Singing Resources in Ann Arbor

By Elaina R. - Ann Arbor Singing Teacher

Ann Arbor buzzes with musical activity. Between special events like the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, popular venues such as Hill Auditorium, and the musical smorgasbord that is the University of Michigan, this is one heck of a place to learn to sing. I moved here when I was six, so I can give you a serious insider scoop into the vocal scene here in Ann Arbor.

1) University of Michigan Events The University of Michigan is one of the best music schools for voice in the United States. Famous grads abound, including Madonna (her daughter Lourdes is in the Class of 2018), Iggy Pop, and opera singer Jessie Norman.

You don’t have to be a student at the University of Michigan to benefit from the university’s presence. The school stages operas, musicals, and concerts throughout the year at venues all over town. While ticket prices for the operas and musicals start at $10, free concerts are available too, including choir performances and faculty and student recitals. There are usually at least a handful of performances each week; students taking singing lessons in Ann Arbor can easily attend some to learn about new genres and observe expert vocal technique. Check out the calendar of events here: http://www.music.umich.edu/performances_events/event_display.php

2) Ann Arbor Venues For a town of just 117,000, Ann Arbor attracts an impressive array of world-class singers across all genres. Some popular venues include: • Hill Auditorium (classical and jazz) http://www.music.umich.edu/about/facilities/central_campus/hill/ • The Power Center (all genres) http://www.music.umich.edu/about/facilities/central_campus/power/ • Live (contemporary) http://www.livea2.com/ • The Blind Pig (rock, alternative, and heavy metal) http://www.blindpigmusic.com/ 3) University of Michigan Master Classes In addition to performances, the University of Michigan puts on master classes where expert singers coach voice students in front of an audience. Master classes are free and open to the public, and you can learn a lot about singing just from attending. They are listed on the same schedule as other university performances.

4) Ann Arbor Summer Festival The Ann Arbor Summer Festival attracts musicians and vendors alike for a month every summer. Formerly known as Top of the Park due to its prior location on top of a parking structure, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival offers two stages: a free outdoor one and a mainstage concert series at the Power Center. Since its inception in 1983, the Summer Festival has hosted famous singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Cash, Bernadette Peters, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin. I saw Andrew Bird in one of the mainstage performances one year (it was pretty great). See this year’s lineup and order tickets here: http://a2sf.org/desktop/

5) University Musical Society and Choral Union The University Musical Society works in conjunction with the University of Michigan to provide all kinds of performances and events, including the Met’s Live in HD series. But it does more than that; it also offers pre- and post-show information and Q&A sessions with famous singers. If you're looking for some experience after signing up for singing lessons in Ann Arbor, you’re in luck. The UMS Choral Union, led by Grammy Award-winning conductor Jerry Blackstone, is a community volunteer choir that regularly performs with internationally renowned performers at Hill Auditorium. The annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, with top-notch soloists, is a big draw.

6) Local Churches Don’t forget that churches are great resources for singers! Several area churches (including St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where I am a regular soloist), put on large works by master composers several times throughout the year. These events are always free and open to anyone who cares to watch. You can also join one of the many volunteer choirs at area churches.

7) Community Theaters Do you want more singing experience but balk at the idea of joining a choir? No problem! We have several community theaters here that welcome volunteer singers. You can even audition for a lead role if you would like more of a challenge. • Ann Arbor Civic Theater (musical community theater) • Comic Opera Guild (operetta community theater) • Arbor Opera Theater (opera–paid lead roles, volunteer chorus)

With special events, master classes, and performance opportunities galore, Ann Arbor has all the resources you need to learn to sing. If you find a good voice teacher for singing lessons in Ann Arbor, practice regularly, and take advantage of our city's bountiful resources, you’ll learn to sing before you know it.

Want lessons that will cater to your needs or the needs of your child and not a book?

My Reading and Phonics lessons are made to dazzle and awe your child into an understanding of letters, sounds, and the written page with several learning enrichment programs including but not limited to "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", "The McGuffey Reader Program", " The
Bible Phonics Program", "The Abeka Curriculum", "The Bible ABC's for Kids", "The Endless Alphabet, Reader and Words Programs", as well as numerous supplemental material. I also love to work with teachers when possible and use placement tests to determine where to start and periodically to know how to continue. (The kids just think they are games).

All of my lessons are designed to foster a love for reading or music and focus on your reading and Phonics goals or your dream in the music world as well as build knowledge and expertise for both!

Beginner? We can get you started on the right foot! I have experience with adult beginners, seniors and children of all ages. I have special curriculum and activities that enhance interest, reduce stress and help you to maintain what you learn.

Pre-schoolers have a curriculum all their own that teaches phonics, reading or music through lovable animal characters with games on tablet, computer and other resources that teach, reinforce and excite their hearts to learn and retain what they learn.

Does your child have some knowledge but just has not excelled in phonics or reading? We can tailor lessons for just that.

Maybe you have some music knowledge but just can't play or sing that special song? We can tailor lessons for that, too!

Maybe your child knows letters and sounds but just hasn't made the leap to reading? We can tailor the lessons to get your child from point B to Z!

Can you read music but not play on your own? Can you play by ear and not read music? I have experience bridging the gaps.

Is your dream to become a Soloist, harmonizer or karaoke star? Accompany yourself or others or just play for fun? Then why not you and I embark on that exciting journey together!

Is your dream just for your child to be able to read at grade level or above? I will give it my all for them to do so.

Is your dream to become a church musician or play for a choir? or Are you already a church musician but need help with a particular song, program or musical?

