Introduction to cello and bow technique

About Rene
Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has all instruments at both his home and college studio

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson material, song charts and a progression scale. I require student to have an Instrument and recommended technique literature.

*** Specialties ***
My classical training began in High School with Influences in Segovia, and Romero I studied classical for 4 yrs. and trained in Jazz and Improvisation with performances In Big Band and group ensemble. Also sang and played in the school gospel choir.

****Personal Statement*****

If you needed a reason

There is no question that music touches us instantly and activates images, emotions and memories that linger with us throughout our lives. As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I have been teaching cello since 1989.
Cello students of all ages and levels are accepted at my studio. All levels of the cello repertoire from the beginning through the Major Concertos will be taught. Students will be placed in courses according to the level of their current repertoire. The sequence of repertoire in the Suzuki Cello School will be used to place students.

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Music is an important part of our lives, and thus I am not a one-style type teacher. I work with everyone at their current level and develop lessons for them based upon their desires. I believe that teaching the classics is just as important to teaching current music and inspiring each of my students to reach beyond their current comfort zone. I stress developing good practice habits and fundamentals, as these make any style of playing more enjoyable.

I strive to treat each student equally no matter how advance the student are. My job as a teacher is to provide students a tool in life. Students will learn the way life works through the art of music. Should the students decide to pursue music or not in the future, I only hope that students will apply what they've learned in music to their everyday problem solving.

As a seasoned teacher and performer on modern and baroque cello, I'm here to help you take the next step in your studies. Whether you're a beginner (child or adult), advanced player, returning to the cello after a hiatus, or anywhere in between, I will work with you to tailor our lessons to fit your needs and help you play with as much ease and fluidity as possible.

I'm a member of the Hausmann Quartet, The Knights chamber orchestra, San Diego Baroque Soloists, and appear frequently with Bach Collegium San Diego and on the Art of Elan and San Diego New Music concert series, among others. I teach cello and chamber music at San Diego State University as well as privately.

About Alex
I enjoy a diverse and adventurous musical life, here in San Diego and around the world. As a member of the Hausmann Quartet I'm an Artist-in-Residence at San Diego State University, where I teach cello and chamber music. As a long-time member of The Knights chamber orchestra (based in Brooklyn) I've performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, from New York to Vienna, Ireland, Germany and the Canary Islands, and appeared at the festivals of Caramoor, Dresden, Ojai, Ravinia, Tanglewood, and last season in Aix-en-Provence and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. I've recorded for Ancalagon, Bridge, Canary Classics, Cantaloupe, In a Circle, Koch, Naxos, Warner Classics and Sony records.

I'm a committed educator who's been teaching cello for twenty years, and enjoy working with students of all levels and ages to help them fulfill their musical goa
ls and dreams. I regularly coach individuals and groups of pre-college students at the Hausmann Chamber Music Program (at SDSU's Community Music School) and adults as part of the Hausmann Quartet's Living Room Program of community chamber music.

My varied interests have led to collaborations with dance companies, recordings for film, television and commercials, early music work and performances throughout Mexico. Locally, I'm a founding member of the San Diego Baroque Soloists, a mainstay on the Art of Élan series, an affiliated artist with San Diego New Music and appear regularly with Bach Collegium San Diego. I have degrees from the Eastman School of Music (BM) and CUNY Queens College (MA). My teachers have included Steven Doane, Marcy Rosen, Ross Harbaugh, Joseph Elworthy and Andre Emelianoff. Thoughtful, insightful and nurturing cello instruction. Discover and share the power of music with personalized lessons.

I’ve worked with cellists of all ages in order to help them discover the joys and challenges involved in playing a string instrument. My approach focuses on developing patience and cultivating a growth mindset.

With my teaching methods, students are able to develop effective practice habits that make playing music easier. My greatest joy is watching students passion grow as they learn to make beautiful music.

I take pride in teaching cellists who are eager to broaden their understanding of music and artistry, who strive to develop their talents and work on their shortcomings, and who love sharing music.

About Christina
I recently moved from the Washington D.C area where I taught 20-30 students a week. My versatility, experience, and formal training help me to make learning easy and fun.

In addition to lessons, I ask my students to perform together in ensembles for the community (in schools, senior care facilities, hospitals, and charity fundraisers). For these performances, students play music they have chosen and had a hand in arranging. There are opportunities to play solos and lots of contemporary and classical repertoire as well. In addition to these smaller performances, there are also more formal recitals at the end of the year.

As a performer, my playing has been praised for its “incredible depth” [Broadway World Review] on stage and “haunting” [Boston Arts Review] sound. I have led a diverse career performing in theaters, collaborating
with cross-genre ensembles, working with contemporary classical composers, and passionately educating young musicians.

I love watching my students discover how much music can transform the lives of others. I love watching them grow and seeing them create more and more beautiful music.

Come join us on our crusade to make music an important part of everyone's life.

Cello lessons with me are fun and engaging, with plenty of improvising, multi-style techniques and genres, and more, included with the standard classical cello technique and repertoire. I make sure to give my students a well-rounded education that will give them a real opportunity to become working professional cellists in our new global community.

About Mandy
I started taking cello lessons at the age of 9, where I quickly found that it was my passion. I rose to the top from a young age, and was winning competitions and performing in professional concert series and in tours all over the USA and Europe by the time I was in high school.

I also collaborated and performed with members of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble in their Global Musician Workshop in its inaugural and second years. At the workshop, I learned songs by ear and improvised in styles of music from all around the world. I worked with cellist Mike Block, folk singer Sarah Jarosz, fiddler Hanneke Cassel, and more. I believe that it is important to give the young students of today the tools needed to operate in our global community, and my experience with the Silk Road Ensmeble helps me pass on these tools to my students.

I received
my B.A. in Music with a focus on Cello Performance at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, where I studied with famed cello soloist Andres Diaz. During my time in Dallas, I professionally taught as well as performed all over the city, in orchestras, ensembles, and solo recitals. I recently received my M.M. in Music Education from Southern Methodist University, where I was a well-respected and revered educator amongst my peers and coworkers.

After graduating, I moved to Asheville, NC to take on the position of Program Director at the Asheville Music School. I am excited to build a studio here in Asheville and share music with all of my students!

My musical background is extremely diverse, so virtually anything you want to get out of our lessons, I'll be able to give you. I have studied both the classical and jazz methods extensively with many influential teachers that are still active in the music scene. This experience has taught me how to apply each method, depending on the situation, to produce the best results possible. I have comprehensive knowledge of the standard classical and jazz repertoire, and can easily develop an effective plan of study for any student, at any level. I also write a fair amount of music, so depending on the student, that could become a large focus of our lessons. Most importantly though, I know how to keep a lesson interesting and how to engage a student of any age and skill level in a way that will motivate them to work on their craft consistently and effectively. Really excited to work with anyone interested in getting something out of music!

About Philip
I am a cellist, bassist, and composer living in Miami right now studying at the Frost School of Music. I have been heavily involved in both the jazz and classical traditions for the past six years, and I have gleaned a lot of wisdom that I hope to impart on the next generation. I try to be the most compassionate teacher possible, and I pride myself as someone who deeply understands the learning process.
I have spent the last fifteen years building both my classical and jazz repertoire, so I have a great idea of how to build a plan of study for any student of any level. Despite my experience in these two well-established music traditions, I am a massive proponent of listening to and experiencing as many types of music as possible. Once we work through technique, we could get into more contemporary music, or virtually anything that has art
istic merit. Learning a musical instrument is incredibly beneficial to the development of the psyche and brain, so I will do everything in my power to keep my students engaged and enjoying the process. I really look forward to working with any and all of you!
