Singing Resources in Ann Arbor

By Elaina R. - Ann Arbor Singing Teacher

Ann Arbor buzzes with musical activity. Between special events like the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, popular venues such as Hill Auditorium, and the musical smorgasbord that is the University of Michigan, this is one heck of a place to learn to sing. I moved here when I was six, so I can give you a serious insider scoop into the vocal scene here in Ann Arbor.

1) University of Michigan Events The University of Michigan is one of the best music schools for voice in the United States. Famous grads abound, including Madonna (her daughter Lourdes is in the Class of 2018), Iggy Pop, and opera singer Jessie Norman.

You don’t have to be a student at the University of Michigan to benefit from the university’s presence. The school stages operas, musicals, and concerts throughout the year at venues all over town. While ticket prices for the operas and musicals start at $10, free concerts are available too, including choir performances and faculty and student recitals. There are usually at least a handful of performances each week; students taking singing lessons in Ann Arbor can easily attend some to learn about new genres and observe expert vocal technique. Check out the calendar of events here: http://www.music.umich.edu/performances_events/event_display.php

2) Ann Arbor Venues For a town of just 117,000, Ann Arbor attracts an impressive array of world-class singers across all genres. Some popular venues include: • Hill Auditorium (classical and jazz) http://www.music.umich.edu/about/facilities/central_campus/hill/ • The Power Center (all genres) http://www.music.umich.edu/about/facilities/central_campus/power/ • Live (contemporary) http://www.livea2.com/ • The Blind Pig (rock, alternative, and heavy metal) http://www.blindpigmusic.com/ 3) University of Michigan Master Classes In addition to performances, the University of Michigan puts on master classes where expert singers coach voice students in front of an audience. Master classes are free and open to the public, and you can learn a lot about singing just from attending. They are listed on the same schedule as other university performances.

4) Ann Arbor Summer Festival The Ann Arbor Summer Festival attracts musicians and vendors alike for a month every summer. Formerly known as Top of the Park due to its prior location on top of a parking structure, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival offers two stages: a free outdoor one and a mainstage concert series at the Power Center. Since its inception in 1983, the Summer Festival has hosted famous singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Cash, Bernadette Peters, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin. I saw Andrew Bird in one of the mainstage performances one year (it was pretty great). See this year’s lineup and order tickets here: http://a2sf.org/desktop/

5) University Musical Society and Choral Union The University Musical Society works in conjunction with the University of Michigan to provide all kinds of performances and events, including the Met’s Live in HD series. But it does more than that; it also offers pre- and post-show information and Q&A sessions with famous singers. If you're looking for some experience after signing up for singing lessons in Ann Arbor, you’re in luck. The UMS Choral Union, led by Grammy Award-winning conductor Jerry Blackstone, is a community volunteer choir that regularly performs with internationally renowned performers at Hill Auditorium. The annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, with top-notch soloists, is a big draw.

6) Local Churches Don’t forget that churches are great resources for singers! Several area churches (including St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where I am a regular soloist), put on large works by master composers several times throughout the year. These events are always free and open to anyone who cares to watch. You can also join one of the many volunteer choirs at area churches.

7) Community Theaters Do you want more singing experience but balk at the idea of joining a choir? No problem! We have several community theaters here that welcome volunteer singers. You can even audition for a lead role if you would like more of a challenge. • Ann Arbor Civic Theater (musical community theater) • Comic Opera Guild (operetta community theater) • Arbor Opera Theater (opera–paid lead roles, volunteer chorus)

With special events, master classes, and performance opportunities galore, Ann Arbor has all the resources you need to learn to sing. If you find a good voice teacher for singing lessons in Ann Arbor, practice regularly, and take advantage of our city's bountiful resources, you’ll learn to sing before you know it.

Great instructor - couldn't 't be happier. Makes learning guitar fun - time flies by when you're with him, but you learn a lot and get some great practice tips. Looking forward to some additional lessons. If he can help a 50 year old who never picked up an instrument before, he can help you.

Berklee College of Music '16 - Voice principle, B.A. Songwriting
I have taken a lot of voice lessons with a lot of different voice teachers. Most teachers are hard and fast in their opinions about styles that are "worthy" or "not worthy" of teaching. I am confident in the fact that learning R&B is no better or worse than learning classical music, musical theater or jazz or rock. They ALL provide benefits to the voice, to the musician. I've sung in a wide variety of ensembles and styles myself, from psychedelic rock to 'Singin' in the Rain' to Jazz to classical arias. My goal is to find music that moves the student emotionally wether it was on the radio or not. From there we can mix in exercises and adaptations the emphasize vocal health, musicianship and fun. After all, if it isn't fun or cathartic, why make music at all? I also play piano and guitar, with a degree in Songwriting from Berklee CoM, so I'm well equipped to assist young singer/songwriters.

Classic singing technique and performance skills are at the heart of what I teach. Lessons start with exercises to help you learn how to take deep natura breaths and use your diaphragm to support your voice so you can sing on pitch. A series of vocal exercises help develop quality of your voice and increase your resonance and range which makes it easier to hit those high notes. You will also learn how to sing with expression and perform as you sing, letting your heart touch the hearts of the audience. As your singing technique develops you will build a repertoire of music that you can perform in any style that you like that like.

About Helen
If you like to sing and want to learn how to be a better singer, you don't have to have any previous experience or training. I specialize in teaching beginning singers of any age how to sing using the classic technique that is the foundation for singing any genre or style of music from Bach to Broadway. You will learn how to make a beautiful sound when you sing and work on presentation, acting, diction, style, and artistry choosing music that you like and building a repertoire of music that you will enjoy singing.

Training for beginning voice students is significantly different than it is for those who have had training. Some have beautiful natural voices but they strain to hit the high notes, Exercises build breath support and slowly increase your range Music is carefully chosen to help you sing with ease build a stronger more reson
ant voice

Some children also have beautiful natural voices, but they are not ready for the kind of voice training that is appropriate for an adult. A child's voice is small in every sense of the word. They cannot produce the volume or range that an adult can without straining their voice. They can learn the fundamentals of music, how to read music, how to count, rhythm and musicality. The music chosen for them needs to be easy to sing and age-appropriate Songs that a child likes that are too high can easily be re-arranged in a different key so they can sing music that they like without straining their voice.

If you are considering voice lessons for you or your child, it is a good way to develop musicianship and build a repertoire of music that you will enjoy singing. The training will be enjoyable and very effective. You will begin to see an improvement in technique after the first lesson.

I was trained in voice performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music and hold a degree from Case Western Reserve University where in art and music theory. I have more than twenty years of professional experience including singing with a Chorale that performed with the Cleveland Symphony and performances as a soloist for choirs in Ohio and Michigan.

I founded and directed the Academie des Beaux-Arts, a performing arts school in Birmingham, and the Actors Alliance Theatre, a professional theater company that gave many young people an opportunity to gain experience working with professional actors. I have a combination of skills in voice and theater performance that sets me apart as a teacher who can help you develop a better singing voice and learn how to perform with artistry.

Helen B taught me for the past year and a half. She was not only a very good teacher but also very patient. She used different methods if I did not understand the first way. I learned various tricks that would make sure I enunciated properly and could sing louder without using too much breath. She always encouraged me if I felt like I did not do as well as I wanted to do, and gave me various exercises to do and videos to see when I get home to practice. By using these techniques, I was always sure that I had learned something every lesson. Overall, I highly recommend anyone who wants to learn how to sing that Helen B is the one who you are looking for.