Worship to Him and service to others is the reason that I do what I do!

Try us! You'll be glad you did!!!!

I am a very laid back instructor, though the classes are very well structured.

Usually, we progress with a chosen curriculum according to the student's or parent's vision and initial overview during the 1st few classes. However, all curriculums are supplemented to enhance student performance and comprehension. Our supplemental material is used to go swifter for material that you grasp well and understand, and slower with more repetition for that that you need more practice, without being monotonous. It is also used to provide appropriate but exciting reinforcement of all material to ensure that material is retained.

We are forever updating material and also incorporate games and enhanced activities to keep lessons interesting and refreshing as well!

I also have experience in teaching autistic, ADD, ADHD and those with varying degrees of brain damage.

Along with Broadway and Classical, I enjoy teaching popular music mixed in. Bring songs that you enjoy and we will add it to our lesson plan.

About Lisa
I studied Classical Piano under Ruth Jones for 13 years and under Audrejean Heydenburg at Spring Arbor University for 2 years. I studied Voice under Tamara Whitley for 6 years and under Charles Livesay at Spring Arbor University for 2 years.I have been teaching Piano lessons for 10+ years and Voice lessons for nearly as long. I studied piano pedagogy and vocal music education at Spring Arbor University for 2 years. I then taught music at West Highland Christian Academy for K-12 students and Home School Band and Choir for upper elementary students. Along with teaching, I lead worship at Bend City Church and has accompanied for several community plays and student scholarship events.

"I enjoy all kinds of music and really want to share my love of music with people of all ages. My goal is to get people excited to learn and expand their a
bilities through voice and piano and to prepare future performers and teachers as well."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach all styles of voice including Classical, Italian, Jazz and Folk styles as well as Contemporary, Pop and Broadway. I incorporate the fundamentals into my everyday teaching style and help the student to grow in their technical ability through application in each song they study. I teach the student how to use their voice correctly as well as how to have good stage presence and performance ready ability.

I teach beginner piano students from age 5 through method books as well as more advanced students in either Classical styles or Contemporary styles. Some students have the desire to be concert pianists or to teach piano themselves, others just wish to play with a band or play songs which they can sing to. Both styles are valuable skills to learn. I will discuss with the student which direction they would like to go and decide together what the student would like to learn.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home studio has a parking space for one student to come and one to go. Parents are welcome to wait and listen to the lesson or drop the student off.

*** Specialties ***
Classically trained Piano, Specialize currently in improvising with chord charts or lead sheets. Worship Music.

Voice lessons rely heavily on Broadway, and Show Tunes, but also include Classical, Italian, Latin, Folk Tunes, Classic Rock, Groups, Performance.

About Jakarra
Jakarra Howard is a Voice Care Specialist, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance from Kalamazoo College. In addition to her degree, she has gained knowledge of how the voice works through completed course work in Speech Language Pathology including courses in voice disorders and interventions. As a member of the Voice Foundation, Jakarra is currently working toward a Masters in Speech Language Pathology, along with certifications from various vocal health institutions.

Her music career spans more than 15 years and includes various musical performances, along with the opportunity to teach voice and piano to many. She’s had the pleasure of opening for many popular artists, performing a rendition of “The National Anthem” at a Detroit Lions game, and singing for former Michigan House Representative Carolyn Kilpatrick. She has a
lso provided background vocals for many artists, while working on personal music projects. Internationally, Jakarra has performed as the lead vocalist during a tour to Japan with the Kalamazoo Jazz Ensemble.

While performing and teaching, Jakarra began to notice that many singers, including her, were not reaching their full, singing potential. Why? Because the whole body was not totally prepared for the various projects that a singer often encountered. Through this experience, she realized a fascination with the “singing voice” and began to understand that singers are athletes. Therefore, just as athletes train, a singer must also constantly train to keep the voice and body in shape.

Along with her fascination, Jakarra has a passion to help singers perform at their most optimal level. She created Voice Couture Consulting (VCC) to provide a service where singers can learn about their whole body as it relates to their voice and prepare their voice and body for each project. Since everyone is different, VCC custom designs a combination of approaches to specifically fit each singer. This includes a tailored program that provides nutrition and exercise routines. Jakarra believes this program will help singers to know their voices inside and out. From the background singer to the lead vocalist, Jakarra is excited about helping singers reach their full potential!

Each person has their own unique voice. It's beautiful in a way that no one can mimic. Whether singing classical music or pop I strive help my students find their own voice. With 5 years of private voice lesson experience I have had experience exploring many genres. I encourage students to being in their own music as well as being willing to explore a piece that I choose.
I fully believe that anyone can be taught to sing with the right amount of dedication. I'll give you my full attention if you will give me yours.

About MiKayla
Like many musicians I have been performing since I was a child. Through the years I have gained experience in a variety of styles of music. From classical to jazz, from country to pop, each style of music has a different twang, but each needs to be approached by a solid technique.
My voice students can expect to gain a solid foundation of proper technique. With that understanding they will be able to approach any style of music and successfully sing it in a healthy way.
Additionally they will acquire basic knowledge of musical terminology, sight reading and music history. As students continue to come to lessons, various information on musical knowledge comes up viscerally. This allows the students to not only gain the ability to sing properly, but understand the music and genre itself.
As a performer myself, I have a background in singin
g solos and in ensembles. I have been a member of music societies, honor choirs, and honor societies. I have had the ability to perform in many areas including traveling all over Florida, and Washington DC as well.
