson with me. I am always happy to hear from new students!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Open area between the living room and the dining room, seating available, piano to accompany the voice lesson, garage/driveway/street parking.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I prefer for my students to have a keyboard or piano, and if possible, a music stand. We can always make a situation work if the student does not have access to these tools. I provide music, pencils, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I am an opera singer, and specialize in classical singing. However, I apply similar vocal technique to all genres of music, and focus on breathing technique, body and energy awareness, and discuss a holistic approach to singing with all students.

Festival as well as toured to the International Theater Festival in Porsgrunn, Norway and recently in Sydney, Australia at The Horse’s Mouth solo theater festival in 2013. Monica earned her BFA in Drama from the Experimental Theatre Wing and MA in Educational Theatre at NYU and has taught in Thailand, Greece, India, Australia, trained in Amsterdam, at the Grotowski Center in Poland and finished her Masters at Trinity College in Dublin. Monica  H. teaches Physical Storytelling and performs in NY and across the world with her own shows. She has performed with LesFreresCorbusier, International WOW, Scott Lyons and Co. and The Living Theatre. Monica is also a dedicated activist working with Time’s-Up!, Occupy The Pipeline, Rev. Billy and The Church of Stop Shopping, Occupy Wall Street and bicycle dance troupe- NYBikeDance. Monica’s creative direct action techniques within the OWS movement have been featured in the documentary film, “Everyday Rebellion” by the Riahi Brothers. Take a class with her! Lessons are very physical explorations where actors have the chance to break out of old habits and try new things, to work in a free and safe environment.

*** Lesson Details ***
Get in your body! Free yourself up to become a more flexible, aware and impulsive actor.

The class will utilize various physical theater techniques including Viewpoints, Grotowski’s plastiques and corporals, improvisation, clowning, Linklater vocal techniques, dance and my own brand of developing solo material to explore the world of the participants' stories, monologues and other materials. We will approach each piece physically, finding the specifics, emotion, story, characters and action within our bodies and rely on the genius of impulse to set free new discoveries. Participants will examine how playing with physical forms, experimenting with time and space and exhausting your usual acting safety’s can reveal the truth and inner life of the story that celebrate your individuality and unique choices. How you tell this story/ monologue is different than how anyone else can tell it. We will create a safe environment in which to take risks and break out of old patterns, clichés and stereotypes.

Testimonials from Students:
"Monica is a wonderful teacher. She creates an open and trusting environment. In the one day workshop I attended, I thought the day was structured very well with a perfect balance of exercises that were achievable and challenging and an afternoon of opportunities to expore the craft of storytelling."
- Claudia Barrie
(participant in Horse's Mouth Theater Festival Workshop in Sydney, Australia)

"I saw and experienced first hand that the body & imagery work that Monica does so well truly does work and is very effective. She created a safe environment where I was able to physically manifest all of my wildest dreams. No matter how badly my day is going, her class lifts me up. Monica has fire, passion, an extraordinary sense of play, a wonderful sense of humor, and beautiful insight to teach and inspire all of us."
-Ben Curtis

"I had a really amazing time. It was important for me as an out of work actor to remind myself how important it is to always keep moving. Keeping yourself fit is very important in our line of work but also keeping up physical exploration. I benefited mostly from realizing how much information and material is stored in our physical body and how it can lay dormant unless your discipline yourself to let it out to play. play with yourself more often and art will flow. Thank You Monica."
- Jessika D. Williams

"Monica's Physical Storytelling workshop is a blast! She'll make you sweat and feel and explore and ponder. If you give yourself to the work, you'll discover varieties of personal subjectivity, that will astonish and help create compelling theater."
-Peter Haywood

A great way to gain confidence and sharpen your physical theatre skills!

Monica creates a safe, inviting space that allows participants to keep an open heart and take risks! Monica gave me a better understanding of Grotowski methods and the purpose of the tools we learned. I loved the way she incorporated viewpoints into the workshop. I gained a better understanding of how I can use my body as a means to communicate story and emotion. The class was physically challenging in the best way possible. I learned some great vocal warm-ups and even some great forward and side rolls (which I never thought I could do!) I left feeling revitalized and inspired to create new work and breathe some life into my current work.

A born teacher

Monica is a born teacher just as she is a born actor. (It's hardly inevitable for one to also be the other.) I was skeptical at first, but I found the exercise liberating. I've never been so out of breath! However, Monica understood and accepted my limits, which is cool, and she relates to her students emotionally, which is better than cool. Her method for teaching actors is not the only viable method or even necessarily the best, but she makes it work for her.

About Amanda
I am currently dancing with the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company and on faculty teaching at the Paul Taylor School. While maintaining a professional dance career in New York City, I have been passionate about teaching dance for the past 9 years.

I have taught Master Classes and Intensive Workshops in the Paul Taylor style throughout the nation, as well as teaching Vaganova Ballet at the Joffrey Ballet School. I have taught in numerous public schools through teaching residencies with Rioult Dance Company and Education In Dance. I believe these experiences have taught me how to assess individuals quickly and provide clear feedback in a positive and supportive way.

My teaching style is energetic, and focused on the personal experience each dancer is having, while giving direct and clear feedback. My goal is to help students reach their art
istic potential in their dancing by helping to combine technique with lyricism, rhythmic dynamics and emotive qualities.

Private lessons can be catered toward each individual. Either for an upcoming audition, feedback on solo or ensemble choreography, to help personalize technical corrections and to help push technique to a higher level, or for non dancers to help understand movement and feel comfortable in a beginning class.

About Kevin
In my heart, I'm a huge magic nerd, which is why I love working with students and helping them develop both as technicians and performers. In the five years that I've been teaching lessons, I've helped my students construct routines for their school talent shows, create close-up magic shows for their families, and even pass auditions into reputable magic organizations and shows. While the secrets to magic are all over the internet, I'm very detail oriented, so in lessons, I focus on the "real-work" of magic. I make sure that you don't just learn the general idea of a trick, but you learn the important details about where to put your pinky, how to block angles, where to shift your gaze, and how to create a magical experience. Magic can be frustrating since secrecy is at odds with learning, which is why a teacher is vital for magical develo
pment.

Kevin Kapinos is a Brooklyn, NY based magician and card expert. Upon his moving from Chicago to New York in 2014, he quickly became a regular performer on A Taste of Magic and Monday Night Magic, New York's two highest rated and longest running magic shows. In Chicago he won the Alliance of Chicago Entertainers Close Up Competition, and in 2017 he became the youngest magician to ever win Magician of the Year from the New York Magic Enclave. Aside from his own performances, Kevin is also a consultant and creator for other magicians, and is currently consulting on Joshua Jay's Off-Broadway show "Six Impossible Things".
