Paul W.

Chicago, IL

About Paul

I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it
on to someone else to experience. I believe this is one way you can leave your mark in music. I believe the experience I have playing in bands, and learning songs with my ability of having relative pitch will make my students improve quicker. I am also a very skilled sight reader and can recognize key signatures and musical notation. I’ve also been playing electric bass guitar for 13 years now and have the same skill set as my guitar playing. In fact I am hired to perform more often as a bassist than a guitarist.
I went to Columbia College between 2000-2003 and I completed a Bachelor Arts in Music, Concentration: Instrument Performance.
I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants.
Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.
If you just want to learn music theory or how to write a song, I can teach you all that and more.
I will teach you how to read music but if you don't wan't to do that, I will teach you how to read tablature.
I'll push you to learn your instrument and to practice but I won't force to practice anything that you are not interested in.
After about 3-6 months of lessons with me you will be able to play songs that you wanted to learn and you will also know all the essential fun basics of your instrument.
Learning the guitar or bass is fun! And as your teacher I will make you want to practice.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons will be downstairs which has music stands, guitars, cords and books.

*** Travel Equipment ***
My guitar and music stand. They should have a guitar and an amp if needed.

*** Specialties ***
Anything from classic rock to blues, jazz, classical, modern rock, punk rock, music theory, improvising and songwriting.

I started with Paul about 6-8 weeks back and i am already starting to play some famous songs. which is great for motivation. He can mold the class as you desire based on your choice of music and style of learning. He is a wonderful teacher for all age groups. I would recommend taking lessons with him.

I'm writing this because honestly, I would not be where i am today without the guidance and teachings of Paul. His ability to bridge the gap between technique and style is truly priceless & continues to reward me a decade after taking lessons with him. As a touring musician, I owe a lot of my understanding of music to him. Thank you Paul!

Teresa L.

Ingleside, IL

About Teresa

I am a graduate of Northern IL University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. I have 22 years of teaching experience where I have traveled to the homes. Students enjoy my passion that I have with the instrument.

I started teaching in 1991 and have been teaching several students since then. Attending teacher workshops keep me at a current updated level and I want to help the students learn to the best of their potential.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very thorough in my teaching, which includes lesson, theory, technique, and performance
methods. I use a very easy, flexible
approach when it comes to the kids and their personalities. I expect a lot out of my students, yet still want them to learn and have fun.
After three months with me, they will have learned how my teaching style is and will be able to play several children's songs.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I don't provide any equipment when I travel except their books for the first lesson. I would expect the student to have a well tuned piano or a basic keyboard. The student also needs a notebook so I can write their homework down for them as well as myself to keep track of where the student is in their progress.[

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching Alfred, Bastien, and Faber and Faber. I teach General Music, Classical, Jazz, and Popular. I teach mainly through the method books, and then use other supplementary materials as well..

Jack G.

Lake Zurich, IL

About Jack

Hello students and parents, music has been a big part of my life since before I could walk. Starting in third grade, and continuing through college, I have had 15 years of experience with singing. I was always eager to make music and to grow as a musician, which is why I decided to study music education at Eastern Illinois University. Due to the limited number of teaching jobs available I decided to change programs and study counseling. However I made it a priority to find ways to keep music as a big part of my life.

Performing has been a big part of my life for years. Starting in Elementar
y school I have been in several musicals and plays. I know what it is like to sing in front of large crowds both as a group and as a soloist. One of my favorite groups was an acapella/vocal jazz group during my high school years. My hope is to pass on both my passion for performance and the practical skills needed by every performer.

I have been teaching private guitar and singing lessons for the past 9 years. I have had approximately 10 students during that time, ranging in age from 11 to 60 years old. I have a fun and laid back approach to teaching. Music is meant to be enjoyed and I want my students to have fun as they learn and grow as musicians. While I have some basic skills for all my students to learn, the primary focus of lessons is for students to set and attain their own goals.

I know what it is like to be a student. I took private voice lessons for 7 years, including 3 years of classical training at Eastern Illinois University. I took four years of private guitar lessons, and one year of electrical bass lessons. As a teacher I use my experience as a student to enhance the learning environment for my students.

One of my favorite things is writing and recording my own songs. I will offer the opportunity for any of my students to develop songwriting skills and even record their creations.

There is no greater joy than that of creating music. Come create music with me and you'll be a better musician for it. I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your goals.

*In Song*
-Jack G.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am highly adaptive as an instructor. I will allow my students to bring their own materials or I will create custom materials designed to develop their skills and help them reach their goals. A lot of my custom exercises are designed to build the flexibility, strength, and agility of my students as musicians.

