I had a great lesson with Paul! I felt like he took the time to listen to my music goals and provided me with the tools and techniques to get there. Looking forward to future lessons!

I cannot say enough good things about paul. First, despite having so many years of playing, he doesn't judge or look down on you for not having the same level of knowledge he has. Instead - he is able to communicate concepts, both basic and advanced, to you in a way that you can understand. Second, he caters to you in order to achieve the goals you want to achieve, not the ones he thinks you should have. Lastly, he's clearly passionate about playing, and music in general. he's a great guy to chat about, seems really down to earth, and goes above and beyond in order to make the most of the lesson.

I cannot say enough good things about paul. Highly recommend you take his lessons!

My teaching philosophy is all about self-education: not only will I teach you how to play the guitar but I will also help you learn how to teach yourself. The work required to learn an instrument doesn't come from 30 to 60 minutes of lessons from a professional, it comes from the intensity of focus you spend playing the guitar throughout your time outside of lessons.

We will start with the end in mind; what is your goal? What music or songs do you want to learn? Then, together we will build a lesson plan to accomplish that goal. Throughout the lesson plan, along with playing your favorite songs, we will cover several aspects of being a musician: proper technique; musical interpretation and expression; music theory, which will include understanding notes, scales, chords, harmonic progressions, and analyzing music; communication when performing with other musicians; and building habits and techniques toward effective practicing.

The great thing about this process is it establishes ...

I have been learning tenor banjo (Irish tuning) from Matt. Although I'm a complete beginner, Matt has been a very patient teacher. He balances lessons between learning songs and music theory. His wit and humor make every lesson enjoyable.

I have been playing guitar for over a decade and have tons of performance experience gigging in a local rock band. Combine that with a curriculum that starts with fundamentals and expands quickly into playing your favorite songs and you have a great start to beginning or expanding your guitar playing abilities.

About ryan

Hi, my name is Ryan and I would love to teach you how to play guitar. I've been playing for over 10 years and have been gigging for a little less than that in my band. Over the years I have gained a lot of experience performing on stage and teaching to people of all ages. If you want to shred, jam,

Ryan was great! He's obviously a talented guitarist and he is very laid back and makes you feel comfortable. He shows you in detail what you need to do to become a better guitar player. My ONLY advice, and the reason he doesn't get 5 stars, is I think he should have more visual aids with his lessons. For example, write down the different scales or transcribe the first several measures of a song. Then, one has something to refer back to when you are practicing and invariably get stuck. Other than that, I would highly recommend Ryan as a guitar teacher!

"Mr. Jesse is a very effective teacher and my 16 year old daughter has progressed very quickly in playing classical guitar and violin in just under two years. The lessons are very productive while still being very enjoyable. I'd recommend him for both for students who are learning a new instrument or already have a musical background."

"Nothing but good things to say about Brendon. Aside from his insane talent as a composer and musician, he was phenom with our son Max. A few thoughts below...

We knew Brendon was the right person to help our son Max on day one with TakeLessons, when we wrote to 4 or 5 potential instructors. The other folks wrote back and just said 'sure, I'm here, happy to help'. But Brendon wrote back with thoughts about the pieces Max needed to learn for his audition, a rough outline of a plan, and shared enough about himself that we knew he had truly 'heard' what we needed were looking for. That kind of thoughtfulness is unique.

Brendon is great with kids, and created instant rapport with Max over the video lessons. Brendon will always spend a little extra time than budgeted, which is appreciated. And his scheduling was flexible which always helps with us busy families. We did a few in person lessons and Max came away inspired - for classical guitar but also for music in general. Max's skills grew throughout, and he never resisted practicing; he looked forward to the lessons and the chance to talk about some guitar-related thing with Brendon.

Brendon isn't a big disciplinarian so after a few weeks I had a little chat with Max about what it means to respect your teacher, even if they seem young and cool and are on video. That's something I think parents need to monitor a little.

Recommended w/o any hesitation. If you have Brendon in mind you're headed in the right direction for sure. -MR"

"I have been a student of Bill's for almost three years. Bill's teaching is characterized by clarity of expression, high standards, patience and an upbeat and pleasant disposition. He is always clear and direct when explaining the technical aspects of playing- no matter how complex the matter at hand. He holds you (and himself) to a high standard- no shortcuts- you learn to do it right. Yet he is so pleasant to be with that every minute of every lesson is truly enjoyable. "Mark played for my wedding, and I was incredibly impressed. I had certain musical portions of my wedding pre-arranged, but those plans ended up falling apart. Mark was able to pick up and play beautiful music right when I needed him to. His flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile helped make my wedding as successful as it was! He really saved the day, and I'm so thankful he was there! If I couldn't have him at other future events, I would be happy to take any of his students because I know they would have learned from one of the best."

Should Classical Violinists Learn to Improvise?

A few weeks ago the Washington Post published an article about musician Hannah Hanh and her struggles with improvisation.  As a classical violinist, she hadn't had much training for spontaneity, naturally. The article points out improvisation as a technique that has fallen by the wayside for many performers these days. And it asks an interesting question: Can (and should) classical musicians learn to improvise? We've talked a lot about improvising on the guitar and drums, but where do classi …

Whether you're brand new to guitar, or just new to classical guitar, you might be wondering, "what's the deal with tabs and sheet music?"
