Music Theory

For high school, college, and beginning/intermediate level adults who are seeking depth as well as variety  -  perhaps with composing in mind as well - I am a classical, jazz, and world music composer/recording artist/professional performer.  My focus as a teacher is to promote fun, enjoyment, and well-being for both myself and my students.  Music study is all about exploration, discovery, and enjoying the process of learning.

 My diverse music career began with traditional classical and grew to include professional performance in mainstream jazz and in-depth studies with the traditional drum masters of Senegal, West Africa. 

In the jazz field, I have performed with the legendary saxophonist Illinois Jacquet (who said about me: "Boss of the Drums!"), top saxophonist/composer Don Braden, jazz guitarist Gray Sargent (toured with Tony Bennett), Lisbeth Scott (award-winning vocalist/film composer), and National Book award Finalist, poet Linda Pastan. I have also jammed in workshops with Wynton Marsalis and Lester Bowie. In addition, for some 30 years, I have studied, performed and recorded with prolific multi-genre renowned composer, Mary Watkins (academy award nominated for three documentary films).

As a band leader, I have composed, arranged for, rehearsed, and directed a 16 piece big band! I have also written and recorded music for several award-winning films, and have written and recorded original music for several dance companies.

As a recording artist, my second jazz CD was chosen in the "Top Ten Picks of 2004" on a major metropolitan area's main jazz station.

As a music educator, I received many unsolicited enthusiastic reviews from Harvard undergrads which set the stage for a "Certificate for Excellence in Teaching" at Harvard University. Beyond academia, since high school days, I have been a music community organizer to provide platforms for my private students and community members, alike.

As an active composer, recording artist, performer, and live concert producer, I include those skills and perspectives in lessons for students at all levels.

 It's too good to keep all to myself, so I teach in order to share the joy.

This class will be a guaranteed fun introduction to the language of western musical scales. Scale notes such as C, D, E are also assigned Arabic numbers, such as 1, 2, 3 depending on what scale we are using. 1 is always the first note of the scale. For instance, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star would be sung 1-1-5-5-6-6-5---4-4-3-3-2-2-1---.
Get the picture? We will bring in favorite songs and challenge each other to figure out the scale numbers. Some of the brilliant Beatle songs are incredible! Bring your song list and your friends!

I am a parent.  Joyce taught/teaches my eldest daughter piano, ukelele, acoustic and electrical guitar.  She also taught my youngest daughter the clarinet.  She was an excellent teacher to both girls.  They learned to play their instruments excellently.  Joyce was and is also an excellent mentor to them as well as a wonderful person.

I have studied piano, African drumming, stick drumming, and composition with Joyce. She's a wonderful teacher and teaches so many instruments! She teaches with heart, with skill, and with an understanding of the student's needs, and she guides and instructs with enthusiasm and generosity. She's an extremely accomplished musician and creative teacher. Fun to learn from/with. Highly recommended!