After several months of lessons I aim for my students to master the basic skills, and to be focused on personal goals in their development as a musician. I use audio recording to mark and measure student progress so you can hear how you have improved and find new ways to get better.

Lessons can be as laid back or intense as you want. Practice is key to improvement. The more you practice the more you improve. I realize that life can be busy, so if you can't get the practice in I will still work with you and help you get as much as possible out of our lesson time. However, I will always encourage my students to practice regularly.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Keyboard, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Bass, Electric Guitar, Recording software.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Keyboard, Guitars, Bass, and Mandolin.

*** Specialties ***
For singing and guitar I design a lot of my own materials. I have strength and coordination exercises for the guitar, and I have vocal exercises designed to increase vocal strength and confidence.

Jack is a great instructor. Each week we have worked together I can see the improvement in my voice. Jack also is great about tailoring the instruction to benefit the individual student rather than simply following a "one size fits all" approach. I definitely recommend his instruction to everyone.

About Jeremie

I just graduated from Columbia College Chicago in May 2014 with a BA in Music Composition. I studied under composers: Drew Baker, Kenn Kumpf, Ilya Levinson, and Marcos Balter. I've had performances and worked with members from the groups, Del Niente and Chicago's Composer's Collective.

I'm an "older" adult who wants to learn to play the ukulele. I have very little experience in reading or playing music. Jeremie was super in starting from my point of comfort. I'm very pleased with my 1st lesson and looking forward to more lessons.

For a first lesson, I was impressed and very excited to begin playing the guitar. The lesson started with Jeremie understanding what I already knew and then going forward from there instead of going over things that I already knew. So the time was well spent on actually learning something new. Looking forward to our next lesson.

Michelle Kei I.

Arlington Heights, IL

About Michelle Kei

Michelle Kei I., a soprano of Japanese and American heritage, "uses her strong dramatic soprano to slice through the orchestra" in a varied repertoire that encompasses Verismo to Broadway. Possessing a captivating stage presence and praised as "superb," "gifted," and a "constant breakaway from the rest of the vocal pack," she has entertained audiences on stages around the world.

Those are the first two sentences of my professional biography. I thought I'd use them to get the ball rolling.

Ever since I can remember, I've always been a performer. I come from a very musical family. I was al
ways singing! I sang at home, in church, in show-choir and musicals at school - basically anywhere I could find an audience!

When I decided to go to college to study music, I chose the prestigious School of Music at Indiana University. I wanted to sing Broadway, but my father encouraged me to study classical singing first, so I'd have the foundations for a bulletproof technique that could endure a long and demanding career. I'm so glad that he did!

Who would have thought that I would learn to LOVE opera?!? It had everything that Broadway did, and so much more! Plus, I learned to fill a theater with the sound of my voice and soar over the orchestra WITHOUT A MICROPHONE!!!

Would you like to learn how to do that? I can show you how.

Let me help you find your REAL VOICE!!!

What you can expect from me:

- I will provide a supportive and effective work environment.

- I will make recommendations on repertoire based upon your goals

- I will provide you with an individualized regimen of study based upon your strengths and development, not a standardized format of study.

What I expect from you:

- Learn the musical selections we choose. Your lesson time should be used for improving your technique, not learning your music.

- Leave your outside life at the door. It will be waiting for you when you leave.

- Enjoy the process. Experiment. If it doesn't work, try something else. Take constructive criticism as an opportunity for improvement, not as a personal attack.

- Commit yourself fully! Be engaged. The benefit you receive is equal to the work you put into the process.

When I signed up for vocal training through TakeLessons, I thought I would take a few lessons to improve my singing voice. I had no idea that voice training with Michelle Kei Ishuu and Robert Taylor would be such a fun and productive adventure. Michelle and Robert, both highly talented classically trained professionals, are a terrific husband and wife team who pack a wallop with each lesson. Michelle is pure joy and coaches from the heart to bring out the best in her students. After only a few lessons, my vocal range has expanded and I sing with more confidence. Robert has a very keen ear and always suggests the perfect technique to improve my tone and vocal quality. Together they provide excellent vocal training. I can't wait to continue with my lessons to see how far I can go. If you want to advance quickly and really enjoy the experience, Michelle and Robert will be the perfect teachers for you.

We are so glad we decided to get lessons with Michelle Kei and her partner Robert. They both are such talented performers and teachers and have made vocal training a wonderful experience for my teen daughter. Michelle and Robert and warm and extremely supportive people who teach with enthusiasm and a clear focus on the learner's priorities. My daughter needed coaching to prepare for an audition and earned the lead in the show! Michelle and Robert supported my daughter all along the way from the rehearsal period until performance week. I never imagined we would fine such wonderful and dedicated teachers on the internet. We are so glad we used TakeLessons to find them!
