About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***

We were in a tough position getting ready for a performance that we were not prepared for. It was a big help to have a few sessions with Thomas.

My son was very nervous about his first online lesson. His instructor had him start right in on the lesson, which helped my son quickly get over his nerves. By the end of the lesson, he was all smiles and feeling very confident about his ability to play a very hard piece for his solo contest. He is looking forward to his next lesson.

I am a professional full time Trombonist. At the same time, teaching has always been a big part of who I am - I love teaching. My music career has taken me around the world and back but more than that it has given me a wonderful tool of self expression, and for that I am forever grateful. My band performs regularly in Opera houses as well as coffee houses... Other than the Trombone I do play the Trumpet as well, and I have over 8 years of Piano under my belt.

About Reut
Hello there!

I am a trombonist and teacher, with many years of experience teaching Hebrew as well as music.

As a music teacher I have worked with children starting from private lessons to young children beginning to learn, up to master classes in universities worldwide. I love teaching, and I feel confident teaching trombone and trumpet up to advanced level. For piano, I would prefer to stay with beginners and young ones only :) - but I promise you they will have a wonderful experience (and yes, I do have 8 years of piano studies under my belt).

As a Hebrew teacher, I teach both Hebrew reading and pronunciation and modern conversational Hebrew. My professional experience includes teaching at Golda Och Academy in West Orange, B'nai Abraham in Livingston, Central Synagogue in Manhattan and more, as well as many private lessons. In
the schools I provided classroom instruction, private and group tutoring and adult education as well as private instruction for the faculty.

With patience and persistence, any child can be a stellar musician. My goal as a teacher is to help each person realize their potential in order to become a confident and consistent musician.

I have been playing trombone, and more specifically, bass trombone, for over 20 years. I have studied trombone at New Mexico State University with Dr. Allan Kaplan, and at CalArts with James Miller of the LA Philharmonic. I have played, performed and recorded professionally with choirs, theater productions, jazz bands, marching and concert bands, symphony orchestras, small ensembles, and brass bands all over the world.

I work to make my lessons enjoyable AND engaging. I will spend time with you on fundamentals such as key and scale studies, tuning, functional harmony, breathing studies, arpeggios, mouthpiece studies, rhythm and counting exercises all the way into more difficult materials such as extending your range, melodic and improvisation skills, single- and double-valve studies, and even into extended techniques, such as multiphonics, split tones, circular breathing, quarter tonal methods and more.

About Tyler
Hi, I'm Tyler! Born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico, I am the son of a band director. That being said, I have literally been involved in music since I was an infant! I played trombone, bass trombone, and bass guitar all the way through high school, and went to New Mexico State University where I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music, and then moved to Los Angeles, California, where I received my Master's Degree at California Institute of the Arts, where I also learned to play the other brass instruments, as well as composition and arranging.

Throughout my career, I've been able to do some great things with music. I have been able to travel Europe and work with one of the world's finest brass instrument manufacturers, Michael Rath, I have toured Colombia with my University's Wind Ensemble, I've recorded at Capitol Records in Hollywo
od, and have written and premiered numerous works for orchestra and rock ensemble, trombone choirs, and even a duet for quarter tone trumpets!

I have an affinity for modern and avant garde music, but am well-versed in all genres and musical styles! I also like to play in and record rock and roll bands, I've amassed a quite a few years of recording experience as well. From gypsy bands to thrash metal groups, I've recorded a wide array of music.

I also taught in the classroom from grades k-12 for a few years before following my true passion of teaching privately. I love to reach you at your own level and work to grow with you from there.

My goal is simple: I simply want you to come to love music as much as I do, if not more! I strive to give you the tools to become a successful musician in your own right, and I work to keep my lessons fun and engaging.

I feel like I learned a lot in an hour and he really helped me find an anchor point that I can go back to if I am stuck on a note. I realized that he went over every proven method that I learned throughout my experiences from elementary school to highschool and then added on to them by explaining how these methods help. He even showed me methods usually taught to college musicians.

The reason I always believed in private lessons is because no matter how few or how many you take, the learning process gets expedited immensely.

I definitely would recommend this teacher for learning a brass instrument.

San Francisco, CA

I'm an avid freelancer and teacher in the Bay Area. Having played with major orchestras such as the San Francisco Symphony and a concerto with Berkeley Symphony, my mission is to create a supportive environment where creativity flows, technique is balanced with musicianship, and execution is balanced with ear development that empowers students to reach their musical goals. Most importantly, I aim to make music a source of joy rather than anxiety. My teaching methods revolve around tone production and development of the ears. My teaching methods include etude and method books, solo repertoire, listening and singing, and theory.

About Nikki
A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Nikki Hillis began playing the trombone at age 13, having begun her musical training on the piano several years earlier. Throughout middle and high school, Nikki studied with Kate Jenkins before taking up studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music under Timothy Anderson. While attending the Conservatory, Nikki competed in numerous competitions and received multiple awards, including winning the Undergraduate Concerto Competition. She has also enjoyed a semester abroad in Aarhus, Denmark at the Royal Academy of Music where she studied with Niels-Ole Bo Johansen.

She has participated in a variety of festivals and seminars throughout the summers including the Brevard Summer Music Festival, the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, the Cleveland Trombone Seminar, the Mulcahy Semina
r and most recently, performing with the Spoleto Festival Orchestra. She is a recent graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she studied with Timothy Higgins, principal trombone of the San Francisco Symphony. Nikki has enjoyed the opportunity to play with groups such as the San Francisco Symphony, the Philip Glass Ensemble, and many regional orchestras in the Bay Area. Most recently, she was one of three finalists in the International Trombone Association Frank Smith competition.

Despite her heavy performance career on trombone, she credits her love, passion, and drive for music to her early exposure and lessons on the piano and has continued to explore the instrument as a creative outlet. She enjoys helping people of all ages explore what music can bring to their lives through theory, practice, and performance. Her teaching obligations have included the Conservatory in the Schools program and being a precollege teaching artist on trombone. On piano, she has been a teacher at Village Music and Music City Academy since 2016.

My mission is to create a supportive environment where creativity flows, technique is balanced with musicianship, and execution is balanced with ear development. At the center is the belief that music should be a source of joy rather than anxiety. A teacher once told me that playing music is like being an artist with a palette or a carpenter with a tool belt; you have to pick the right tools to craft your best work. I have learned to apply this to teaching. No two students are the same, so I tailor my approach to each individual student.
