*** Lesson Details ***
Piano students will focus specifically on the most important skills and concepts they need to be able to play proficiently and musically. This will be through the use of proper technique and providing clear explanation of music theory. Scales, progression, harmonizing, improvising and sight reading will all be demonstrated and explained thoroughly. Also creative exercises to help the students build chops and play parts that they can call their own will be encouraged.

Drum lessons will improve the students technique and creativity while introducing many diverse styles. I will introduce (or reinforce) the rudiments and how they might be applied to any beats or fills. Linear patterns and four way coordination patterns will be applied for developing good coordination skills and ambidextrous discipline. Styles will be covered to grasp a feel of straight 8th and 16th note patterns. Blues shuffle and swing rhythms will be covered so that the student can get a feel of grooves that are based on triplets. Students can also learn about music and rhythms from all over the world. (Latin, Jamaican, Afro Cuban etc...) After the basis of various rhythmic concepts are applied then we can reach into the field of playing over the bar line, playing in odd meters, and soloing.

Andrew A.

Tempe, AZ

About Andrew

My name is Andrew, and I've been a musician nearly my entire life. I have a Bachelor's degree in classical guitar performance from Arizona State University, but my background goes far beyond classical music. My performance experiences range from playing violin in my high school symphony orchestra to playing lead guitar in a Santana cover band, and just about everything in between! As a teacher, you can expect me to be positive and encouraging. My biggest goal is to inspire you and help you discover a similar passion for music as I've developed over the years.

*** Lesson Details ***
While
I do expect students to practice consistently, I always do my best to tailor the lesson plans to their wants as well as their needs so practice is both fun and challenging. For students pursuing classical music, I'll typically start them in a book and reading sheet music, but for just about anything else, the lesson plans will be more customized to the taste of my students and will not require music reading ability in most cases. After the first few months, my students can expect to have a solid understanding of music, their instrument, and what steps to take to reach their long term goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio includes a full drum set, electric piano, as well as several guitars and a bass guitar. I would prefer that the student brings his or her own guitar or bass. I always have spare books and music in case the student forgets to bring their own.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I travel with my own guitar and bass guitar, but for piano and drum lessons, the student will need their own instrument and a quiet area to get the most from the lessons.

*** Specialties ***
While I have a degree in classical guitar, I have several years of experience with blues and classic rock, specifically on the electric guitar and drums. Aside from those, I enjoy all genres of music and have plenty of musical experience outside of the aforementioned genres.

Kathryn taught my children in home as well as a chosen location. Kathryn was always prepared and interacted well with my children. She would challenge my children with their music. On the other hand, it is possible to identify a few examples across a few genres where a majority will agree that, yes, those are hard songs to sing. Here are five
